Over And Over

This has always been one of my absolute favorite songs of hers, and it doesn't seem to get talked about much. I personally think it's her best song on Tusk, and my personal favorite or hers, save only for Songbird. What do others think? :)

jbrownsjr 08-22-2005 12:30 PM

I love the jam at the end!

Speaking of jams, isnt Peter Green playing at the end of Brown Eyes?

And it's one of the only songs that was better live, than the studio version.

I've actually got an excellent recording of it from Mobile Alabama on 8-11-80. Fantastic harmonies :)

Yes, he certainly is.

I have this "thing" against "Over & Over" due to it being the opening track...it makes for a totally lousy album opener. It should've ENDED one of the sides (except side 4..."Never Forget" is a classic album closer), not been the lead-off track. Christine HAD the most logical opening track for the album..."Honey Hi"...it would've changed the whole feel of the album...made it a "lighter" album. With "Over & Over" as the opener, it sets up the album to be just WAY too "dark".

I have a feeling that Lindsey didn't want a "lighter album".

By the way, I agree about "Over And Over" being better live than the album version. Every live version I've ever heard is fantastic.

Definitely. It was among the highlights in every concert it was included. And it was always intriguingly different, in some aspect.

It always has seemed to come down to "what Lindsey wants", doesn't it? ;)

I adore Over and Over. I think it's a fantastic song. I've always had a problem with the percussion, though. It sounds so beautiful in the beginning, with just the piano, and then the drums kick in and it seems off and rushed. I wish it was just a Christine/piano track.

i agree the drums make it cluncky (is that a word)?

I think the word is "clunky". :)

I have to admit that the first time I heard it I wanted the percussion to go away, but I got to thinking that it works out just right. I would say that it's the best Chris song on Tusk if it weren't for my love affairs with "Brown Eyes" and "Never Forget." It's definitely underrated.

Well, I don't think it did in the case of the Say You Will. What do y'all think?

over and over is a great song. . .especially when you are drunk. it goes down real easy. :o but like hillary, i have a love affair with 'brown eyes', so sometimes i skip everything on tusk just to get to that. . .

PenguinHead 08-23-2005 10:41 AM

I love "Over and Over," even though the lyrics are rather thin. The production makes the song.

I really love the version on the Live album. But when you compare it to the actual live performances on the bootlegs, you realize that a lot of post studio vocal work was added. In particular the "ooo's" that Stevie and Lindsey do during the chorus, and when they follow Christine's "and don't let me down" with "let me down again." None of that was ever sung in actual performance. I wonder why. Laziness?

There is an outtake of Over and Over which sadly wasn't included on the Tusk outtake disk. At the end of the song, the "over and over" line features all three voices very prominently --and it doesn't fade out as soon. It really highlights their harmonies.

Over and Over from the Live album is one of my favorite Mac moments. I think it highlights their ability to harmonize (even if they "cheated") and Chris's keyboard playing...is there an additional keyboard player on this song??? I know someone is given credit for additional keyboards on the Live album but it isn't mentioned as to which songs. Gosh I wish Chris would come back to the Mac.

gldstwmn 08-23-2005 11:38 PM

My favorite version is the one on the Tusk reissue, disc 2. Just like candy. :)

That guy just played on the song "Tusk" on the tour, but nothing on the live album.

And I said, 'Could it be me?'

Great to see Over & Over get some love!

One of my favourite FM songs. Not sure what was meant by the percussion being clunky, although it I suppose that it's fairly simplistic .. but it's the simplicity of the instrumentation and lyrics in this song that I like so much.

I often play this followed by Sara. They're like 'sister songs' almost, in my mind. Very similar in many ways.

INteresting. I've never really thought of it that way

I don't see O&O as an opener which purpose was to reflect a dark or lighter album. I always thought it was to give the message Hey, this is not Rumours 2. Then I always assumed that it was Lindsey who chose it to open the album. But I also wonder if Christine wanted that song to open Tusk. I mean if she had to choose one of her songs as track 1 of side 1, would it be O&O or would she choose another?

chiliD had always interestings and many times different points of view anyway. I miss him.

I think Angel should have been the opener.
