Could this be the beginning of a new album?

As we all have come to know, Stevie Nicks lost her father on Wednesday, August 10th. Her tour is now officially over, and she has returned home to be with her family in their time of mourning. Stevie's most powerful and emotional songs have come out of the worst and saddest times of her life. At this time, Stevie's family, friends, and fans look up to her to stay strong and not give up her dream. Does anyone (besides me) think that this tragedy could re-open the door for Stevie to release another solo album, and have it dedicated to her father, and the impact he has had on her life?

gldstwmn 08-14-2005 12:02 PM

Quite possible. :)

DrummerDeanna 08-14-2005 12:25 PM

Anything is possible - I'm sure she's writing like mad around this time as emotions are probably high.

diamondsnake 08-14-2005 12:44 PM

That is exactly what I thought when I read her letter/poem about her Dad on the Nicksfix. I am sure we will see those words in a new song on a new album. Like you said, tragedy and heartache generally kickstart her songs. Perhaps her life was just too carefree for her to write anything that she felt was substantial the last few years. I think she is going to want to write something and put something out to remember her father.

my thoughts exactly!!! That was the first thing that ran through my head when I heard about her dad dying. I know that is probably one of the worst things to think of at a time like this, but it is sad and exciting all at the same time!!!

LiquidBlue5000 08-14-2005 02:20 PM

ok people.. let's not get tacky about this ;)

Stevie just lost her father of almost 60 years... i think writing new songs and coming out with a new album is probably the furthest thing from her mind right now...

is it possible that this great loss will inspire her?? perhaps... but on the same token, it may make her reflect on her home life and want to spend more time with her mom from now on - thus no new album, no new songs, no new tours..

DrummerDeanna 08-14-2005 02:33 PM

Well **** - we're not saying she should put out a new album tomorrow

I think all people are saying is that in the past Stevie has been inspired to write beautiful things out of tragic and/or sad things that have happened in her life and/or the lives of family and friends.

yeah, i know... i just think it's a little too soon to be talking about this.. and also that it could in fact have the opposite effect on her than it has in the past..

Well anything is possible....no one is saying that now that her dad has died she should start writing

If someone wants to discuss future possibilities more power to them - I don't really think anyone is saying anything tacky or innapropriate. We're just saying that the Stevie as we know her is a prolific writer - I think it's very cathartic for her to write- and that some of her best material has come out of sorrow

wolfontherun 08-14-2005 03:49 PM

When a parent dies they leave a part of themselves with their loved ones, and they also take a part of their loved ones with them.

I hope we havent lost any of the Stevie we all know and love.

Intersesting that this tour was her best in years and years. Maybe she knew things were about to change drastically.

SteveMacD 08-14-2005 03:59 PM

I think it's really hard to speculate at this time how it will affect Stevie. Christine retired when her dad passed, Lindsey became a rock star a few years after his dad passed, and Mick appeared to go nuts for a few years after his dad passed. It's such an individual thing that it's hard to know what Stevie's next move will be. I bet she stays in the biz, though.

Johnny Stew 08-14-2005 04:25 PM

I told Joshua the other day that I wouldn't be surprised if Stevie retires now or very soon.
The death of Christine's father seemed to exacerbate her desire to quit touring and to spend more time at home with loved ones, and I can see the passing of Mr. Nicks having the same effect on Stevie.

On the flip-side, Mr. Nicks always had a "the show must go on" attitude, so maybe Stevie will be more determined than ever to get her music out there, to honor her father's spirit.

nwestohiofan 08-14-2005 04:26 PM

What next?

She is an 'artist'....'artists' are inspired to creat art....there will be more of Stevie to come.

Whaaat?

wolfontherun 08-14-2005 07:34 PM

To what?

Sorry i should have elaborated a bit. If she knew he didnt have much time left, she may have saw this tour as her last chance to perform without the heartache of the loss of a parent.

One still has a certain amount of innocence when both parents are alive, some of it goes away when they do. Iv never seen her have so much fun on stage, she was everthing really, playfull, sexy, girlish, intense, visibly emotional.

Not saying those things will go away, but she will never be the same and I think she knew that on some level during this tour and it showed.

the fact that she seemed to have this "whats the point of recording a new album if no one is gonna buy it" attitude before all of this happened, i'm gonna say that that has probably doubled at this point...

i mean, she's sorta done it all... and her life is changing... i think it's sad that her last two solo tours have been lowlighted with two tragic events (9/11 in 2001 and now her father passing).

Psycologically, that in itself may have an effect on her...

i hope she can bounce back and continue on... but i dunno... i had the sense in Las Vegas that that was going to be her last solo concert ever.. i told everyone around me about my feeling... i hope i was wrong, but i think i could very well have been right

I still say Stevie never said "Why make an an album if it won't sell well"... that comment was implied by the journalist- not Stevie, in my opinion.

Well, first of all, 9/11 is a different story because it was a tragedy that happened during her TISL solo tour, and was a world event. It had a major impact on her tour because some people didn't attend, and didn't buy anymore tickets. Excitment for her tour was not a priority for people anymore, and through her concerts, Stevie tried to give people hope and ease them of their pain. With her father passing, that happened after her solo tour was over, and did not have an affect on her performance during the tour, or on the amount of tickets purchesed, and excited fans attending the concerts. So to compare the two doesn't work because they are two different circumstances in which one had an affect on her 2001 TISL solo tour, and the other did not affect her just completed 2005 summer solo tour.

i beg to differ that her father didnt affect her performance on this tour... she was crying during "landslide" in Phoenix after dedicating it to her dad, so something must have been up... and while they are two completely different tragedies, they are still two tragedies that overshadowed both of her last two solo tours....

Very true, her father's illness did have an affect on her recent performances, but that doesn't automatically mean she will stop performing or recording because of the tragedy of her father's passing or the tragedy of 9/11. I think because of these two tragedies, people look up to her to stay strong, and give them hope and peace through her own self, and through her own music. (which is the one thing that keeps her strong through these hard times)

This is true, as much as I hate to say it, I don't care what anyone says, after she 'd announced to us all (in phoenix) that her dad had broken his leg, she seemed distracted, and just ready for the preformance to be over. Understandably so.

Yea... I touched on this in a few threads, but nobody picked it up so I guess I should have started a "new" thread on the subject. Or maybe it's me... I'm either too lame or I smell bad. :D

But, um.. definitely, lots of good new stuff.

I agree. I am sure she could do a benefit here and there but I have said all along, this was her last solo tour. People just do not want to believe that though. She was sooo good for reasons besides the love of it. Maybe looking forward to a new life might have been part of it.
As far as a new album goes, there will be no new album.
Oops! IMHO.

She has pretty much finally admitted that she wanted to stop recording. The stuff about "no one hearing it" was brought up by the interviewer and Stevie latched on to that. She really could not just stand up and say, "hey I dont want to complete my contractual obligations" when she owes WB two albums.
As far as staying strong for her fans, well that is just too much to put on her shoulders. 9/11 had a huge impact on Stevie's life...perhaps it made her realize she want so spend time with her loved ones even more? The loss of her Father has devastated her and she really does not have to stay strong. She lost one of her best friends, her closest family member and it is ok if she wants to fall apart for awhile. She does not owe us anything. It is certainly not her responsiblity to help us through our own tragedies, IMHO. She has done for others for decades and at this point in her life, she might be looking for something different.
Stevie trying to "stay strong" after Robin's death had tragic consequences. She needs time to grieve, time to reflect and time to relax. An album is the last thing on her mind. Writing is probably very theraputic and she is most likely writing like a mad woman. However, that does not mean she will turn her constant writing into new songs. Stevie will always write.

Did someone say above that her performance was not affected this tour by her Dad's illness?? Wow. Of course it was.

irishgrl 08-15-2005 06:36 AM

"....sometimes even I am allowed to fall......."

tynan88 08-15-2005 06:47 AM

Hmmm its sad to think she might retire, I have never seen her perform...I have never anticipated a new album but I want her to be happy, and if retiring makes her happy so be it, but unless Stevie has changed I think she will always want to perform and create, it seems in her spirit but either way I totally respect her choice.

I'm not saying that she owes us anything. All i'm saying is that she has represented a strong shoulder to lean on through hard times in many people's lives, whether it be family, friends, or fans. And of coarse she has the right to grieve...because she just lost her father of almost 60 years! All i'm saying is that it does not mean that she will automatically leave the music business because of it. Does she have the right to if she decides to do so...yes, because no one is stopping her, and if she feels that she has done all she can do for this business, than she has the right to retire and live her life as she pleases. Do i want her to retire...no, but if she feels that it is time to, i totally respect that, because it is her life, and she is in charge of it.

HejiraNYC 08-15-2005 08:31 AM

Wait a minute... what's up with all of this talk about retirement and packing it in, etc.? There was that ONE interview she gave where the interviewier added his own spin about the future of her recording career. But what about all of those other interviews earlier in the tour where Stevie was quoted as being in a really great place in her life and that she was excited about the future and that she had a lot of good years left in her, and that she would be doing this until she has to be wheeled onstage? What about the "Rhiannon" project? What about the Australian orchestral tour? It just doesn't make any sense to me why everybody thinks this is the end of the end .

As for the death of her father, it has definitely been a profoundly horrible loss for the family. But it seems like it was a while coming. And even though many may feel that Stevie is fragile and lives in a fantasy world, even she is "real" enough to understand death and mortality. And she, just like most everyone else in the world, realizes that losing a parent is just one of those inevitable aspects of life. It happens. It's terribly sad, but it's not tragic. And she can take comfort in knowing that Jess left the world knowing that his daughter had turned her life around and was going to be okay after all. It doesn't stop her for her. If anything, I think she will be inspired anew to sing new songs about her father to new audiences.

If I were Stevie, the last thing I'd want my fans doing is speculating on how I'm going to funnel my grief and making predictions on whether I'll do a new album or retire.

I think the only thing to do is offer condolences, make a donation to AHI if possible, and then chill out and let the woman grieve. This talk is disrespectful, whether she is aware of conversations here or not.

Not to mention, I don't think she's the type of performer to retire without a farewell tour and/or album. That just wouldn't be cool to the fans and she luvs her fans. She knows how much her fans luv her. MHO.

oh come off it. chill out. Even though I'm not participating in this thread, this is ridiculous, in my opinion. There is absolutely nothing disrespectful about talking about how the death of Stevie's father may be fueling Stevie's creativity. Some of you need to decide which side of the fence you're on...one minute we're talking about Jess' death too much and then this. No one's speculating, simply talking about what Stevie may be feeling or doing to cope. Everyone is getting their panties in a wad in every damn post these days. Sheesh.

I can see how someone MAY take some of the comments within this thread and run with them, but they've all offered clarification to show that they are not being disrespectful or not being sympathetic. What should we discuss? Maybe there should be a list of approved post topics...(this is a joke)

If you don't like the banter going on within a thread, don't participate, but I really really don't think this thread is or even hints at disrespect. My 2 cents.

no hard feelings and no reason to call the Po Po, but this one struck a nerve

I visualize her going off to Hawaii to recharge her batteries, both emotionally and physically, after things have settled down a bit in AZ and she feels as though she can leave. She seems to do that when she needs to unwind....Then i think we'll see her popping back up on the horizon after the holidays.

My money is on Stevie doing ONE more solo album, purely out of obligation to Reprise. It'll have at least one song about her father, be dedicated to him and receive lukewarm to positive reviews (although we the fans will be all "it's the best album ever OMG OMG!!!"). Then she'll be officially semi-retired, only doing live appearances at Shery Crow concerts.

AliceLover 08-15-2005 02:30 PM

I don't see Stevie doing any more solo albums. I think the Vegas, Two Voices, and Gold Dust Tour was a great way to end her solo career IMO. Some vegas shows here and there will be great, but as for another full solo tour I don't see it happening. I am pulling for a Fleetwood Mac farewell tour in hopes Christine might come back and do a few dates. ***Crosses Fingers***
