Like or Dislike: I Will Run To You

I've heard several times over the years that most people don't really like this song. I am not one of those people. I think it's wonderful. First of all, I'm a sucker for all things Petty, I think the man is a genius. Plus, this song rocks! It's not in my top 10 or anything, but I never understood why so much hate for this tune.

I don't think I can really compare it to SDMHA, because I get such a different feel from each of them. But I think I can honestly say I like IWRTY more. Insider is a different story  . But I digress.

The music - classic Heartbreakers from the first notes you hear. Eternally cool. Love it.

The lyrics sound desparate, like "I will do anything" My favorite (mainly for Stevie's vocal on "show some mercy hunay!"):

"Make it easy for me
I been lonely baby
Show some mercy honey
I was nothing
All those lonely nights
Showed me something
If you need me
I'll come runnin'"

Their harmonies are solid - it doesn't take my breath away (like Insider does) but it's good. Stevie's very strong on this song, and she always sounds great with Tom.

Neal 08-16-2005 01:44 PM

Eh, 'SDMHA' it ain't... :distress:

GateandGarden 08-16-2005 02:02 PM

"Insider" it ain't.

But I do like it. I went through a phase (when I first got WH) when I listened to it all the time, but I got over that relatively quickly. I like it but don't love it.

Hawkeye 08-16-2005 02:40 PM

I prefer Insider and SDMHA by a long shot but I still really like I Will Run to You. Its a great song. I love the way Stevie sings the first few lines of the song.

eclipse 08-16-2005 02:57 PM

I always skip it- Tom just sounds too whinny for my tastes- In fact he has sounded whinny even since- Breakdown
I said something bad about Tom Petty  , shall I run away now??

I will always run away....
sorry Tom fans,
~eclipse~

AliceLover 08-16-2005 02:58 PM

My least favorite Stevie song ever. Especially Live....Good God that was terrible.

amber 08-16-2005 03:00 PM

I like it quite a bit. It's very strange, and I love stevie's solo verse, and, is it just me, but does she sound extra super twangy-drawly on it?

Yu-ew, haayd tiiiime...come arouwwwwnd...wull you please meayk up yoh miynd...

I love the verse Paula quoted, too.
To my ears, it's an unusual sounding song, the harmony is strange, and I like it.
and, like others said, Tom and Stevie together is gold.

dissention 08-16-2005 03:01 PM

I prefer it to "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around". One of her best duets, imo.

trackaghost 08-16-2005 03:10 PM

Ha! I'm the only one who has given it top ranking!
I love every song on TWH. It is by far her best album.
I wish she would try to be that adventurous (within the confines of a pop song that is) again...

Edit: second person now, drat! Who is the other person then? speak up!

TDee 08-16-2005 03:10 PM

I love this song...their voices are gorgeous together...so 70's/80's with the synths...which I love. Her voice when she says 'come around' is just the greatest. It's what makes Stevie, 'Stevie'. NO ONE has that voice...

Considering that The Wild Heart was such a polished-sounding record, this one sticks out like a sore thumb. It has this random beginning that just comes out of nowhere with random guitar noodlings, which has always irked me. It just sounds unfinished.

SapphireSister 08-16-2005 03:22 PM

Not a fan. I don't like the melody. I don't hate it but don't like it either.

I Will Run To You is hot. I used to not really like this song, until about 10 years ago, and then one day....I remember it so well.....that part where they sing together....

"Make it easy for me
I've been lonely, baby
Show some mercy, honey!
I was nothing
All those lonely nights showed me something baby
If you need me.... I'll come running...."

Oh, it struck such a chord...the desperation and passion in their voices. If I didn't know better, this song would have me believe that Stevie and Tom were keeping some pretty intense mutual attraction under wraps... Eeew.

Like all of The Wild Heart....this one sounds much more vibrant on vinyl.

WildInTheWind 08-16-2005 04:44 PM

I gave it the top ranking. My 2nd favorite on the WH. I love the opening guitar riff. I don't know, it's a very different song. It's sexy and they both sound great IMO.

I didnt used to be a bif fan of it, but lately, I'm really starting to love it. Its not "Insider" (thanks Romy, btw that live version kicks ass), but its great. I love the desperation in Stevie's voice, imo. Also, the Heartbreakers music just kicks ass. All in all, not the first song that comes to mind if asked my fave songs, but definately one I really really enjoy.

I agree with Paula that any Tom/Stevie collaboration is a good thing. I do love this song and I really like Stevie vocals on it too. I give it a

That's the first line that comes to mind when I think of this song. That's one of my favourite Stevie singing bits right there...that one line. I love IWRTY more than SDMHA and maybe more than Insider. Definitely a 5 star song for me.

Miss Vicky 08-17-2005 09:42 AM

Petty can do no wrong.

Mr. Wonderful 08-17-2005 04:51 PM

IWRTY rocks!

I totally agree with both of those!! :)

[email protected] 08-17-2005 04:53 PM

I will run...

This is another one, first off, I didn't love, but then I heard HER voice...some songs, her voice just blows me away...the soft vibrato, not grating or loud, but THERE...and she sounds so fragile, but we know she is so strong when she needs to be, she is MAGICK!

Richard B 08-17-2005 04:57 PM

Raw and gritty. LOVE it. Always have and always will.

michelle2677 08-17-2005 10:15 PM

I put most of the time...
I couldn't give it the top rating becuase tragically....(I'm so ashamed) I just discovered this song. But I DO love it! :D

Great addition to the album

I have always loved this song. The sound is different but cool.

Oh I just love this song so much, it's easily in my top 15. Someone mentioned that it ain't SDMHA, and thank god for that, that's my least favorite Stevie song :sorry: Something about the way she and Tom harmonize on this song just gets me everytime, and I'm addicted to the twangy vocal.

I'd take I will Run to You over SDMHA any day!! I do like SDMHA, but there is something about I WIll Run to You that gets me.

I totally agree...I think all their duets are great, but that SDMHA is the weakest. Insider and IWRTY are absolute perfection.

Um... yeah. Totally what she said! Honestly, I love this song, and you've put into workds exactly how I feel about all three of those songs! Only difference: it is most definitely in my Top 10 Evah.

100% agree! I love I Will Run to You- actually more than most of her duets- more than SDMHA and Leather & Lace for sure! :)

Jondalar 03-17-2013 08:38 AM

Tom Petty would of never put this song on his album. It's a throwaway. Stevie's vocal sucks too.

bluefox4000 03-17-2013 09:19 AM

It's ok. But the Chorus honks me off......IIIIIIIIIIIIIII will run to you. The dragged out I is just so.....whiny and grating. I'm not a fan of her Tom Petty collaborations anyway. Yes, even SDMHA.

I agree with you that this song is a complete throwaway. What I completely disagree with you on is that the vocals, particularly Stevie's lovely harmony singing with Tom on the chorus, is the only redeeming reason to include this song on a record. "The Wild Heart" really should have included the solid rocker "Violet & Blue" in its place instead. And I would toss out the other throwaway - "Gate & Garden" and replace with "All The Beautiful Worlds" - which sounded like a hit song to my ears (especially back in 83') which would make "The Wild Heart" pretty near perfect in my estimation.

I'm torn....I totally get what you are saying...and I'm not a big fan of her and Tom (recorded version).

But I love the fact that she has a musical relationship with him and the Heartbreakers. I simply Love SN "I Need To Know", "Free Fallin".

A concert with them and Dave Stewart would rock my world and I'd love to hear them do a new, hard rock version of "Don't Come Around Here"

starshine 03-17-2013 01:55 PM

I've never really liked this song much. Compared with SDMHA & Insider IWRTY is just lame really. I won't say I hate it but I don't like it much either. I think All The Beautiful Worlds should've been on WH in place of this song at least IMO. Its almost like Stevie felt she 'had to' include it since TP wrote it for her but I don't think it really goes with the WH lp as a whole. Out of place really.:D

Machu 03-17-2013 05:55 PM

I never understood the hate for this song. I love everything about it.

mitzo 03-17-2013 06:47 PM

To me it is just "meh." But a bit better, I suppose, than a bunch of Petty-inspired junk from that time era, such as Violet and Blue, Blue Lamp, I Need to Know, Gold and Braid, and large festering piles of Belladonna.
