First drawing assignment.... my little owl

Just thought i'd share some more artwork with everyone :) This was my first assignment for the semester, we had to pick an animal that represents us as a person.... i chose an owl cause they're loners & nocturnal, they also symbolize magic & darkness.... their flight is silent.

Very good!!! Excellent!! Was this etched from black ink??

golden braid 09-13-2005 11:22 PM

Yes, ink is probably my favorite medium.... Luv it!

strandinthewind 09-13-2005 11:27 PM

So just explaining how you did this. Your "canvas" is covered with a thick coating of black ink and then you use a tool to "clean away" and expose the white beneath. Have I got that right? It's been ages since I have worked in this medium.

No, actually thats relief printing, or scratchboard (which is a specially coated paper that you scratch into) I did this drawing with just black ink & ink pens on watercolor block (which is watercolor paper but thicker, & stays flat on the pad until you remove it w/ a palette knife) Thanks for asking! :)

amber 09-13-2005 11:37 PM

I really, really like it. That is outstanding. I'd have that on my wall, but I have some owl stuff up in my house (that my mom did) anyway. And the symbolism and feeling of owls is very powerful, IMO. I don't want to steal your thunder, but just want to show you one of my faves. (owl on bottom).
Again, very good, me loves it. :woohoo:

P.S. - just noticed the tiny cityscape in the background. Very pleasing. Very nice.

That's amazing, Carei......you're very good. I'm so jealous of those with artistic ability; I can't even draw a stick figure.

Thank you :) Well, i hope so.... my teacher's kind of old fashioned though... he doesn't really get the way young artists think.... He's nice & everything, but i think that some of my work will scare him cause my pieces & concepts are very dark.... i did a series of paintings last year of mutilated teddy bears   ....but i did get an A!

Oh, no problem, I really like what you did. I would want it up in my house. (I love simple pen and ink, and black and white, etc.).

Yes, she did, it's etched glass. Please, please, never do anything like it. My mom is already pissed that her cousin (who made 10's of thousands of dollars from her paintings) copied my mom's art.

As an interesting aside, and I don't know if you are this way, but my mom won't look at other people's art at all, b/c she doesn't want to be influenced. She absolutely won't. (not on purpose, anyway.)

I was just thinking you must get an A.

uh...those who can't do, teach. ;)

catinthedark 09-14-2005 12:05 AM

Wow - as someone who failed miserably at art, I bow down. That's stunning.

amber 09-14-2005 12:11 AM

You know, I just looked at it again. It's deceptively complex. It looks fairly simple, picture wise, you know, round moon, branch, owl, city....but...when you look at the cityscape, and the expression in the owl's eyes...suddenly it seems so much more. Not to mention the owl's feathering. It's very detailed. I've seen how things like this go, it's difficult (could be, maybe not to some) and time consuming (in my estimation of ways of spending time).

That's a shame about your mom's art :distress: ..... my mom was actually going to be an artist, but now she's just a makeup artist

I do love to look at other artist's work... luv to go to museums & read art books. It's important for some people i guess, i think it depends on the kind of artist you are.... i'm an Illustration major. I've been influenced by several artists/illustators... Van Gogh, Picasso, Edvard Munch (pronounced "Munk"), Morris Sindack, Edward Gorey, & my childhood idol, Tim Burton :) I've already developed my own style though, that i've been working at since age two.

You know, I think you have your own style as well. I've seen a lot of art that's derivative, or just lame ( ) - but I think you really have something there. I also like how you work in different mediums. I guess I'm biased, b/c my mom makes art out of everything, but I think it's really a sign of exemplary creativity, and when it comes out looking good, that's even better.
Have you ever done any wood carving or sculpture? Or any etched glass? (not that you should, I was just curious).

ontheEdgeof17 09-14-2005 12:18 AM

Hoot! Hoot!

I think it's a beautiful piece of work.

Yeah...they look kind of sad...but not how a human would be sad. I dunno, they're very "owly" to me....with a little extra depth. It's hard (for me) to describe, I just think they're very "real owl" with all the depth that could entail, if you really see the owl. But you chose an owl on purpose, for all the emotions "owl" can encompass. (Did that sound totally lame? It's hard for me to describe, sorry.)

Yeah, four days. looking at the detail, I expected as much. Seriously, the cityscape is fabulous. :woohoo:

Yes i have done lino block carving.... but i'm taking printmaking next semester... your mom is very creative with what she does, just because its not painting, doesn't mean it isn't art :)

lino block carving...is that carving for printmaking?

no, i mean for people who wouldn't understand your mom's work cause its not the cliche idea of what art is (does that make sense? )

Yeah, lino block is a piece of linolium on wood, its easier to carve out... then you ink it up & make prints...

No, you made sense.... no they're not human-like, but the emotion is human & the fact that these particular owls (Barred Owls) have a very lonesome expression to me, Great Horned Owls are a bit on the scary side (i'm not an owl expert or anything, i had to look up stuff  )

estranged4life 09-14-2005 12:46 AM

My whole family is artistic...

) I've already developed my own style though, that i've been working at since age two.

My late Mother designed her own quilts (Her infamous 50 state birds of the US is laying beside me at this moment...And her very infamous 'black" Raggedy Anne & Andy's were popular with her friends of color, I have one of the last 2 pairs she ever made and I now own all of her sewing equipment) and made her own Christmas tree decorations from plaster (Which reminds me I still need to go to her home and find her trunks which were filled with those decorations...Those belong to us, her children. I will probably need three 8' trees just for her handmade decorations.)

My older brother Bill is very artistic...Has a great knack for fantasy art, He would be great and well known if he would pull his head out of the drug/alcohol haze and apply himself.

My older brother Geary is also artistic, He used to be a very good artist, But is a much better draftsman...One of the best I know (He is no longer a draftsman).

I used to study in hopes to someday be a professional artist (My Uncle was a professional who painted absolutely mindblowing psychedelic pieces that would have been art gallery quality if it wasnt for the fact he was a prisoner in a Federal prison), But too much BS in my life sidetracked that dream...So please, Never get discouraged and give up on your art, I am slowly trying to get back into my artwork (Which I havent done in over 15 years) and it is hard trying to find that love that I lost (Not to mention my illness has definitely affected my ability.)

Oh! yes, very insightful. Plus where my mom lives, most people would want to buy...uh...cute pictures of ducks, or dogs playing poker, or something lame.

Ah, good job. Yes, a different kind of owl would have made a different impression (especially a great horned).
BTW - that one stevie ink piece you did is still number one. If it rates "tattoo consideration" it must be good. I can't believe how you got the expression just right. I really thought you copied it, or something, it was that good.

Wow.... you've got a whole family of artists! It's wonderful that your mom did all those things... precious creations that you'll keep close to you always  Please, please don't give up your art..... i did from ages 11-15 cause my family was very cruel to me about it.... told me it would amount to nothing :distress: I mean this was something i had been doing since i was two. When i was 16 & had enough money to buy cds, Stevie's music really got me through all that crap & inspired me to draw again. You WILL find your love for it again.... i promise :) If you ever need advise, or want to show me some of your work, i'd be more than happy to help.
