Like Or Dislike: If I Were You

Eh, it's alright. Don't love it, don't hate it. Definitely not one of my all time faves, and it falls somewhere toward the middle if I were ranking the RALalbum. I never all of a sudden get the urge to hear it but I don't skip it when I'm playing the CD either. It's a decent, peppy, ahppy tune, but not enough emotion for me.

I like the music itself, but it's nothing special. The vocal is average. I do like the way the words in the chorus flow with the music I also like these lyrics a lot:

"I know what you're dreaming when you sleep
You have secrets I will always keep
And in every morning when we arise
I see my reflection in your eyes"

I don't like these lyrics. Not sure why:

"Well, I believe that love is a living thing
Born into our destinies
From a single moment of inspiration
And as it grows it changes your life forever!"

These lyrics make me giggle & think "oh, I'll bet you can, Stevie, you dirty girl you"

"Every boy must learn to be a man
Maybe I can help you, yes I can..."

JazmenFlowers 08-05-2005 12:25 PM

I actually think this is one of the best songs on RAL, next to No Spoken Word and a couple others. I think it is such a fun song that doesn't get too serious and is great to sing along to.

AliceLover 08-05-2005 12:40 PM

Im with Paula, its alright.

ryan8472 08-05-2005 01:04 PM

I like it. The music is cool. On the Rock A Little ranking of songs, it's like number 4. :)

eclipse 08-05-2005 01:22 PM

I think I am with Paula too, Kinda wishy-washy on this one

I do like it- but it's a little too POP, " lets all sing along" for me-
I like the darker songs on Rock a Little more, like the tittle track for instance

just my little input

You dislike the one stanza in the song that Stevie actually wrote!

I agree, it's one of the highlights on Rock A Little. It's weird because I think two of the covers ("If I Were You" & "Some Become Strangers") are two of the best cuts on the album. Better songwriting when compared to the lousy material she regurgitated for it and her deliveries make them stand out; her voice is battered and raw, but she doesn't pull any of the annoying vocal ticks out of her carpet bag like she does on the title track. When she tries to be serious on the album, she falls flat on her ass, whereas on fun songs like this, she kicks ass. "If I Were You" should have been a single, imo.

yeppers. SBS is another top notch song on RAL. There's something about Stevie's voice when it sounds like it could go out at any moment that I love.

You know - I never have any intelligent or insightful things to say in these threads lol - I'm starting to feel inadequate.

I've also noticed that I'm so not picky about my Stevie music. I like this song a lot - don't love it - it's not one of my favorites - but I like to sing along to it - it's a fun little song.

StevieNicksEO17 08-05-2005 02:38 PM

Oh my goodness. If I Were You is definitely in my top three. It's been played over 100 times on my iTunes :p

Whenever I listen to it, I have to sing and dance and just go crazy. Ahhh, I cannot express how much I love it!

amber 08-05-2005 03:00 PM

It's okay. But one of my favorite things to do is - You know how you're talking to someone, and you say "if i were you, I would *blah blah blah etc*"?
I like to finish that sentence with the words in the lyric instead. In fact, I really can't help doing so.
It's a cute little song.

ShangriLaTroubl 08-05-2005 03:01 PM

There are a few Stevie songs that I cannot stand, like Sister Honey---but I have always liked this song for some reason. It's very catchy, and I just like it. Would've been a good single in my opinion...

Yes, I concur!

A stand out on RAL, for sure. GREAT vocal performance...

It's great

It's upbeat and catchy. I like it alot.

Dreammms 08-05-2005 09:35 PM

Not a favorite.

GardenStateGirlie 08-05-2005 09:42 PM

"every boy must learn to be a man -- well maybe I can help you, yes I can -- but if I were you..."

I. Love. It. Then again, i'm one of the people that find RAL to be one of her best albums (up there with WH and TISL) so perhaps I'm no go-by

Favorite part of the song? Probably the end -- her vocals on "I know just what you feel, I know just what you want. Why can't you tell me that you're feeling like I do? And I do..." I just really like what she does there. < /nerd>

Okay. I'll stop now.

That's the part of the song I really like too! The way she sings it is very cool.

golden braid 08-06-2005 12:01 AM

My usual response: I love it! I love to crank the stereo up for this one.

face of glass 08-06-2005 04:48 AM

A memorable, catchy tune, not very Nicksian perhaps, but only adds to the diversity of RAL. :)

desertangel 08-06-2005 04:54 AM

Hm. The lyrics aren't very adventurous, are they? Well, except for the boy to man thing - that is very intriguing... OoLaWee! Then it must be the DRIVING, POUNDING beat and such that I love about this song. In fact, I love it so much, I crank it too. One night I almost got kicked out of an apartment complex for driving thru the parking lot playing this song so loud it was "disturbing the peace" with the sheer volume. I ask, how can one "disturb the peace" with ANY Stevie Nicks song at any volume.
No-such-thing.

Laura

TheBlueLamp 08-07-2005 03:30 AM

This is definitely a top ten song for me. How can you not want to break into a huge grin and start dancing when you hear it? I think it should have been a single too.

Wild_Heart03 08-07-2005 06:39 AM

Words can barely begin to express how much I love this song. I remember listening to a Stevie Nicks radio station somewhere when I first started getting into her, and when I heard "If I Were You" I just fell in love. Everytime I listen to RAL I have to play it first before I listen to the rest of the album, lol.

Ditto to all of the above.

darklinensuit 08-07-2005 11:16 AM

One of my least favorites from her - Bottom Ten for me.

ON EDIT: Ooops, I voted wrong. I thought this thread was for ISFTT.  I love If I Were You - a very fun song.
Now I'd like to change my vote!

I completely agree with Marissa, RAL is one of my favorite albums. I love the vocal, I love the carefree attitude of it, and yet how while being carefree, it still has it's serious moments like the title track and No Spoken Word. If I Were You fits in perfectly with the vibe of the album, it's fun, it's upbeat, and it still has an air of sexiness.

It's incredibly sexy. I wish she'd sing it now, actually. I think her present voice would be well suited for performing this song live

I actually never thought of that, but now that you've mentioned it, I agree. The odds of her actually doing it are shall we say slim to none, but wow, what an amazing vocal that could be

KarmaContestant 08-07-2005 04:27 PM

If I Were You...

I'd say I like this song. What interests me the most about this track is the instrumentation. The music that accompanies this song is....this is gonna sound strange....but whenever I hear it, I sort of fade out mentally on the vocal, and I only hear the music. It sounds to me like what you would hear while watching someone run through a canyon while a HUGE wave threatens from behind. The whole time, they're running and running, but the water keeps getting closer. Odd, yes.

She'd much rather cover other artists songs  but I can't complain because it's been amazing to see her take on someone elses material. However, i'd love (and I know we all would love) if she pulled out some things she would never think to do. Crowd pleasers always win out because unfortunately, she can't just market herself to her fan base (those geeks that know every song) -- she has to go with the classics to appeal to a wider spectrum. Sad, it's very true :distress:

Edit: Does anyone actually have a demo or an extended version of this song (if one exists?)

estranged4life 08-08-2005 07:43 PM

Probably...

my second favorite track off of the "Rock A Little" album...I can jam to this as I am driving down the interstate.

GODDESS6 08-08-2005 07:51 PM

it is a good song, not one of my favs, but it doesn't suck~

xxxmx 08-08-2005 08:23 PM

the 'learn to be a man' line makes this song for me. the music makes me smile, the vocals are nicely blended, perky in a non-sucky way.

well if you were me, you'd be listening to If I Were You right now ;)

SapphireSister 08-08-2005 09:27 PM

While RAL is my second (depending on what day you ask me) favorite album I still consider half the songs on there to be medicore and this is one of them. It's catchy and upbeat but far from a favorite or one I would want to mention in a conversation about her music. I pretty much agree with Paula except my favorite part of the song musically and lyrically is this:
"Well, I believe that love is a living thing
Born into our destinies
From a single moment of inspiration
And as it grows it changes your life forever!"

Love that part, the rest of the song, well it's just ok.
