Bare Upper Arms

This might take some research on my part, but maybe some of you clothes watchers of Stevie would know this:

When was the last time Stevie kept her upper arms bare onstage (generally in a danskin or bikini top)? I want to say the Wild Heart tour. Any bare upper arms since then?

Is this a fashion that's totally extinct in Stevie's wardrobe?

amber 08-23-2005 04:56 PM

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Almost never. I think right around WH...but then, I'm not good with these things...

ontheEdgeof17 08-23-2005 05:07 PM

Well...Tango/BTM eras, she wore these dressy thingies:

If you are counting soundchecks, Stevie did a show in Florida in '96 and had a bare arm purple dress on.

After a certain age, bare upper arms are often not flattering....

I was watching the San Jose 10/20/89 show the other night and I think it was during BATB she had on the bustier and these weird stocking-like things on her arms and the hooded cape. So there were times that you could see the upper arm/shoulders area. It looked a little weird. :o Not sure if this really counts.

Also during the ENCHANTED TOUR she often wore a bare arm dress, although often with a shawl over it--however you could often see the arms..lol

That Jones Beach photo is gorgeous! I'm saving that one.

I guess it counts, although I can't remember that particular aspect.

But, for example, the shot Curtis posted of Stevie at a November or December Tango show definitely counts -- I had forgot all about that (it's no wonder, really).

So at this point, we'll say that 1987 & possibly 1989 was the last time. I don't think she had bare upper arms all the way to her shoulder during the St. Petersburg Pier soundcheck in '96. In fact, I remember that dress as having puffy or loose short sleeves.

EDIT: NOPE, CURTIS IS TOO FAST. Okay, now we're up to the Enchanted tour. Those definitely count. Doesn't matter if there was a shawl over them. Those are bare upper arms that are still visible!!

yea I remember on How Still My Love she came out with that. They were like kinda gloves and they went kinda on her shoulders but then fell off sorta.

WOW! You're right...I bet they used that photo to design the pin. Very cool...

Josh2003 08-24-2005 01:29 AM

I bought that pin about five years ago (I think) and that picture was the first thing I thought of when I saw it.

On some interview, Stevie mentioned Lindsey asked her to tone down her wardrobe for the Say You Will. Of course Stevie being the Gemini that she is, took it to the extreme and wore the "granny" top. I think it's cute actually. Pearl buttons.

I didn't really mind the top either. The only thing that really bothered me was that the first leg of SYW she barely changed anything. Same old boring shawls.

diamondsnake 08-25-2005 12:59 AM

I actually prefer that Stevie covers up any "problem areas" she may have. I'd rather leave her upper arms up to the imagination. I look at a lot of the older rock woman who wear truely inappropriate things that no 50 something woman should be wearing (debbi harry) and I just cringe. I think Stevie dresses totally cool but still age appropriate and she doesn't show us any part of her body that may or may not be as toned as she wants it to be. And that's fine by mean.

Besides, she reveals so much skin in other areas (her cleavage this tour was a sight to behold!) that it sort of makes up for it.

Ya know, why in the hell would Lindsey care what she wears anyway??? And who is he to be telling her to cover up? After all, his shirt was unbuttoned down to his stomach almost every night, but that's ok right? Idiot!

trackaghost 08-25-2005 02:37 PM

I'm glad Stevie stays covered up these days.
I call it growing old gracefully myself.

I doubt he does care, at least not much. But a single quote from Stevie was, in my opinion, sort of stretched & taken out of context. Stevie makes it sound as if Lindsey just sort of made some subtle or maybe not-too-subtle comment about Stevie's traditional flamboyance in onstage dress; & out of that come all the fans believing that he did God knows what ... demand that she not wear such-and-such or cut her down or forced her to follow his wishes ... so know he's the "idiot" & the horse's ass once again.

That is how stories are told
Songs are written
Rumors are started

The Heartbreak of Arm Hang. Takes a lot of triceps extensions to fix that one.

Hee Hee!! Gotta love Lindsey... But she was back to old self on her last tour. I, for one, wish she'd go back to bare arms for at least a few songs.
