Great choices!

LongBlackScarf 08-30-2005 09:38 PM

I have to fantasize here. I'd like ALL my Fleetwood Mac and Stevie VCR Tapes (everything from Red Rocks to Mick's Wedding!...the only Holy Grail for me is that infamous "pie fight"!!) on DVD so I can watch them on my little TV in my bedroom. That's where my DVD player lives. :p

GypsySorcerer 08-30-2005 09:50 PM

As of today, in no particular order:

Moulin Rouge
Love Actually
Chicago
Sideways
All About Eve
Some Like it Hot
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Swingers
Ghost
Rebel Without a Cause

Miss Vicky 08-30-2005 09:55 PM

1. Blackadder- The Complete Collector's Set (If you don't want to buy the big expensive set, then just get the second disc by itself, you can't go wrong!)

2. Gladiator (I actually bought this movie three times. First on vhs 'cause I didn't have a dvd player, then I bought the dvd when I got a player, and now they've released an extended version which I had to have as well.)

3. Quills (Even full frontal Geoffrey Rush can't overshadow the gorgeousness of Joaquin Phoenix and Kate Winslet. The acting is really good all around and is a very entertaining movie with lots of dark humor. Don't expect a history lesson though, it's a movie with the Marquis de Sade as a main character, but is not a bio-pic and shouldn't be taken as fact.)

4. The Big Lebowski (OMFG this movie is hilarious!!!!)

5. Clay Pigeons (Did I mention I'm totally in love with Joaquin Phoenix? Oh and Vince Vaughn is great too.)

6. Fight Club (Great movie. Lots of dark humor. And omg is Brad Pitt ripped in this one!)

7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I hate Jim Carrey but this one is a must see. Oh yeah... and Kate Winslet's in it too.)

8. Brotherhood of the Wolf (This one is actually a French horror/martial arts film. Normally I hate foreign films, I hate horror films, and I hate martial arts films but this one was spectacular. Just be sure to go to the languages menu and adjust it to French with English subtitles, otherwise the horrible English language dubbing will drive you crazy.)

9. Catch Me If You Can (Just a very fun movie.)

10. Bubba Ho-Tep (This one is bizarre but hilarious. It's set in a retirement home and is about an aging Elvis impersonator who believes he really is Elvis. His best friend is a wheelchair-bound black man who believes that he is JFK. When the other occupants of the retirement home begin to fall prey to a soul-sucking Egyptian mummy in cowboy duds, they team up to take Bubba Ho-Tep down! )

Love it. Great characters, great script. The "wallet scene" is one of the funniest I've seen in awhile. :D

WildInTheWind 08-30-2005 10:41 PM

I only have 3 DVDS that aren't concerts. :o Dazed and Confused, Almost Famous, and Harold and Maude.

DownOnRodeo 08-31-2005 07:43 AM

I only have one movie on DVD - Contact.

The other DVDs? You guessed it - The Dance and Live in Boston. Too bad I imported as LIB Region 1 and I can't play it. (Why did I do that?!)

I'm worried that once I start buying lots of DVDs, they'll change players and disc formats. Plus, if they do start releasing stuff on these bigger formats, maybe you could have an entire TV show (ie, every season, every episode) on one disc.. :)

I also thought Sideways was great! I think it's laidback jazzy soundtrack helped a lot. Funny movie ;)

GODDESS6 08-31-2005 07:55 AM

the sound of music
silkwood
almost famous
all the halloween's
home for the holidays ( i LUV this movie)
american beauty...
just to name a few & oh yeah the "friday" movies, friday after next & such~ i know i am not a comedic black man in america, but these movies are great for a laughfest~

chiliD 08-31-2005 09:45 AM

Since I got burned by the industry-wide changeover from LaserDisc to DVD (I have a ton of LDs), I haven't really collected many DVDs yet. But, here's how I'd rank what I own:

1) Ken Burns' BASEBALL (10 disc box)

2) Christopher Guest trilogy box (Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, Mighty Wind )

3) Zelig

4) The Last Supper

5) Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind

6) Rick Vito In Concert

7) Greatest American Hero (complete season two)

8) One Step Beyond (the creepy old late 50's/early 60's TV show)

Legends of the Fall

Dazed and Confused

Goodfellas

Best of SNL Will Farrall Volume I

Chappelle's Show seasons 1&2

Cyndi Lauper At Last Live

The Dance

That's all I can think of - I don't really buy too many DVDs

dissention 08-31-2005 11:13 AM

In no particular order:

1. 3 Women (Criterion)
2. Manhattan Murder Mystery (or simply all of Woody's DVDs)
3. Tanner '88 (Criterion)
4. Profit: The Complete Series
5. Moulin Rouge

10. Dogville

Brazil is also one of my favorites; the Criterion release has three different cuts of the movie. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is an awesome DVD set, too.

The US DVD release of Dogville sucks ass, though. :o I have the Korean DVD and it's got a second disc of great extras, including all the press appearances (Cannes, etc.) and the "Dogville Confessions" documentary.

estranged4life 08-31-2005 11:31 AM

Good Question...

1)Queen-Live at Wembley (Show me a better taped concert and I will show you none!)
2)Dream Theater-Live at Budokan (If FM's LIB would have been shot the same way if could actually be watchable to me.)
3)Clerks X (10th anniversary edition)
4)South Park-The Movie (Widescreen only)
5)Kung Pow-Enter the Fist (Again, Widescreen only)
6)Inu Yasha (Anime-The first season)
7)Van Halen-Live Without a Net (Great concert even though the transfer from analog to digital is porr at best)
8)Full Metal Alchemist (Anime-Volume 1-4)
9)Hellboy (3 disc Limited edition w/sculptured busty of Hellboy...A great buy for only $24.99)
10)Witch Hunter Robin (Anime-Complete series)

I have so many I didnt think of a few to I saw 'em mentioned by others on here...The Led Zep DVD set is great, How I forgot that one isnt surprising.

trackaghost 08-31-2005 12:17 PM

Ugh, I can't do a top 10. I've seen way too many DVDs over the years but the following I think every movie buff should have in their collection. They are not necessarilymy favourite movies, but they are just great DVDs.

Led Zeppelin DVD - simply one of the best music DVDs ever, featuring several concerts, rare performances, interviews everything!

Star Wars - all the Star Wars DVDs are lovingly put together, the original trilogy is the best to own, but Episodes I and II are bursting with cool extras.

Almost Famous Bootleg Edition - An extended cut of an already fantastic film and great extras.

Lord Of The Rings Extended Editions - if you want a class in how to make a big budget blockbuster then everything, and I mean everything is included here! Probably the most comprehensive DVDs ever.

This Is Spinal Tap - lots of deleted scenes AND music videos too.

Fight Club - there's a top-notch commentary with Fincher and the cast, multiple angle stuff, deleted scenes, featurettes. Just a really well put-together DVD.

Alien Quadrilogy - nine discs and more than 40 hours of bonus material.

Rushmore/Royal Tenenbaums Criterion Editions - you need to see the DVDs to see just how much detail goes into Anderson's films. The art galleries alone are wonderful.

Citizen Kane/Gone With The Wind - these are two of the best classics on DVD, not just because of the quality of the films, but because of the extras on the DVDs.

Jaws 30th Anniversary Edition - the two-hour documentary on the making of the film is superb.

The Godfather box set - you need to buy the box set to get the excellent bonus disc of extras.

Any Pixar film - Finding Nemo/Toy Story/Monsters Inc etc...

Oh and tonnes more, I could go on but I'm starting to bore myself!

Great one. And it has Cameron Crowe's original Fleetwood Mac article from Rolling Stone and a CD of Nancy Wilson's songs for the movie.

I've had this for two years and still haven't watched all of the stuff on them. I think I only watched all of the extras for Alien 3; it's fascinating to watch the making of a mess. And as a boxed set it rocks because it has two versions of each movie.

If it is the recent one, it's called How The West Was Won...or it came out simultaneously with their live album of that name.

Here's the CDUniverse listing:
