What Does Everyone Think Of....
With the recent discussions of the sketches and paintings of Stevie that have been up for auction on eBay, and the outrageous prices attached to them, I was wondering what everyone thought of this sketch....

I think it's decent but a tiny bit lopsided-looking, especially in the eyes. It is very difficult to capture the essence of a person in a portrait from looking at a photograph. People can look at a picture and then take their pencil and start drawing it and get very close to reproducing it by simply shading where they see dark and leaving alone where they see light, but does this capture the essence of a person? And furthermore, is it an artistic endeavor?
When I first got "obsessed" with Stevie I did some pencil sketches by looking at photos of her, and although I got a lot of compliments on them and was even able to trade some of them for actual Stevie items (by doing a Johanna Pietermann type thing and sketching people "with" Stevie, LOL), I sort of cringe now when I look at my "work." It's just not art as far as I'm concerned. But oh well, it was fun while it lasted. And that sketch is pretty good for what it is! |
I think its pretty good, it has its flaws, but it does have promise, who ever the artist is....
There is also a big difference in the way certain artists use photos to capture their subjects... yes sketching/painting someone in person does take on a different power, the brush strokes are wider, the focus turns more towards the weight & color of the flesh, the light & shadow expressed with colors instead of black & white, and likeness is usually not as important. I believe that using photos is fine for likenesses, certain landscapes, still lifes w/ fixed lighting, etc. It is important to capture the essence of the person, & some artists successfully execute this through distortion, exaggeration, or exact likeness. Okay, I'm done rambling now ;) For anyone interested in art, here's a link to one of my favorite artists, Liz Lomax, she went to my school, then taught there for a while, & she came to speak with us last semester. She's a 3D artist & kicks ass!www.lizlomax.com ~Carei |
Johnny if that is one of yours I highly suggest you put it up...I think it is great.

I think that sketch is better than the paintings. Also I think that Trackaghost's sketch for the contest was better than the paintings. But, I don't like paintings like that, and I don't like Joanna Peterman's work! There, I said it!
There was a girl on here some time ago who did a really great black ink thing of stevie....that was good...I was almost considering it for a tattoo, it was so good. I'll try to find it. So, yeah, I think that sketch captures the Steve-ster very well. One note, her eyes look like they are not quite focused on the same thing, or are slightly crossed, or something. But....I know how hard that is to capture...so... |

But I mean, i really like that. Really. I wish it was big, and on my wall. And for the record, I only have one stevie pic on my wall. |

I'll confess... it is one of my sketches actually. I drew it when I was around 19 years old ("that was a long time ago...."). Didn't want to say that though when I posted it, because I wanted honest criticism. When I look at it these days, I agree with Amber that her eyes look a bit crossed. I also think her face is too long. But I like how her hair came out, if that doesn't sound too conceited. No intentions of selling it though (not sure that anyone would even want it!), but, heck, if those other sketches/paintings of Stevie fetch a pretty penny, I just might reconsider! Your work is pretty awesome, Carei... very stylish, very unique, and very STEVIE. :D |

Well, if you really, really like it, I'll be willing to sell you a print, a huge one if I can get it made that big, I'd have to talk to some people though. No else has got a print of that one. But no pressure.... I'm sure everyone's bank accounts are drained from concerts....but I would give you a fair price, or your best offer  ~Carei |

As for you my friend, don't ever feel bad about being proud of your work! You were quite young at the time, so of course it looks a little strange to you now, I feel the same way when I look at my work from high school, it amazing how much you can develope within a few years. You should keep up with your art because you do have potential! Take a drawing or painting class if you have the time, or just pick up some stuff at an art store & get started again, you just might surprise yourself! ~Carei |
Thanks littlecricket2 & Mokona!

Good shoes are very important. |
I like the sketch, Brian. The hair is great and her lips are almost perfect. (My favorite Stevie facial feature.) :wavey:

Yeah, i'm a sucker for pumas... they run small, so my size 5 midget foot can get away with a 5 1/2! |

Pumas are hella cute, though. |

Johnny I LOVE the sketch. You are very, very talented. I wish I could draw! I love your attention to detail. The eyes and hair are amazing. Wow. How long did that take you? Did you use a photo?
Carie - I forgot about those! I love your work. Can you please post some more of your Stevie drawings? They are seriously some of the best I've seen and they have so much character. Very unique, just like Stevie :). |
Johnny and Carei - your drawings are absolutely beautiful!! Ashley drew some beautiful ones too - you guys are so very talented!

Style of art.....this is not quite Stevie

This isn't a pic of Stevie .....but as some have expressed a dislike for Johanna Pietermans art what do you think of this style of art?
(Some of you might know this image, even own it. :) ) |
I think that is beautiful. Some drawings I see I cannot tell "who" "who" it is supposed to be, this one, I can not only tell it is Stevie, but I know the photo it was drawn from, really gorgeous!~Barbara

It's very nice, I especially like the intensity in the eyes and the sense of vulnerability that comes from it.

Here are all of my Stevie pieces....the first one is a painting, the others are ink drawings, the last one is a small collage. "Taken By The Sky" is the newest. I sold prints of the first two, back in April. I usually do a Stevie drawing every couple of months, but right now I'm working on character illustrations or crazy stuff from my imagination.... I would LOVE to write & illustrate children's books one day, maybe even animation.....I'd kill to work for Tim Burton! |

I also love the contrast of the deep pink shade and the aqua blue in "dareherwildheart' and look at those eyes! That color blue is breathtaking! I just realized there is a crescent moon in there also. Is it actually on Stevie or did you just add it in there? How did you make the Stevie collage? Did you scan anything in there? The image of Stevie and the leaves look so authentic. I really really love your work girlfriend! |

"Taken By The Sky" & "The Three Birds of Rhiannon" are done by hand, tiny dots placed all together, the bigger darker areas are filled in. Pink & Blue is my favorite limited palette to use when painting.... pink is "Alizerian Crimsom" (thats totally spelled wrong  ) & that blue you love is called "Brilliant Blue" in the Liquetex brand, I buy a new bottle every year cause i love it so much! The painting was done on masonite (a very thick compressed board, almost like wood) & crescent moon is actually carved into the board, as well as the "wild heart" & the song lyrics. If you look closely, you can make them out~ "Rock a Little" next to her, first line of "Gold & Braid" over the heart, & "Dreams unwind...." to the right. There are also layers of hand made paper under the paint to give the painting texture. Now for the collage.... its all done by hand (no computer grafics) & mounted on chip board. The materials consist of hand made paper (aqua & Red), fabric (pink), some netting & lace from fabric scraps, the leaf is actually made from paper that I bought at Kate's Paperie in NY, the image of Stevie was tranfered on to the hand made paper by photocopying the image & then using a transfer marker, which stinks up your whole room & makes you dizzy as hell! |

I love Johanna's art, and have a whole page devoted to it on my website. I think she captures Stevie and everything she draws, so well. She drew an amazing portrait of my daughter Rhiannon that we cherish. I also love Trackaghost's beautiful painting ~ her 'Sister Of The Moon' was breathtakingly gorgeous, and I've seen a few other pieces by her, courtesy of Pip, some time ago...a very talented lady. Carei is another fabulous artist ~ she sent me three of her outstanding drawings that are posted on my website...and I welcome anyone who would like their Stevie/Mac art posted with Carei's to feel free to contact me. :wavey: |
