Lineups on new songs from The Chain set
Hi. Apologies if this has been covered before, but can someone tell me who actually played on the 4 new songs from The Chain set?
|
Welcome to the Ledge. :)
I believe the lineup for each is as follows.... "Paper Doll" (basic tracks recorded in 1988 -- originally intended for 'Greatest Hits,' but replaced by "No Questions Asked," which Mick preferred): Stevie, Christine, Mick, John, Billy & Rick, with Lindsey's vocals (and perhaps guitar, too) overdubbed onto the song in 1992. "Heart Of Stone": Christine, Mick, John & Billy, with Stevie's overdubbed backing vocals. "Love Shines": Christine, Mick, John & Billy. "Make Me A Mask: Lindsey solo, recorded during the 'Out Of The Cradle' sessions. |
Thanks for the welcome.
And thanks for the quick response! |

What about Goodbye Angel? That wasnt a new song either, but I think it was the first time it was released. And of course Silver Springs was on there...and Teen Beat. As well as the extended-ending version of Gypsy....AND the marching band intro version of Tusk. There were a whole bunch of "new" gems on there.
|
I always liked Love Shines and Heart of Stone. Especially the latter. It just sounds like a Christine-singing-about-John song.

"Paper Doll", "Love Shines", "Heart Of Stone", & "Make Me A Mask" were BRAND new...whereas "Goodbye Angel" & "Teen Beat" were "as is" included from the Mirage sessions. "Gypsy" was just the video's mix of the song. "Tusk" was just a remix from the master multi-track recording, as was "Isn't It Midnight". And, even a "lost gem" from the FG/BT era, "Trinity". Despite all that, overall though, I thought the box set was poorly done. |

I love No Questions Asked. To me, it's one of those ehh, not so serious, just fun song with cool beat - don't take it too seriously. |

Pittsburgh radio was playing it when it was released as a single (before the boxed-set came out), and I thought it was just great. Still one of my favorites to this day. |

There are five officially released versions of "Gypsy"... the album version, the 7" mix, the "unedited alternate version" from the boxed-set, the first video mix which MTV used to play and then the second video mix which we hear now instead (when MTV started playing the latter, around 1989, the chyron noted the album as "Mirage/CD" -- although it's not the CD version either, so go figure). |

"You spend lots of time alone/sometimes you spend years" (Who does THAT sound like?!?) "Well I need you now. Well I'm broken hearted. I broke down like a little girl." (Which I took to be about the events of Aug. 7, 1987.) |

I guess I've just always felt the "Stevie Nicks/Rick Vito/John Herron" writing credit on "Paper Doll" had more to do with that decision than anything else. |

Love Shines and Heart of Stone are my favs from the "new" songs. They should have been put on an album and become singles.

I love No Questions Asked. Paper Doll is good too. To me neither song is really deep or emotional but they are alot of fun to listen and sing along to.

This band has never been very literal (reference the vuluminous notes, observations and articles contained in other artists' reissues and compilations -- often written by the artists themselves.). As such, the book contains almost nothing to read and a seemingly random bunch of photos. Information is scant and sometimes inaccurate. The project wasn't as inspired as it should have been. The songs appear as if they just hit the shuffle button to come up with a sequence. And there's just a passing nod to their blues and middle period eras. They should have made a distinction -- is this going to be a box set dedicated to the Rumours era band? Or, is it going to be a fair representation of their entire history? If so, the song selection should have been more balanced, even if that meant another cd or two. And what the hell was Stand Back doing there? |

So today she said "Well, I've changed my mind... That's a woman's right they say" |
Thanks also for the alternate NQA.
Since I started the trhead, I guess I should weigh in that I prefer Paper Doll to NQA. It's nice to hear Stevie sing an upbeat song - that isn't about someone coming in to a room. |

I'm not really familiar with those albums, but am I right that this was a period when the band was 'lead' by Danny? Is this the same on the full box - this period not represented? Is there a reason other than space for this omssion? Edit: Put the '[/' before the 2nd QUOTE |
