Aww, I got all excited. I didn't know who Joss Stone was and I thought it was a guy. I think it would be so hot hearing two guys sing that song. :)

Cool, thanks for posting!

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that they're covering Tom Petty?

If the classic song "Heartbreak Hotel" were covered by someone today, it might be referred to as an Elvis Presley cover, even though Elvis didn't write the song. So it depends on what you mean by a cover. |
Perhaps it should be referred to as a cover of Tom AND Stevie, since HE wrote it, and they BOTH sang it?

Bowie, Keys Dress Up Musicians take Radio City for Fashion Rocks benefit For proof that music and fashion are inextricably linked, look no further than David Bowie, just one of the artists featured on Fashion Rocks, the extravaganza that helped to kick off New York's fall Fashion Week, set for broadcast Friday night on CBS. Taped live on Thursday at Radio City Music Hall, the concert found the always-trendy rocker sharing a bill with other stylish artists, such as Gwen Stefani, Duran Duran, Alicia Keys, Destiny's Child, Tim McGraw, Shakira, Nelly, Billy Idol and the Arcade Fire. "Right now, I'm here as a fan," Alicia Keys told the crowd while introducing Bowie, whose career has been defined as much by his evolving appearance as his sound. "He's an artist who towers above the rest . . . constantly changing his looks," she said, before a dapper Bowie, clad in a blue suit, performed an eerie rendition of his classic "Life on Mars," backed only by an accompanist on a grand piano. Bowie's performance was serious with good reason. In addition to spotlighting celebrity fashion, the event joins other televised efforts in fundraising for Hurricane Katrina relief: All proceeds from the evening were donated to the cause, and presenters and performers frequently appealed to the audience for support. The evening began by immediately acknowledging the Gulf Coast disaster in a show-opening performance by a black-clad Tim McGraw. The country star sang "My Old Friend" as images of New Orleans darted by on screens flanking the stage. "We'll meet again, my old friend," McGraw crooned, and the song transformed into a tribute, capturing the spirit of a battered city, while maintaining a glimmer of optimism. Similarly, in her performance later that night, Keys moved with her new single "Unbreakable," which was ornamented with saxophone and Keys' own jazzy organ-playing. There was still room for a celebratory spirit, however, as an early performance by Destiny's Child proved. In perhaps their last televised appearance as a group, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams made a glamorous entrance, parading through the facade of a store that read "House of Dereon," Beyonce's new clothing line. The trio then vamped through a pumped-up medley of hits, including "Independent Women," "Say My Name," "Survivor" and "Lose My Breath." Gwen Stefani -- whose own line, LAMB, has shown staying power -- delivered her single "Cool" on a spare stage early in the evening. The stylish blonde was decked out in a sequined, cream-colored dress. Rapper Nelly, another fashion entrepreneur, performed with Pharrell Williams on "Play It Off," with its nightclub theme and fleet of backup dancers. More collaborations studded the evening, as Rob Thomas and Joss Stone reprised the roles of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks for a duet on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," with Stone preening and growling as she sidled up to Thomas. And later on, in a show highlight, Bowie returned to the stage with the Arcade Fire. The Montreal indie rockers offered a folky reading of Bowie's "Five Years" with Bowie on lead vocals, followed by a simmering rendition of their own "Wake Up" with Bowie and Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler harmonizing. The song ended in a twinkling coda, complete with accordion, that roused the crowd to its feet. Fashion grabbed the spotlight again when New Wave clotheshorses Duran Duran took the stage: During a revved-up version of their classic "Girls on Film," Simon LeBon and company were joined by models offering glimpses of designers' new fall collections. It was a moment as rock & roll as any fashion show could be. BRIAN ORLOFF (Posted Sep 09, 2005) |

Friday » September 9 » 2005 Gwen, Beyoncé shine as Fashion Rocks Samantha Critchell Associated Press Friday, September 09, 2005 NEW YORK -- When fashion rocks, singers-turned-designers Gwen Stefani and Beyoncé pull out all the stops. Stefani put on a slinky silver dress worthy of a screen siren at Thursday night's Fashion Rocks concert that kicked off New York Fashion Week, and Beyoncé -- along with her fellow members of Destiny's Child -- wore shimmery babydoll dresses. The concert, to be shown Friday night on the U.S. network CBS, brought together some of music's biggest and most fashionable stars to celebrate the link between style and song. Richard Beckman, the show's producer and president of The Conde Nast Media Group, which publishes Vogue and GQ, said "music defines the epochs of fashion over the years." "Music stars have always been fashion icons. Think of The Beatles coming off the plane, the mods of 'the new romantics,' Madonna, David Bowie." Thursday night, Bowie looked like a billboard for sleek chicness -- until you looked down: His seemingly perfect suit had pants that only reached his ankles. His stunning wife Iman made up for that faux-pas in a clingy, skin-coloured gown decorated with crystals. "Music influences fashion and vice versa," said Tina Chai, the show's stylist. "You have to strike the right balance of both sex and sophistication." Bowie wasn't the only '80s rocker there Thursday. "Style has always been very important to us," said Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes backstage before the show. "We grew up in the '70s. Music was glam rock, punk rock and a very stylish movement." Recalling Duran Duran's first photo shoot, Rhodes said he and his bandmates went to a college campus in London and asked the edgiest students they could find to come up with the band's wardrobe. "We liked what they came up with at the time, but, yes, they'd be a little dated now." The band, known for songs like Rio and Hungry Like a Wolf, wore suits when performing Girls on Film with a gaggle of women dressed in clothes designed by Stefani, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Sean (Diddy) Combs and Jay-Z behind them. The big finale was Billy Idol's White Wedding, and for that number models were dressed in bridal gowns by Roberto Cavalli, John Galliano, Chanel and Vera Wang, among others. Hanging out in the green room with model wife Marisol, Rob Thomas said he gives some thought to his wardrobe, especially what he wears on stage, but not too much. "I like something with a classic touch. That way, it's easy." So what did Thomas wear for his duet of Stop Dragging My Heart Around with Joss Stone channelling Stevie Nicks? Jeans and a T-shirt. |
I'll definitely be recording this if I go out tonight, mainly to catch SDMHA. I'll be anxious to see if she does our girl justice...
IMO most people don't consider SDMHA to be a Tom Petty song. It was on HER album and the average person would not know he wrote it. |

When Bonnie Tyler recorded her album of cover songs a few years ago, every press release and article (from European newspapers -- it wasn't released here in the states), mentioned that Bonnie was covering "Fleetwood Mac's 'Need Your Love So Bad.'" While I was happy to see FM mentioned, "Need Your Love So Bad" is technically a Little Willie John song. But songs usually become synonymous with the artist who made them famous, and people recognize them as such. |

Has this duet already been performed? I saw Rob doing a solo number. I hope I didn't miss it!

I've just turned it on, too. Caught the end of solo Joss, and the announcer just said, "coming up - Joss Stone, Rob Thomas, etc etc." Here's hoping I didn't miss it either...

Weird
I just now clicked on this thread and BAM, there they are singing it. LOL
BTW, what the frick happened to David Bowie? Did Iman do that to him? Sesly, what happened? I hope he's okay. Kyan, QUIT SHAVING!! LOL I love the stubble. Joss...did you lay out today, cuz you are red. |
Rob's gotta be the Stevie fan. He seems like a fan of hers. I can't see Joss liking Stevie. But ya never know. Anyways, sounds good!!
|
ok, I officially love Rob Thomas and not too sure about Joss Stone. She barely even sang the freakin' words. Rob looked like he wanted to rock out but Joss just got on my nerves. It was cool though to hear the applause for the song.
|
I?
Have just discovered that I hate Joss Stone. That was putrid. Someone has to A) teach that girl how to move on stage, and B) DRESS. Fer God's sake - it was called FASHION Rocks. |

Rob Thomas is HOTTTTT! |
Did nothing for me, Rob looked like he was having more fun...nothing tops the Petty/Nicks duets. What up with her not wearing shoes?

Does she not realize what the song is about? It's a kiss-off song, not a slink-around-trying-to-be-sexy-at-all-costs song. |
Who cares. If it gets more people liking Stevie tunes, all the same! :woohoo:

At first I thought the same thing, but I think Bowie was trying to do a social statement with his makeup/clothes. High water pants... I could be wrong tho - Iman IS pretty scary. |
The band sounded great, Rob sounded great (loved him on some of the lines Stevie originally sang), but Joss... well, what can I say?
If she'd quit all that note-scaling caterwauling and the over-emoting, she'd probably be a good singer. |
