Police: Rap mogul 'Suge' Knight shot in leg
Witness: Shot rang out at party's VIP section

Sunday, August 28, 2005; Posted: 3:44 a.m. EDT (07:44 GMT)

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (AP) -- Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was shot in the leg early Sunday during a party hosted by Grammy-winning hip hop artist Kanye West, police said.

Knight, 40, was hospitalized in good condition, police said. He was shot during a celebrity-studded party at the Shore Club, one of the many celebrations in Miami Beach ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards scheduled Sunday night, said Miami Beach Police Officer Bobby Hernandez.

Sonja Mauro, a guest at the club, said a shot in the party's VIP section rang out shortly before 1 a.m.

"I was in there and I heard a pop and I ran out and got trampled," she said.

People attending the party began screaming and running for the doors, she said.

Celebrities who attended included West, actress Jessica Alba and comedian Eddie Murphy, but it was unclear whether they were still there when the shooting took place.

Knight co-founded the pioneering rap label Death Row Records and hit the charts in the 1990s with West Coast stars including Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

Knight was convicted in 1992 of assault and weapons violations and was placed on probation. In 1996, he was jailed for five years for violating probation after he and several associates, including Shakur, were recorded on videotape beating a gang rival at a Las Vegas hotel. Shakur was later shot to death in Las Vegas.

Relatives of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G. have also accused Knight of involvement in B.I.G.'s death, though police have never named Knight as a suspect.

Knight continues to operate his label, now called Tha Row.

Attempts to reach a spokesman for West early Sunday were unsuccessful. A message left with an MTV representative was not immediately returned.

I'm going to flip it on a couple of times in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the Madonna documentary and to hear the clip of her new single, but otherwise, fug no.

Don't even bother trying to get the clips of her new single online, they're all fake files. I must have downloaded 30 different ones.

Like all the Music fake files?

"What the F*CK do you think you're doing???"

vermicious knid 08-28-2005 01:38 PM

Ha! I have seen those all over Limewire. I was just going to wait until it came out on the radio and not spoil it for myself by downloading it.

amber 08-28-2005 01:46 PM

I'm really sad I don't have MTV, because I want to see the Gwen show tonight..... :D

on perez..
"Gwen Stefani, the most nominated artist at the MTV Video Music Awards, was set to boycott the ceremony because she was not bestowed a performance spot. However, Miss Estefan(i), as we shall call her during this weekend, was spotted at the Ritz on Saturday, and an MTV insider insists that she will be performing at the ceremony after all!"

I would have been upset if she didn't perform, too.

There's another report that he was actually shot in the ass.

Janet 08-28-2005 02:08 PM

I have to work. I will miss it. I usually watch it but anymore if I need a day off it usually doesn't come to me.

I hope it sucks LOL.

SapphireSister 08-28-2005 02:19 PM

RE: Suge Knight - why am I not the least bit surprised? That's so typical...

I am defintely watching the awards tonight. Lord knows they are not what they used to be, they are very hip-hop oriented but I'll still tune in for sure and look forward to chatting about it tomorrow. I miss the days of Madonna rolling on the floor to "Like a Virgin". They sucked big time last year but I still want to see.

Janet 08-28-2005 02:22 PM

I just heard Gwen IS performing. I'm pissed. I wanted to see her.

I need cable at work.

I can't wait until October 17th, especially knowing that it's floating around out there!

Why the leg or ass? That man is HUGE - I just don't see how anybody aiming from even 50 feet away could miss. Not that I'm condoning that, of course, but it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Of course, the cynic in me wonders if it all could have been a PR stunt. First lesbian kisses, now gunplay. Next year: lesbian gunplay.

Do you think there's any chance Madonna will show up tonight as a surprise? I mean *any* chance? THAT would be cool.

ontheEdgeof17 08-28-2005 03:18 PM

I have to work. :distress:

I'll just watch one of the many reruns sometime this week. I prefer the reruns....cuts out all the "mistakes" and boring parts.

estranged4life 08-28-2005 05:01 PM

I'd only watch...

if there was a chance of a terrorist attacking this excuse for an 'awards show'...Why does Empty-Vee have an awards show when they show videos as often as Lindsey Buckingham releases a new solo album???

I hope she performs "cool". I prefer it so much to that crappy one, hollaback girl. But I do really like cool!

Cool is my fave song on the album. Altho I disagree that HB is crappy - it's just really really different. ;)

Crappy was a harsh word. It just seems so teeny-bop to me. She went from a rocker to that and it wasn't pretty. I must say "cool" redeemed her. I have no clue why she would do a song like hollaback girl.

I would love to see her do Cool too, but I really don't see it fitting in at the VMAs. It's on the subdued side, and I can't imagine what kind of stage show she could do for it. I love the video, too. I always thought she was pretty, but she looks freekin gorgeous in every shot.

SapphireSister 08-28-2005 06:42 PM

I really hope she performs. I have to say I've really fallen in love with her since this album came out. She kind of bugged me when she was with No Doubt. I mean I think they are a really really great band and I dig some of their songs but something wasn't right. After I got her solo album things totally changed and now I'm in love. I may even try to grab some tickets for her show with The Black Eyed Peas here in LA. I don't go to concerts too often (with the exception of La Nicks) but I think it would be great to see her with those cute little Asian girls. I love the costumes, the dancing. I could go on and on. She rocks and I'm buying a pair of her L.A.M.B sneakers and soon as I save $125 to pay for them.

LiquidBlue5000 08-28-2005 07:43 PM

i swear this pitiful excuse of an award show gets stranger and stranger every year..

LiquidBlue5000 08-28-2005 08:22 PM

why is the self-absorbed asshole named DIDDY talking about his stupid name change instead of sending out prayers to those poor people stuck in New Orleans??? can someone please shoot him? thanks

GypsySorcerer 08-28-2005 08:27 PM

I think it's boring this year.

skcin 08-28-2005 09:17 PM

By far the worst VMA's ever. It's painful. Every time they get shots of celebrities they all look confused.

It's like the "Diddy and Friends" show. Talk about your cliques.

Dreammms 08-28-2005 09:31 PM

R KELLEY SUCKS. That was the most annoying **** ever. Why would MTV put that **** on????????????

Beavis & Butthead were mildly amusing when I was 15. Not anymore. Away with them, please.

I am waiting for Kelly Clarkson.

Different?! It's a pathetic excuse for a song. :p

Not to mention that she comes across as absolutely ridiculous singing such a thing when she's pushing 40.

I love the video too! I actually understood what was going on in it when I watched it. Some what of a storyline to it. LOVE IT!

Seriously, I can't watch the VMAs because I loathe everything about Kanye West.

skcin 08-28-2005 10:17 PM

"Cool" is cool. Diss is not.

Mariah was OK if you're into her. I really liked My Chemical Romance. That about sums up any positive thoughts I have.

WTF was with MC Hammer doing a 2 minute routine?

WTF did Jessica Simpson have on?

WhyTF did Eve Longoria come out in a fugly bathing suit?

WTF is up with Shakira? She is hot as hell, but she moves strangley.

WTF was with those clowns rapping?

WTF was up with Eric Roberts plugging his stepson's CD?

WTF possessed them to refer to Hillary Duff as "rock's Beyonce?" Really, she's a rock star, huh?

WhoTF is Daddy Yankee & why are they singing about Gasolina?

WhoTF is Bishop Magic Don Juan?

Could Paris Hilton have looked any uglier? WTF was up with the old lady hair? And her & Bow Wow comparing "bling" or "ice" or whatever the kids call it these days - really tasteful, with the hurricane & the war & other "petty" things going on.

Dreammms 08-28-2005 10:20 PM

wow kelly you suck bad

LiquidBlue5000 08-28-2005 10:22 PM

I usually love her too. I just thought she sounded really bad. It was basically screaming. Shredded her vocal chords or something.

BTW - I thought Gwen looked great tonight. And Diss, you'll be thrilled to know The Killers got "Best New Artist." :D
