Kinsey Scale

Did we ever do this??? I seem to remember somebody saying they were going to start this thread, but I never saw it.

Anywhooo... Where do you fall on the the Kinsey Scale?

This scale was developed by Dr. Alfred Kinsey and his associates in the late '40s and early '50s. These results were supported in studies conducted by Masters and Johnson and other sex researchers, though some more recent studies have reported lower rates nationally, with higher rates in urban areas. These studies collectively indicate there is a broad spectrum of sexual orientations - not just heterosexual and homosexual. Instead of looking a sexual orientation as an either-or condition, Kinsey developed a seven point continuum based on the degree of sexual responsiveness people have to the members of the same and other sex.

0 - exclusively heterosexual

1 - predominantly heterosexual, incidentally homoexual

2 - predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual

3 - equally heterosexual and homosexual

4 - predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual

5 - predominantly homosexual, incidentally heterosexual

6 - exclusively homosexual

It is necessary to consider a variety of activities in assessing an individual's ranking on the continuum:

· fantasies · dreams · thoughts

· frequency of sexual activities · emotional feelings

Therefore, many "heterosexuals" would fall, in fact, somewhere between 0 and 3 because they occasionally think/dream/fantasize about sexual activities with members of the same gender and/or occasionally act on these feelings.

Kinsey's researchers found that over a three-year period:

4 - 6% of men were rated as "6"

10 % of men were rated 4, 5, or 6

18% of men were rated as 3, 4, 5, or 6

37% of all men experienced orgasm in a sexual activity with another man at some time in their life.

60% of all men had some type of homosexual relationship before they were age 16.

30% of all men had some type of homosexual relationship between age 20 - 24.

Ranks for women were about one-half that of men (exact percentages were not provided by Kinsey). Keep in mind, this research was conducted as a time of lower sexual activity for women than recent surveys have indicated.

Research was conducted primarily with white college educated, volunteer subjects and with prisoners. This research did not clearly parcel out behaviors which did not persit from adolesence into adult life.

I am a 6 :blob2: :blob2: :blob2:

GateandGarden 07-25-2005 11:28 AM

I guess I'm somewhere between 5 and 6, leaning more toward the 6.

GateandGarden 07-25-2005 11:45 AM

I would think that the rarest number would be 3. How many people are equally attracted to both sexes?

DrummerDeanna 07-25-2005 11:47 AM

Depending on the day I guess I'm either a 2 or a four

Mari 07-25-2005 11:51 AM

Um.. I was going to say the same thing. Maybe seen over time a bit more a two though.

Nixxxed 07-25-2005 12:06 PM

Have you folks seen "Kinsey" the movie? I really liked it... It's structured just like Kinsey's sex interview, in an attempt to disarm the viewer. One minute, you're watching a nice romantic, or even funny scene, then a jump cut happens and someone is full-face on the screen asking, "How do you feel about cunnilingus???"

By the way, on this scale I think I would be a 7 ... maybe 8. :D

I watched the GLAAD Media Awards last night on LOGO. They were all up about this movie. Haven't seen it, though. Has it been released on DVD yet?

What exactly would be the definition of a 7 and an 8??

DrummerDeanna 07-25-2005 12:11 PM

I rented Kinsey -then never watched it - I don't know why I rented it - I was moving and didn't have the time to watch it - I guess I rented in the hopes that I would have time :D

I loved that movie! And Peter Sarsgaard is a total hottie.

Miss Vicky 07-25-2005 12:13 PM

1.5?

I mostly like men, but ya know... every once in awhile a chick will strike my fancy.

What exactly would be the definition of a 7 and an 8??

Yeah, it's on DVD now. My library even got a copy, to my utter shock. I guess they hadn't heard about the scene discussing the size of Mr. Kinsey's schlong. (I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it.)

And:

7 - exclusively homosexual, experiences nausea at the thought of heterosexual sex

8 - exclusively homosexual, faints at the thought of heterosexual sex

(no offense, ladies... :xoxo: )

No offense taken in fact - what you described above is how I was feeling at the end of my last relationship

Neal 07-25-2005 12:39 PM

Definitely a big fat 6!

KarmaContestant 07-25-2005 12:42 PM

Well, these days I'd be a 6.

14 years ago...in high school, and for a year or so afterwards, I would have fallen somewhere around a 4.

About three years ago, this girl I worked with...Olivia...we were at a party, and she beckons me to join her in the hallway. So I did, thinking she had something to tell me. Once I was in the hallway, she shoved me into another room, closed the door, and pushed me up against it, and before I knew what was happening, her tongue was in my mouth. Blech. Anyhow, I was trying to push her off of me, and she just said, "Come on honey, give me some sugar..." I was mortified! I did manage to get away after a moment, but needless to say, the experience was most unpleasant. I worked with this girl for a year prior to this, and she had never exhibited any interest in me.....so I guess she had some sort of pent up tension she needed to release.

The next day at work, she was not the least bit embarassed.....she seemed quite proud of herself. I, on the other hand, avoided her for a few days......until I was sure she wasn't going to jump me in the breakroom.

Speaking of 6's - are you excited about the Andy Bell solo album? My friend Larry is absolutely beside himself. I don't think he can wait another 2 months. He may explode before then ... *BOOM*.

I'm totally excited! Commercial-flop factor aside, I know it's gonna be great! :woohoo:

Hey - good luck with that - I'm still bitter about losing some 1,000 posts recently during the chit-chat clean-up

I am a 7, I am thinking. Even though I have an occasional crush on a woman, I could never follow through. The reality makes me shudder.
