Dolly Parton
Is it just me or do Dolly Parton's beautiful soft love songs nearly bring anyone else tears? She has such a beautiful sad quiver in her voice. I'm listening to "But You Know that I Love You" right now. Sigh...

I wish I could swing seeing her on her tour! She's playing Toronto. I'd love to see her. Vegas would be great! But I can't do it. I have to save my pennies now. Sigh... |
"ooh I love you..."
I love Dolly. Heartbreaker and Here You Come Again always get me. If any of you get a chance to see or hear the Crossroads special with Dolly and Melissa Ethridge, I highly recommend it. Dolly tears up Bring Me Some Water. |

OMG - LOVE LOVE LOVE Dolly -have since I was six - so though I say the Beatles are my first love - I should probably say that she actually is. In like 1986 I saw Smoky Mountain Christmas and that was it - I've loved her ever since
|
My Mom used to go to the same church as Dolly before she was famous. They weren't close friends, just acquaintances. But I remember growing up in Knoxville, TN, seeing her commercials for grocery stores (her first benefactor), and the first Dolly variety show on Saturday afternoons.
I've also been to Dollywood, and if you haven't been - GO!!!! The song that always gets me is on the Dolly in London show ... oh crap ... pothole ... something like "Down From Dover"? AND, I just got the new Scissor Sisters DVD, and they play "Baby I'm Burnin' " to warm up the crowd. And you've never seen queens freak out like that British crowd does dancing to some Dolly disco... |
(singing loudly)
TWO DOORS DOWN They're laughing and drinkin And having a parrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrty... Sorry - I know this is the "sad Dolly song" thread, but I needed a pick-me-up after today's sad news... :D |

"Gonna creep on in..." And my best friend recently found an old bootleg of Dolly singing "Harper Valley PTA" that's a HOOT. |

I have this movie on VHS, and her Christmas special too...I watch em every year ! |

The Harper Valley PTA thing sounds like a riot. |
Dolly is great! I have her "Trio" cds... also a couple of solo cds. I've never seen her in concert but would LOVE to someday.

I bought a boot DVD of it on Ebay last year - and I too watch it EVERY year - my friend Kari and I though? We used to watch it LITERALLY every day lol. So now I watch it and can talk along  "You know very well who...the one whose very life's breath makes me rage with angah...whose eyes I pluck out....whose eyes I would tear assunder..." I LOVE Jezzabel. |
Dolly is THE DIRT!
Her autobiography was a blast to read and she seems like SUCH a darling person...I would just love to sit and chat with her for hours. I told my BF that we should go to Dollywood next year...I think it would be a blast! If her tour stops in Texas, I am there... rbs |

LOVE Dolly!
Grew up listening to her and love her lots. She's my favorite female country singer. My favorite song is Here You Come Again. It's very eerie how similar she and Stevie are.

Love Dolly. Used to watch her old variety show with my mom. Her last few bluegrass albums have been really amazing, amongst the best records she's ever put out. The fact that she comes across as such a warm and gentle soul also makes her so insanely lovable.
And Smokey Mountain Christmas? I watch it every year. Love love love it. |

She used to have a Q&A bit with the audience and she always came across as really witty and lovely. |
One of my all-time favorite country duets EVER is the Porter Wagoner/Dolly Parton duet "Just Someone I Used To Know." It's quite possibly the perfect song.

I've never seen any of those on video anywhere... |
She's great. I'll never forget that to hear her voice singing I will always love you gave me 1 minute and a half of bliss in the middle of the utter torture that was watching The Bodyguard.

Chills...
I was flipping channels one night and came across some biography on her or something. Anyways, they played a performance on some awards show of her singing "He's Alive"....when the song was over, I was in tears. AMAZING performance, I got chills and tears just sitting here typing this.
My mom and I used to watch her show in the 90's...Dolly. :) |

And Smoky Mtn Christmas is a staple for me. Watch it every year. Islands in the Stream is the first song I ever remember hearing. My dad used to sing it to me when I was little and it's the first song I ever sang. |
Right...that's the thing...

Add me to the "I love Smokey Mountain Christmas and Hard Candy Christmas" list! |

Did you see her sing "Hello God" live. I though I would die from crying when I saw her on Leno, Letterman, or some other such show. She is the trashiest class act I have ever seen  |
I had a thought - it would great to have Ledgie conclave at DollyWood - if for nothing else than to see Dissention's 24/7 horrified facial expression at the decor  I may pay his way just to see his reaction to the bedspread in the hotel

Hello God..
No, I've never even heard of that song! If that's from her newer albums, I don't have those. :( Actually, I don't have ANY of her albums, my dad's got a few LPs and I've downloaded her songs from iTunes and stuff. One of these days, I'll get all her stuff. :)
I would love to go to Dollywood at least once, but I don't do rides folks...I get sick. Blergh. |

Hello God was from "Halos and Horns" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...music&n=507846 - which also contains the FAB. version of Sairway to Heaven. |
I got to meet Dolly when I was a kid. She told me I had the prettiest red hair and was so sweet to me. I still have the autograph she gave me that day. My parents were big country music fans so I grew up listening to her, and Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash, etc. What an amazing voice and an amazing woman!
Anyway, another neat thing about Dolly that a lot of people might not know is that in addition to Dollywood, she also owns these Dixie Stampede . . . well, I can't really describe what they are, but I guess dinner theater with horses is about as close as I can come to it. They are in Myrtle Beach SC, Orlando, FL, Pigeon Forge, TN, and in Bronson Missouri. In the areas where she has these themeparks and the Dixie Stampedes, her non-profit organization, the Imagination Library gives out free books (1 per month) to children ages 0 to 5 years old. How's that for a great public service? There are no income limits or anything-you just sign your kid up, and once a month, they receive a free, age-appropriate book. What a terrific way to give back to the community and foster the love of reading! |
