New Sheryl single from Wildflower
I'm still forming a definate opinion on Sheryl's new single "Good is Good' As usual it 's a solid piece of song craft and she borrows liberally from her bread and butter era of inspiration the 1970s. The intro is cool and reminiscent of Bowies All the Young Dudes as covered by Mott the Hoople .and lyrically I like it .I prefer it to Soak up the Sun which sounded too much like a commerical but not sure yet if I'd rank it up there with My Favorite Mistake or If it Makes You Happy as among her great lead off singles. It definately has an anthemic quality to it and IMO is a good harbinger for her new album Wildflower due out next month.

Whoa - I haven't heard it yet!!! OMG - I have got find it..I'm SOOO excited about this new album.
|
I'm really curious to hear it, too. I didn't care for what Sheryl did to Stevie's sings, but I've always liked her as a singer/songwriter herself. Have all her albums, seen her live. I'm looking forward to hearing new music from her.

I heard bits of it this morning and the lyrics are atrocious....
|
I have heard bits and pieces of it as well and I liked what I heard. I wanna see if the video is Stevie inspired at all. I saw her walking with a long black chiffon dress so I wonder....
I know after TISL was made Macy Gray put out a video and she played a tambourine and a stevie type shawl thing in it. Just my observations. :) |
I didn't like what I heard on the Dell commercial. Waiting to hear the whole thing in a non-commercial context. ;) And, for the record, I wasn't too impressed with whatever song she sang on Oprah back in the Spring... But again, context - not really an Oprah fan. (As Kathy Griffin says, 'She thinks she's Jesus!' )

Not a fan...

I know her music's been used in commercials before, but it was always *after* the CD had come out. And no, I didn't like it when the Mac sent Say You Will to That '70s Show or Peacekeeper to Third Watch either before the album had come out. |

I saw the premiere on VH1 yestderday and I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed. I didn't pay that much attention to the lyrics, but the production really bugged me. Sounds like it will be C'mon C'mon Part 2 which was ok, but IMO her worst album apart from a couple notable songs. I was hoping she'd make a bit of a return to her self-titled/Globe Sessions style, or take a new direction. And I thought the video was dumb... it looked like it was directed by whoever does all the VH1 commercials.

I didn't mind that one so much, tho. The album was already out, and it fit the scene so well. The Say You Will commercial, especially, sounded horrible with the stupid voiceover and canned laughter. And seeing how That '70s Show never mentioned the Mac - not even once that I'm aware of - I thought it was a bad fit. |

If I were to try to catch it, when should I watch? The only time I ever see videos on VH1 is late at night on Insomniac Music Theater. The rest of the time it's fat celebrities and crazy has-beens locked together in a house. |

I'm still excited tho. I really *do* like her. Hmmm... I think maybe I need a quick "Sweet Rosalyn" blast. To the stereo!!! |

My thoughts exactly. Sheryl, you're amazingly talented. Start showing it again! |

The beginning of the song was really quiet and in the background, but when it got to the chorus it was very prominent, especially the "Maybe now he could prove to her / That he could be good for her / That they should be together" lines... |

I was so happy when she got killed on 24 last season. |
I'm sorry, but her new single has grown on me like a fungus. That chorus is a killer and her voice sounds so lovely. The cover of the album is fantastic, too.

I love the art, but her sitting cross-legged in the middle of it kinda ruins it for me, especially since the colors don't match (meaning her skintone, outfit, etc.). She looks out of place. And, all the Stevie fan in me sees is a rip-off of the TISL promo litho. Not to mention the fact that she's basically wearing Stevie's WH Tour outfit. Yeah, I know the rest of the album-buying public won't see it this way, but being both a Stevie & Sheryl fan I can't help but notice. The song is growing on me, just cuz it's nice to have Sheryl's voice haunting my head again. But I caught part of the VH1 Top 20 Countdown last week, and her video limped onto their chart at 20. And I don't think that's *ever* happened with her lead singles. |

As for the album art... not wild about it. I love the title "Wildflower" - but it looks a little too forceably arty. |
I really like this new song...very good Sheryl!
As far as lyrics...it's not THAT bad...actually quite good... now "Soak Up The Sun", as much as I love that song...the lyrics aren't really anything to brag about... I mean the woman rhymes "on" with "on" "I got my 45 on so I can rock on" I mean COME ON SHERYL... |
