One year ago today...

Tracy went on vacation and Burnish.net shut down. Does anybody know if this site, since it's still up, will ever become active again? Wha' happened?

GateandGarden 08-11-2005 11:16 AM

I'm wondering that myself.

GypsySorcerer 08-11-2005 11:16 AM

I was thinking about that the other day. I miss the site. I hope Tracy is well.

trackaghost 08-11-2005 11:18 AM

Yeah, I looked on it the other day and its now like a little ghost town.
So sad. Tracy used to be the first with TV clips and stuff like that, the night after they were shown.

ELIUD 08-11-2005 11:20 AM

It's still a good source for things like lyrics and discographies, videographies and such but doesn't it cost money to keep a site up like that? Why would she keep it running but abandon it?

trackaghost 08-11-2005 11:23 AM

I think it's the only site with descriptions of all the videos.
It is odd she keeps it up without updating but maybe she feels she put so much work into it, it would be a shame to take it down. Like you said it's still a great source for Mac info.

skcin 08-11-2005 11:29 AM

I thought I was the only one who still checked to see if Burnish was back up & running. :(

I miss Burnish. But I understand where she was coming from. My lil' old site went down & I just have not had the time, energy or patience to get it back up & running again. I don't blame her, esp. with the message board headaches she had to deal with.

Didn't some people run into Tracy at some of last year's shows?

Apparently, she's fine, but the childishness must have really burnt her out on the whole Internet participation scene.

Probably like what happened to Marty!!

ELIUD 08-11-2005 11:41 AM

Who's Marty?

Ali 08-11-2005 11:42 AM

I know some stuff went down on Burnish but doesn't anyone else think her reaction was a bit extreme?

IMO life is too short to spend time and energy on stuff that aggravates you.

I'm glad it's still there as a resource, though; great stuff there.

Marty is the one that made/runs/pays for this site LOL.

He still looks at it from time to time, and kind of likes to update the discography, but otherwise is very busy w/ 'real life' work stuff to get too involved in the message board stuff. I'm the Mac fan; (he's the computer geek!) :D

You wish to hold a poll on someone's feelings? Hey, her life, her choice. There will be an answer, let it be. :sorry:

Not extreme, per se, just the wrong extreme reaction.

Had I been Tracy, I'd have kick/booted & banned anyone who pissed me off, & been done with it in a matter of minutes, rather than let anyone raise my BP.

But site owners seem reluctant to do that nowadays, maybe for fear of being thought fascists. But site ownership is property ownership, & who in his right mind would let others throw eggs at his property? If ornery people shave their scurf all over your site, why tolerate it in the name of some sort of vague, shifting, not-really-relevant idea of being "fair" or "just"?

Running a site should be like child-rearing: at the very first sign of misbehavior, you calmly grab the child & march him outside the restaurant to let him throw his little tantrum there instead of bothering the other diners. You don't -- as so many poor parents do -- just keep sitting there, letting the child's meltdown build & build until you have both made a scene.

I, too, check Burnish and checked it about three days ago. I thought of leaving a message in the guestbook but it's totally filled with Spam. Those familiar with Tracy will notice she DID recently update her trade page. That left me hopeful that we might see the return of Burnish soon, but who knows. It was certainly the best site for getting clips almost as they happened, plus her commentary was always fun to read.

I'm not trying to poll about someone's feelings. I was just expressing my personal feeling that what she did seemed a bit too drastic to me. That's all.

sodascouts 08-11-2005 10:19 PM

I understand shutting down the board but I always figured that eventually, she'd return to the site. Looks like now that's never going to happen (although I am surprised to hear about the trade site. Tracy is still trading?)

GateandGarden 08-11-2005 10:25 PM

I'm still waiting for the day that someone tells me what the Burnish stuff is all about, since I've been hearing references to "all that stuff that happened at Burnish" and "that mess at Burnish" for a long time now. But, I suppose I can guess, based on things that go on here sometimes.

macfanken 08-11-2005 10:28 PM

Yeah... I miss Tracy. :distress:

strandinthewind 08-11-2005 10:34 PM

Tracy's board was a lot of fun. People were racey and it was fun. But, then some people thought they were being ribald - when many took offense. Many complained to Tracy and when Tracy acted, she was accused of taking sides. I was not part of that so I do not if those accusations were true. After awhile, she shut down the site.

For the record, I like Tracy and enjoyed seeing her at concerts. I also liked her board and enjoyed the people there.

GateandGarden 08-11-2005 10:43 PM

Thanks for the info, Jason.

Eliud! I remember you vaguely from the Burnish days. Your avatar had a cartoon of you at the computer :)

Actually it's all still there if you really want the inside scoop (but only read it if you must know since it's sort of like drudging up some bad toxic waste). Go to the forum and change the display options to show threads from "the beginning" almost every topic had something negative happen to it by the end.

trackaghost 08-12-2005 04:36 AM

I never understood why people took offense to Tracy telling them to tone it down (there could be some incredibly mean posts). It was her site afterall, she paid for it, what she says goes.
At the end Hillary it was chaos with fights going on left, right and centre... but I think she had had enough way before that.
I do miss Burnish though. She used to update it every day.

tynan88 08-12-2005 04:47 AM

It is a shame when online arguments get so serious that that can happen.
I heard some pretty nasty things were said about people at Burnish, and it nearly even got brought over here if I remember last time this was brought up.

btw Trackaghost I love your new sig nearly as much as your last

I might go over there and do that. Thanks for the tip.

Basically everyone factioned off and all the groups went to war against each other. Tracy sort of took sides, the other groups didn't like it and the board basically imploded.

Hey Joe! I remember you too. You and Lux were really good friends on Burnish and went to see Fleetwood Mac in Australia. You both got backstage and had the experience of lifetime schmoozing with the band. And you pretty much are single-handedly responsible for getting "I Know I'm Not Wrong" on the set list for the second leg of the tour. I was wondering what happened to you.

From what I remember, a lot of what Tracy was worried about had to do with "kids" being on the board and getting piled on by more seasoned posters. She was afraid of people's feelings getting hurt and I guess leaving the board. I can understand that if you start a forum/website you're really proud of - you might not want it to get dominated by angry fighting...but I think she got a little too motherly about protecting people's feelings.

When she closed the board I remember there were so many interesting and stimulating discussions about a wide range of topics that evolved freely. So what if they got a little heated?

I think they were just a part of the problem. As are a few people who at least were on this board and shall not be named.
