"No Questions Asked" or "Paper Doll"

At the Rumours era section, I learned that these two songs were both made and considered for use on 1988's Greatest Hits. Was the right decision made? Which one would you have chosen to use?

Neal 08-10-2005 12:01 PM

Definitely 'No Questions Asked'

strandinthewind 08-10-2005 12:03 PM

Well, neither - but the alt. version of NQA that starts with her singing "No questions asked" is FAR superior to the sonic nightmare on the released one - so, I pick the alt. version of NQA

LiquidBlue5000 08-10-2005 12:34 PM

i looooooooove "No Questions Asked".. one of my favorites

Dreammms 08-10-2005 12:42 PM

No Questions Asked is soooooo much better. Paper Doll doesn't come close!

The Tower 08-10-2005 12:49 PM

"Paper Doll" blows chunks. "No Questions Asked" is a top 20 for me. I love that song- it rocks.

GypsySorcerer 08-10-2005 12:52 PM

"No Questions Asked," hands down.

dudden22 08-10-2005 12:58 PM

I don't like either! Especially when they are placed next to songs like Rhiannon and Gypsy. If it comes down to a choice between two crappy songs for a greatest hits album, they should have gone with neither.

UndoingTheLaces 08-10-2005 03:44 PM

I like them both. Did anyone else notice that the music in NQA starts off kind of wrong? The Keyboard/bell ring is off on the very first note.

ontheEdgeof17 08-10-2005 03:48 PM

I went with NQA, although I love them both. It fits the Greatest Hits album more...it has that feel of a hit, while Paper Doll is a great opener for the boxset.

I think Paper Doll is poignant and it has a cool beat to beat. I think it is almost alternative sounding with itsw Cajun/Zydeco esq beat.

Well, one night I was playing Stevie for some drag queens in my car and this song came on. They all said it was the perfect drag number cuz of the beat and Cajun sound.

For the record and for the casual observer - I was NOT one the drag queens in Curtis' car  But, I am from Lafayette, Louisiana, the home of Cajun music

Yeah...this was 3-4 years ago...before your coming out party. ;)

SapphireSister 08-10-2005 04:40 PM

They both suck big time. The only good thing about them is that they are Stevie Nicks songs. Other than that they blow, so neither.

sparky 08-10-2005 04:42 PM

Sheesh. I guess NQA, just because the alternate is a little better. I think both of these songs should be collecting dust in the demo bin. Paper Doll is kind of funky, but the vocal is pretty darned croaky. NQA is fatally infected with the "well" virus and has one of the clunkiest lyrics ever. After the one two punch of these new songs back then, I really started to wonder if Homegirl's well had run dry for good.

   :xoxo:

What's the clunky lyric you speak of?

David 08-10-2005 04:53 PM

Since Paper Doll is one of my all-time favorite songs, I'd have to say ... PAPER DOLL!

It also features some of the best arrangement & production Lindsey B. has ever done.

Surely you jest.

Oooh she just seems to be missing
How could that happen anyhow

Cringeasaurus.

You feel completely indifferent

Sounds like she's chewing a mouthful of pizza dough when singing this one.

So today she says well I've changed my mind
That's a womans right they say
Well I'm frightened and I'm lost and i
Can't give you up, not now I need you now
I'm broken-hearted, broke down
Like a little girl
Well I need you now, well I'm broken hearted
Well I broke down, like a little girl

Ugh. Ugh. Save me from this.

Maybe clunky isn't the right word. Maybe just...painful ?

Those are stinkers, for sure. But I do love the "civil/nice" bit. :p

Serrart 08-10-2005 05:08 PM

I quite like Paper Doll, but prefer No Question Asked, especially in the BTM demos.

Romy

dissention 08-10-2005 07:12 PM

Paper Doll. It's a stupid little ditty, but "No Questions Asked" is a musical atrocity, so I pick the other choice.

Further proof that Homegirl won't be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame...ever.

And don't forget the opening verse.

When I see him --
I feel him.
There's an intenseness
In him --
In his eyes.

Jesus Christ, kill me now. The way she sings "intenseness" is horrific.

AliceLover 08-10-2005 07:28 PM

I put paper doll because it was one of the very first Stevie songs ive ever heard. Overall I think NQA is a better song, but for some reason I like Paper Doll better. I love the harmonies on it.

Yes, I have noticed something like that. Something doesn't sound right to my ears, but still...

I went with "No Questions Asked." That's one of my favorite FM songs of all time. I love it in all forms, demo or officially released. I love "Paper Doll," too, but not as much.

"No Questions Asked" is dreamarrific!! I love the lyrics and love the music and love the vocal and love Mick's drumming.

And, by the way Joshua, I love the way she sings "intenseness". So stick it.

I wasn't specific the first time because I didn't know what to say. I don't know enough about music to really explain it. Plus, I could be totally wrong.

Paper Doll

I don't like the production on No Questions Asked. I've never heard any alternative or demo versions. Paper doll is unique and upbeat.

I do have it. I like being able to hear the vocals better, but I'm so used to the released product that I'm not all ga-ga one way or the other.

You know what sucks? I blew the joke... I was supposed to say, "Your taste is all in your mouth", which is a lift from that classic Lucy episode "Ethel's Birthday" where Fred thinks his gift idea of a toaster sucks, so he asks Lucy to buy a gift for him, and she ends up getting Ethel a pair of harlequin satin pedal pushers. Ethel is aghast and proceeds to slam Fred for selecting someone to buy a gift in his place that has such poor taste (which is all in their mouth). Lucy tries to convince Ethel that they are "hostess pants" which one wears to "smart dinner parties". Ethel's response- "Oh, I was wondering what I was gonna wear to all those smart dinner parties I throw..." Then Lucy suggests that Ethel compliment her hostess pants by getting an off-the-shoulder blouse, a big crushy belt and some ballerina slippers so she'd be all set. Ethel proclaims she would have rather had the toaster. After much sniping, Lucy exits the scene stating, "Happy Birthday, I hope you live another 75 years" and slams the door.

By the by, I use that "hope you live another 75" line allllll the time with women at my job whenever they haul out the obligatory insincere employee birthday card routine.

So, I failed. However, "No Questions Asked" is still a pretty good number.

Don't Care For Either One

I think these are both weak songs compared to the bulk of Stevie's outstanding work.

Hawkeye 08-10-2005 10:10 PM

Easily No Questions Asked. I really love that song. Paper Doll is one of her all time worst.

BlackWidow 08-10-2005 10:11 PM

love em both
