What a handsome man he was. Very sad.

I was taken aback a bit with her asking her father to wait until her tours were complete. I find that a little egocentric! Hmmm...

DeeGeMe 08-12-2005 01:03 PM

Trust me, when your parents and other loved-ones get older, you start using any means necessary to keep them around longer. You hold out graduations and births and birthdays and all sorts of things they have to yet see as an incentive to try and get them to hold out and hold on for a little longer.

Sad confirmation of this already sad news.

Tears were streaming down my face before I even began to read her entry...I am so glad we have heard from her and that she has chosen to give us a sign that she is ok. This means so much to me, Stevie. I love you...

Regarding asking her father to wait until the tours were complete - Please try to understand what she was saying. Jess was a man with an incredible work ethic. If you've ever heard stories of when Stevie was sick and did not want to perform and he basically said to her "Stevie, these people are here to see you so get out there and do your job" and she did. He WANTED to hold on until the end of the tour for her so she was supporting his wishes and continuing for him. Being the selfless man that he was he did not want the tours to stop on his behalf which they most likely would have if he passed. Stevie said that to honor her father, not to be selfish because that is what he would have wanted.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be another "Stevie is an egomaniac" thread :(.

DrummerDeanna 08-12-2005 01:16 PM

Oh wow...

I totally didn't expect her to post anything so soon - let alone at all!!! She is such a kick ass lady! Still -she must be feeling so much pain - their whole family is, I'm sure...but I think it's great that she got to be with him in his last days.

I think the fact that she posted about this so soon shows how strong of a person she is... and also, how she cares for her fans... she didnt have to do that.. she didnt have to say anything about it... as many have pointed out, it's her personal family business.. the fact that she would write a note to us, her fans, is frankly, pretty big of her... shows how much she cares.

skcin 08-12-2005 01:19 PM

Wow - how can this woman write a few words & give me chills. So sad.

Dear Friends~

My father died today at 3:06pm. He was a force of nature. He waited until the Fleetwood Mac Tour was over~ I asked him for that. He waited until this summer tour was over~ I asked him for that. He couldn’t leave us during a tour~ he knew that. The last show was Saturday in Vegas. I got here to Phoenix Sunday night. It is Wednesday night. He waited for me.

So now I can cry
I can go to his ocean house with him
His dream house on the water
The porch that he loved
And wanted to build here
A place to watch the sunset
And have a little vodka
A couch to take a nap on
While he watched the sun go down

He did it all, this man of character. He rocked big companies in big business, and he rocked big bands at his venue at Compton Terrace. He was a major player in both realms.

In my father’s painting
The house by the sea
In the dream house
By the water
Go my father and me

Totally Agree! Anyone who has lost a parent or a loved one would understand where Stevie was coming from in her note. I don't know how she gathered the strength to write at this very trying time. God Bless you and your family Stevie. Your sadness will turn to happy memories of the times you and your Dad spent together. "If your lost and look you will find me...time after time"!

Rest in Peace Jess.

If there is one thing in life I've learned, it is never judge someone who is grieving.

The "contract" between Stevie and her father about when he should let go is a very personal one between two people who loved each other deeply. Of course she was not saying don't die because I have to work, and we all know that if he died during the summer tour, she would have cancelled it.

It was a spiritual arrangement between the two of them based on things we will never know.

Stevie was totally devoted to that man. This is a really sad time for her and while I'm always on the side of free speech, I strongly caution against judging her. Just love and support her unconditionally--isn't that what we all want when we are so vulnerable and in such pain?

I haven't been through what she's going through but I can imagine that she felt she needed him as long as she could have him. I can imagine silently saying Please stay with me through this and then Please stay with me through this, too. I think that I would be the same way. :(

I think that's a wonderful tribute she has on the site. It's very unique how public her private life is. I think it can be an invasion in some cases but in others I think it can be a blessing. It's just a belief I have that if a person and a family are going through such an awful time and there is an outpouring of love, support, and well wishes from many, many people, even if they are strangers, that genuine love can reach them in some way and they won't be alone.

ELIUD 08-12-2005 01:27 PM

Any fan who had followed her career for a good number of years (at least from her solo years) would know that Stevie is EXTREMELY close to her small family: one brother, a mom and a dad (and of course now Lori and Jesse). And that losing any of them would be a shattering experience for her. I also believe that when people are ill or know they are about to die, the will to continue can prolong their lives until they are ready to let go. It has nothing to do with her ego but his love for her daughter and what she does.

I found her note especially the last part of the poem to be absolutely moving and heartbreaking.

SapphireSister 08-12-2005 01:28 PM

I wonder what ocean house she is talking about. Last time I checked there was no ocean in AZ. Is this just a metaphor? It sounds like it was a very special place to him.

Patti 08-12-2005 01:30 PM

I am very touched by Stevie's letter and I'm sure it helped her as well, knowing there are many, many people who care about her and her family. My thoughts are with the Nicks family.

eclipse 08-12-2005 01:30 PM

That's our Girl!!

I found the note to be sad but peaceful. It is the acceptance that I was hoping I would feel in her tone. That's our Girl!
I am proud of her for addressing his death so quickly and sweetly.

I think she knew he was leaving....and asked him not to go until...., until..., until....,
and now everything is done-
There is quiet in Stevie's life....
and he chooses this time, as the right time to leave.

In reading her poem about his house by the sea, I felt a sense of acceptance in her words. I know Stevie will be strong and she will be fine. There will be tears, and a lonely place in her heart, for some time.
However, I think she knew he was ready to leave and was waiting for it to be OK with her.....

Might sound crazy, but I lost my Dad in the same way. When I was strong enough to handle him being gone...that is when he left. I think Jess and Stevie have that same bond. Bless them both!!

And again I will share my belief : As long as someone lives in your heart and in your mind...they are never really gone.

My wishes are for Stevie's strength, and also for many wonderful, joyous and happy memories of "her Daddy"...... always.....

~~dreams,
eclipse~~

No, no! That isn't my intention at all. I just felt that when I read it and after reading other people's comments (including yours :xoxo: ) I understand her perspective better. Her father was truly a selfless man. No question. That comment was in no way intended to start anything!

This is so sad about Stevie's dad. I think her posting that letter right away is like when someone die's close to you, the first thing you have to do is phone everyone and let them know. I know when my mom passed away this past January, after we got over the initial shock, the first thing you do when you get home is start making phone calls, at least that's what my family did. I guess Stevie feel's close to her fan's and wanted us to hear it from her.

My dad is still having a very difficult time over the loss of his wife and I am going to give him an extra hug this weekend for you Stevie. He turn's 79 this Saturaday.

God bless you Stevie~may the word's of your own music help you through this difficult time.

Eclipse... That was beautiful. I didn't know Stevie's father personally but this makes me so extremely sad. Stevie's beautiful and sad writings on the Nicksfx and also your post have brought me to tears. My prayers are with the Nicks family.

Beachwood Mac 08-12-2005 01:56 PM

I wasn't sure I wanted to post to the thread about the loss of Stevie's dad. But after reading Stevie's letter on nicksfix I decided to add a few words.

It is no wonder that every article refers to Stevie's fans as devoted. How many other celebrities would take the time in their sorrow to let their fans know their father had passed away. Her short note in all its eloquence is the reason we are devoted to Stevie. She cares deeply for her fans as we were her own family. When friends tell me they don't get the fascination with Stevie Nicks my only reply is "If you don't get it, I can't explain it to you."

For Jess, God Bless You and thank you for giving us Stevie.

Ghost_Tracker 08-12-2005 02:06 PM

". . . .COURAGE."

I would have been like,

". . . . . fans? . .. .. what . . . . ? post something on the . . . .

need to . . . need to call someo- . . . . need . . . what are fans???

what are you TALKING ab- . . . why is it so dark in here? . . .

did somebody say something about fans? Why, it isn't hot?

What are you . . . talking about what . . . what are FANS? ..."

What strength and dignity in her letter,

and how kind of her to post it to Nicksfix so soon.

Such genuine - GENUINE - consideration for her fans

and yes, selflessness and consideration for others.

And - if you read between her lines -

such leadership

She listened well.

I hope he realized that.

This is why they're a noble family.

The Princess is now a Queen.

And don't forget -

clearly, she has his strength.

AliP 08-12-2005 02:13 PM

Although, it doesn't make it easier, I think she was prepared for his death. He was unwell for a long time. Sadly, many people over the age of 65 who break bones like that and are not in good health rarely recover. God bless. She truly is a strong woman.

eclipse 08-12-2005 02:33 PM

Thank You for listening/reading my thoughts

My thanks go out to everyone that has commented on my post, it was a difficult one for me to write too.
If it has given you comfort I am glad that I am here to do that for you.
Please don't cry. I don't feel that it is the expression of emotion that Jess would want you to be feeling, nor would Stevie.

So please don't cry , try and be like me...
Be Irish and Be a witch (well, maybe everyone can't do that...)and Be crazy, and Be Happy that you were are part of someones life...
Have a whiskey and celebrate one life passing you by, whoever's life that may be. A Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Child, Dog, Cat, it all counts and it all feels the same. Loss is loss. But remembering joyful times brings such a sense of peace and calm, and love to your heart, please try and you will find the sadness and tears.....dry.

It is amazing that a woman (whom none of us know,) can bring so many people from all different walks/talks of life together and allow us to share/feel such deep emotions. We do love this Stevie...don't we.

Wishing you all peacefilled dreams~~

Stevie's letter is beautiful. She is a person who has always sought solace by writing, and by sharing her words with others. She is grieving, and probably knows that her fans today are feeling for her in her time of loss. And I tihnk this is her way of saying thank you.

We did not need to know Jess personally to recognize what a force he was in her life. Many fans have been touched by her music, have turned to her music in our time of sadness. How could we not feel for her in her time of loss?

He has his good days and bad days of course. I think he tries and puts on a brave front for us when we're there, but he is sooooo lonely. When my mother was cremated, my father asked for me to pick up her urn from the funeral parlor's for burial in the spring, but now he has asked me to keep them until his death so that their ashes can be buried together. I don't know what to think of that, I hate when he talks about his own death but at the same time it is a beautiful sentiment. I truly believe that he knows that he would not be able to handle the burial of my mother's ashes so maybe this is why he has requested this. I respect whatever his wishes are. My sister's and I take turn's going up on the weekends which help but it's still very hard.

I'll probably get backlash for saying this but I believe that it may be easier for a woman to lose her husband then for a man to lose his wife first. The reason being that with the older generation the man is dependent on his wife for so many things in everyday life. The cooking, the shopping, the cleaning, laundry, ironing, the bill paying and just the warmth of making a home a home. This is just my observation from what I have seen in my life. :wavey:

Nixxxed 08-12-2005 03:09 PM

In some ways he was a celebrity too. Millions have seen him introducing his daughter at very prominent shows - most notably the HBO White-Winged Dove special and the US Festival broadcast. Not to mention his business dealings and charitable work.

In fact, I remember making Stevie mix-tapes (a long time ago), and starting the tape off with: "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome ... my daughter ... Stevie Nicks!!!"

Stevie's strong family bond is a big part of her success, and I've always appreciated that she let us get to know them a little, too.

No backlash here. In my experience (in my own family) this has been true.

Stevie is really lucky that she had a great dad, and that she got to spend almost 60 years with him. It's sad that he died, but I'm sure he was very happy and he got to see all that is Stevie. He must have been very proud of her.

Good-bye, Jess- you had a long, happy and fulfilling life- what else could one ask for?

I am sad for you - in the end, we become the parent - in a way, that is a nice thing, yet horrifying when we are alone. I am standing somewhat on the edge of it; and that terrifies me as I am the strong one whose shoulders never bend. So :xoxo: to you my friend.

And - I agree. If my 79 year old mother goes before my younger dad, he will be lost and most likely drink himself to death out of despair, which would be horrible.

Anyway, Stevie is truly great for posting this. I think she knew somehow that many fans care about him, his family, and her. What a woman to share this "darkest hour" with us when most want only family and close friends around.

Though the letter was heavy, I kind of chuckled at the vodka part, because I am in New Orleans and was having a little vodka when I read that - as if on cue  Also, wouldn't it be great if we had her talent and could send her our music to help her - a fitting return for the gifts she gave and gives us in her music. Sadly, all I have is the Vegas Kareoke - which I somehow think she would both be horrified and amused by

RIP Mr. Nicks - you were one of the nicest people I have ever met.
