Like or Dislike: HAEWAFY

I told you I might get a lil' crazy & go out of sequence. I'm a wild child sometimes, I live life on the edge.

So. I do not like this song that much. There. I said it. It's very bland to me - lyrics, vocal performance and music. I just don't feel what she's singing to me, it doesn't touch my heart & soul like I think it should. I do not tear up, I do not get chills - nothing. Very blah.

I can't stand "if not for me, then do it for the world." Way too sappy. Come on, Stevie, do it for the world? Please - do what for the world, and will anyone in the world really care what I've done? Not likely. The lyrics I do like are:

"And the rain comes down
There's no pain and there's no doubt"

and live:

"And when they ask her, about the men in her life - and they do ask her - she says well, they were poets. And yet, they were priests of nothing. But they were legends. Poet. Priest of nothing. Legend. Poet. Priest of nothing. Legend. poet. Priest of.........NOTHING!" That last NOTHING is pretty cool when she nails it.

Live - eh. Not that much better than the album, with the exception of the last lines I just quoted. I don't get up & leave or go to the bathroom or anything, but I don't get that connection with her that I feel on other tunes live (B&tB, Edge.)

Let the flogging begin.

amber 08-01-2005 02:46 PM

gross. It could be so much prettier with a few different note choices in the music. Some parts can be touching, but, really, I never, ever listen to it. Ever.

mikeschmike 08-01-2005 02:49 PM

I love when she sings it live.

"I want you to remember..."

don't worry, I will.

Hawkeye 08-01-2005 02:54 PM

I never cared much for this song, but its still one of the very best songs on RAL. But it was absolutely freaking AMAZING in Cleveland. And paula the only part of the song I dont care for is the Poets, Priests of Nothing, Legends thing. ESPECIALLY live. I hate the way the auidience went nuts when she says that line. Its like the first half of the song is all about her writing a song for someone and then for the whole world and its a great song lyrically and its beautiful and then she has to go talking about the freaking men in her life. WHO CARES about the men in your life, the men in your life have enoug songs, leave them out of this one.

Love It

I love this song, I guess, more "live" than I do on the CD. I love the "And I thought that there was...a con-nec-tion" part live. And when she does her little "and they ask her about the men in her life" add ons.

Bright blessings, Barbara

dudden22 08-01-2005 02:57 PM

I only like it live. I think the vocals on the album are pretty weak. It could have been a great song, but it was just recorded when she was in such bad shape vocally and physically

OUCH .....that hurt's. I love this song. I put it right up there with B&TB, there I said it. Stevie doesn't really have alot of ballad's (I mean serious ballad's) so i guess I just take what I can get, but definitely, it is way better live. :wavey:

I love this song live, only becuase of that part. I'm not a huge fan of the album version.

Neal 08-01-2005 03:08 PM

I guess I'm in the minority; I like the album version better than most live versions.

This was always a pretty song to me, and I rarely skipped it, but I've come to really love these past few months. Mostly because I played it for my roommate a while back and he got really choked up, almost cried and wanted to hear it again. And again. I finally broke the awkward silence (I get uncomfortable when others cry) and asked what was wrong. Without going into too many details, he told me it made him think of the strained relationship he has with his family, and particularly his estranged younger brother who died a few years ago. Anyways, it just served to remind me of how Stevie's lyrics touch people in many different ways.

So the past few times I've heard HAEWAFY, I'm hearing it through his ears and it's like the first time.

I believe in this song. I think it's pretty good stuff. It has a nice background story to it....and I think it can be a really emotional song when it is in the right place, at the right time.

Serrart 08-01-2005 03:17 PM

I like it, especially live during this tour.

I see your point & I think I like her delivery of those lines better than the words themselves.

BlackWidow 08-01-2005 04:09 PM

No Flogging!

I agree with you. I wish Stevie would sing the song like she recorded it.
Her additional lyrics take away from it's original meaning and power.
My friends and I often jokingly refer to that as her "Stevie-Rap"

I'm the same way. I like the album version, but it really comes alive to me when it is performed live. I love the "if not for me, then, do it for yourself" and everything that follows.

mcboo 08-01-2005 04:18 PM

I only like it live, but she could sing the phone book and as long as it was live I would like it! ;)

dissention 08-01-2005 04:18 PM

Yeah, I've heard it sing it.

I would have given it a lower grade if it wasn't for some of her live performances. The song itself sticks out like a sore thumb on the mess that is Rock A Little and it has too many cheesy lines ("And the rain comes down," "This is your song," etc.) for me to like a whole lot. She also doesn't seem to be into that much on the album cut as much as she does live. In a live setting, there are times when she sings in an emotionally honest manner as Janis Joplin once did. It's just kind of boring on the album, maybe too earnest for it's own good. She once said she banged it out in five minutes and you can tell when you listen to it.

AliceLover 08-01-2005 04:42 PM

Ive heard her sing this in concert on two tours, thats enough! :)

it is somewhat bland on the album. it doesn't have huge swells and lots of vocal acrobatics, but I think it is what it is and I really think the lyrics are nice and as you say, live it is a totally different creature.

and I don't like it ending RAL

You're not the only one. But then again I tend to prefer album versions in a lot of cases.

I used to love, love, love it. When I first became a fan, I would've told you this was one of my very favorite songs of hers. I used to cry when I listened to it because of the lyrics, music, and performance. Nowadays I still consider it one of the best tracks on RAL and I think it's beautiful but I'm rather sick of it as well. I don't play it so much anymore.

jannieC 08-01-2005 04:55 PM

Hey guys- my computer (at home) puked out for a while, so I'm at the library now. Anyway- I was a teen-ager when this song first came out and I loved it. I used to listen to it right after my father died, and somehow made it MY song. When I saw her on the RAL tour, she said something to the effect that she wished she could sit down and talk to each one of us individually (or something drug induced like that) and again, being a teenager I just LOVED it.

So yes, I love this song. Every time I see Stevie live, I'm afraid it may be the last time, so when she sings, "I want you to remember me...", I get all choked up.

golden braid 08-01-2005 10:55 PM

I love this song, epsecially the live versions. My favorite versions are when she ended with "and I thought that there was a connection."

equeen102289 08-01-2005 11:27 PM

I love this song on the album and live. My favorite versions are the one Red Rocks and the one from Storytellers. They end differently, but she nails them both.

I like that this song is special to her and that she sings it with such conviction live.

TheBlueLamp 08-02-2005 03:50 AM

It's alright. I'd tend to skip it a lot though when listening to Stevie stuff. I think it's totally out of place on Rock A Little though.

DrummerDeanna 08-02-2005 09:33 AM

I believe in this song too :)

But - I've got a little background with it - someone wrote it down for me once etc...lots of emotional ties for me with that song.

Indeed. I've never heard it done live, and maybe my opinion would change if I had - but I gave it the lowest rating. I like simple melodies, so it's not that - it's the lyrics. "Do it for the world" may not have been so bad if she'd sung it plainly, but the extra vocals overdo it.

"Well I have... I have given that to you..." I'm sorry, but I always think "Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back, Stevie!"

[email protected] 08-02-2005 11:09 AM

This song...

This song, and in the old days "Songbird" with Fleetwood Mac, and "Edge Of Seventeen" her solo tours, always made me cry, because I knew that meant the concert was almost finished and the night of Magick was done...I would not see her again for who knows how long....

The Tower 08-02-2005 11:50 AM

I love all of it. Album version, live version- all of it. For me, the conviction pulls off anything that might be cliche ("this is your song") or trite ("and the rain comes down").

It's a totally selfless song. It's the complete 180 of all her self-absorbed crap like "Greta" and the like.

"It was easy to say, 'I believed in you every day'"

It's a very sad, longing song- urging someone to not give up, to not give into despair. Again, entirely selfless-

"If not for me, then do it for yourself
If not for me, then do it for the world
"

The Day In The Garden performance is so awesomely heavy. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

I'll give you that. That whole show was spectacular, but HAEWAFY was truly amazing that day.

Macfanforever 08-02-2005 06:04 PM

Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You, Yes Stevie did. Numver one fave..

xxxmx 08-02-2005 06:39 PM

i adore this song. i had this guyfriend in high school, what a messy situation it became, but anyways... we grew up just south of pittsburgh,pa (not known for much natural beauty these days) and had managed to find a really beautiful spot overlooking a reservoir and we'd watch the sun set every wednesday. it was our thing. and we would sit there in the quietude and sing lovely songs. and the last time we did this before we graduated (and i was moving away and big messy BS blah blah) he sang HAEWAFY to me in this very soft and sad voice and it tore me up. a) he had a really great voice b) he sought out the song because he knew i loved stevie

so this is a very big song for me because of that. it was also the last time we ever spoke. big drama. he got his hands on a live version so he threw in the "i want you to remember me" part.

ps just to be funny, me and matt ruthlessly mock the "and they ask her about the men in her life" part.

Kelly 08-02-2005 06:40 PM

Uh, I hate it. I really just do not like the song at all. Sooo self absorbed.

I do love the Day in the Garden performance...the pointing at whomever was in the wings while singing "I have given that to YOUUUUUUUU". (no, it wasn't Joe, puhleeze) The sobbing and shaking shoulders. Shivers. I cry whenever I watch it, it's so overwhelmingly sad.
