Like or Dislike: Talk To Me

I don't care if she didn't write it, I love this song! The music is perfect - esp. the tempo: not slow & dragging, but not too hard & fast either. But that drum at the beginning scares the crap out of me every time if I have the stereo up too loud.

The lyrics? There's not a single line that I don't like. Not a one. I really dig the following:

"though we lay, face to face and cheek to cheek,
our voices stray, from the common grounds where they can meet,
the walls run high, to veil a swelling tear,
let the walls burn down, set your secrets free,
you can break their bounds, cause you're safe with me, you can lose your doubt, cause you'll find no danger, not here!"

Stevie delivers one of her best vocal performances here, IMO. Her range & control is amazing. My karaoke-like performance (for myself) whenever I hear this tune is ridiculous.

The video - ah, yes, the video. This video rocks. My only complaint is that there aren't enough close-ups - most shots are so far away you can't see her facial expression at all. Not the "closeups" themselves, obviously - I mean when she's busting those badass moves in the big white room. Speaking of those moves - teeheehee :o . Guilty pleasure to the max. I have done their little silly line dance in my living room many times. Love it. Much better than the marching in the I Can't Wait vid.

Live? It was good on the RAL tour, but I think it was phenomenal on the Street Angel tour. "we both know, there's somethin' HAPPENIN' HERE, OOOO YEAH!" I admit I was extremely disappointed that she did not do this in Vegas, or during the rest of the tour. Maybe some day...

face of glass 08-09-2005 12:26 PM

A powerhouse of a vocal on the original RAL version, a well-written song with an addictive refrain and funny tympani (sp?) in the arrangement, what's not to like? Please Stevie, bring this back to your live set. :D

AliceLover 08-09-2005 12:28 PM

This song on the album is amazing. I can listen to it over and over and not get sick of the album version. I like:

"Is it all that hard, is really all that tough, well I can show you all my cards, but isn't that enough, you can have your hurts, but its something you can't do"

I did not like the RAL tour version at all. If I was a casual fan that got on to Stevie by listening to TTM on the radio, then decided to go to a RAL concert I would be severely dissappointed. On the other hand, the Street Angel performances were incredible.

I ****ing love this song.

This is the best part-

Then the anticipation.... and then she lets loose, baby!

I LOVE TTM - I think it is one of her best vocals ever and summarizes that ewra of her career perfectly

You? Have NO idea..... :p

I just remembered something - this song was one of my worst "I don't know the words, so I'll make some up" songs when I was younger & heard it on the radio.

"Bunch of words, lying under carpets, say to her why must you keep your key here..."

"is it all that hard, is it all that tough, well I say oh my God, well isn't that enough..."

"well, I can see you baby, well I can see you baby..." OK, this one is not that bad. I know it says "running" but I still hear "baby."

I also had no clue about the "wound" line, but damned if I remember what I thought it was.

Serrart 08-09-2005 01:40 PM

I love the song, both live and on the album and the video too.

I used to love this song - however I seem to have grown weary of it as of late. I still never skip it- and I do love the part..

"Was it all that hard...was it all that tough..I've shown you all my cars - isn't that enough"

But yeah - it's ok.

GateandGarden 08-09-2005 01:51 PM

I LOVE this song--any version of it. I love all the alternate versions I've heard with the slightly different vocals and music. I love the lyrics and her passionate performance. I think it's my favorite song by Stevie and not written by Stevie next to "Every Day." It's one of my fave Stevie songs, and easily in my top ten favorites of her solo songs.

Good God how many cars does she have?:laugh: J/K! :wavey:

amber 08-09-2005 01:53 PM

This song is incredibly hard not to sing. Especially the part you quoted. Actually, it's impossible not to sing it. I've tried. Can't be done.

Same here. I can't have it playing and not sing along with it. It calls to me. Well, not just me but other people too. :o

I guess I'm the only naysayer. I don't like it. :sorry: The helium voice does me in.

It's OK, don't apologize. You'll find no danger. Not here. :D

I LOVE Talk To Me. Great to sing to. Her vocals are amazing. Would love for her to do it live.

I need to go listen to it now.

SapphireSister 08-09-2005 05:14 PM

I never liked TTM, not even when it was popular on the radio. Now I don't hate it because there is not 1 song on RAL I hate but it's only one step above that. I find the lyrics to be extremely annoying (though we lay face to face and cheek to cheek" PULEEEEEASE) and I'm the queen of cheese and could not picture Stevie saying half the things she says in this song. The line I cannot stand the most is "A wound gets worse when it's treated with neglect". I always picture an open sore oozing with puss or something it's just totally gross. Don't like the music one bit.

Now the good part - the vocal performance on the album is stunning and I love her voice when she says "to veil a swelling tear". Classic RAL Stevie! It also happens to be one of my favorite videos. It's so cute to see her actually doing a little dance routine. I wish we could see more of that and she looks so freakin gorgeous I could die. I also like the live versions, both RAL and SA. I wish some other songs that she actually wrote had been released instead of this one although it was a huge hit for her. I Can't Wait was enough.

I'm just so-so about it. I think the other Waite song -- Missing You -- is vastly superior & cooler. I wish Stevie had been given THAT one to do.

Which reminds me of the review -- I think it was in Cream -- of "Talk to Me" . . . does anyone remember? The critic said something about how the most amazing drum track was recorded . . . & for what? a crappy Stevie Nicks song! He also said something funny about the "swelling tear" phrase where she sort of does a Hitchcockian simultaneous pullback & tracking shot, & sort of throws up in her throat.

Please could someone dig up that review? I'd love to read it again.

You & I, we like all the same songs on Rock a Little, & we dislike the same ones, too. WEIRD!!

i thought she looked super hot in the video, i loved the straight, two-toned hair & the part where she is dancing w/ what looks to be giant peppermint candies  ~

ontheEdgeof17 08-09-2005 06:02 PM

Hrm. What can I say that hasn't been said?

I just want to add that this song is NOTHING without the sax. Any Stevie song with a sexy sax is out of this world amazing.

Best Version: HOB '94....with the extra "ew ew's" in the middle, in battle with the sax.

I used to love this song, but I think I wore it out..haha

ZZZzzzzZZZzzzZZZzzzzZZZzzzZZZzzzzZZZzzzZZZzzzzZZZzzz...

Dullsville. Really, really weak. The only thing that saves it from being bottom of the barrel is her live version of it on the RAL tour.

Curtis the pic in your signature reminds me of that annoying Taco Bell commercial with the guy behind the counter doing that weird hand motion. You know what I'm talking about? Looks like Stevie's doing it too  .

Best song she didn't write

Great Single...Great Video...Great Live...She Should Sing It :blob1:

golden braid 08-09-2005 10:46 PM

I just going to agree with the majority here and say I love this song on the album, live, and the video. Probably my favorite version is Street Angel HOB.

TheBlueLamp 08-10-2005 03:42 AM

Love it. One of the first songs that made me aware of Stevie. Up until recently I still sang the wrong words to it though.

Yeah I remember this review. I've long since tossed the magazine but the critic also referred to her as one the most undertalented of rock's superstars and complained about her voice 'disappearing into her sinuses at the 'to veil the swelling tear ' line.

Hawkeye 08-10-2005 02:49 PM

I never cared much for Talk To Me, although the Red Rocks version is slightly better. I dont see how this crap made it to #4 while her signiture solo song Edge of 17 only made it to #11
