Like or Dislike: How Still My Love
This song had to grow on me. It's probably in my Top 20. There's something about that way it's all mellow & sexy, then builds to something more forceful, then comes back down again. The vocal is subdued at the mellow parts & raging at the intense parts. The lyrics are hot.
"Standing...in the doorway Watching out to sea Calling out to me You go...your way Go on...go on But you don't forget me Ooo no...you don't forget me Oooo no...my lonely one You're doing all you can for me They say you're not the man for me Don't I make it easy In the still of the night It's...me...talking to you" Live is always better than the album version, IMO, whether it be older tours or recently in Vegas (hello Wednesday 5-11!) More powerful, sexier. |
Wow - you guys are talkative today.
|
This is one of my favorite songs! Top 3!!!!! :woohoo:
It's just so.. perfect It really should have been on " Enchanted" |
The first time I truly warmed to it was Vegas. I loved it there. So I went back and gave the album version another shot. I enjoy it now - maybe not my Top 20, but inching closer.

An all-time fave from Day One.
|
Don't love this one, I'm afraid.
Paula, is it me, or does it look like the Stevie in the screen in your sig is not the Stevie on stage? I keep looking at it and thinking, her head's not angled the same way. I think I need a life |
I love HSMYL. Probably in my top 20 songs by Stevie. I like the masters of this one better I think.
|
I like this song too and I always have but I didn't start really liking it until recently. Seeing Stevie perform it in Vegas revived my interest in the song.

Now that I stare at it (I don't have a life either) I think you're right. It was live in Vegas, maybe there's a short delay of a second or two? *runs to look at the other shots* |
Adore It!
I absolutely LOVE "How Still My Love", it is one of my very favourites, definatly TOP FIVE of all time. I can understand why Stevie loves to sing it live, as it is so powerful. I chose to do it for my sound check in Cincinnati last weekend, and I just will include it any time I can! (if you would like to hear the soundcheck, you can check it out here: "How Still My Love"). I can't believe anyone wouldn't love this, but I am prejudiced...LOL.. :blob1: Blessings, Barbara |
Where to Begin
HSML is such a special song to me so I finally get a chance to ramble about it...Bella Donna has never been one of my favorite albums and to be honest when I first bought it a couple years ago (I've only been a die-hard Stevie fan for just over 2 years) I wasn't too fond of HSML. I think I may have even skipped it! I can't tell you when it was but not too long ago that I heard a live boot with HSML and it hit me like a ton of bricks! I fell in love with whatever live version I happened to be listening to and the rest is history. It's definitely a top 10 song for me. It's sooooo incredibly sexy and I love when Stevie referrs to it as her "favorite song". It's also cute that she calls it "In the Still of the Night" (I wonder why she didn't call it that on the album?). This part of the song OMG I could die everytime I hear it-
"Standing...in the doorway Watching out to sea Calling out to me You go...your way Go on...go on But you don't forget me Ooo no...you don't forget me" I have said those words in my head to a former lover lol. You know how you get chills when you hear certain songs? Well I just got chills simply from reading the lyrics! Now that's powerful :). I had no idea she was going to do this in Vegas (5/14), wasn't on The Ledge then and didn't want to know the setlist. Well when this song came on that was the time they let us rush the stage and I made it up directly in front of Stevie for this song! You can imagine what a moment that was for me to be standing in front of her singing my favorite live song and it was a total surprise. That was the most memorbale moment of me ever seeing Stevie live. And who couldn't love how she sexed it up which is classic cause that's exactly how I dance to this song when I hear it. I'm terribly dissapointed it got dropped from the set list *tears* but I am so excited to see that it's getting 5 stars in the poll from so many people! |
After Vegas, i'm obsessed with it. Amazing song -- amazing vocals
|
It's not my Top Ten, but I gave it five stars. I always prefered it to OTR, which is the one that had to grow on me. (In the minority once again there.)

Definitely a five-star song for me. It's already been mentioned a couple of times but the lines:
Standing...in the doorway Watching out to sea Calling out to me You go...your way Go on...go on But you don't forget me Ooo no...you don't forget me Oooo no...my lonely one paint some of the most vivid images of any of Stevies lyrics for me. They always make me think of the TISL cover too. I love HSML. It's probably my second favourite song on BD |
I love HSML, but I only gave it four stars just because it's a song that seems to slip from my mind unless someone brings it up. Once it's mentioned, then I say to myself "oh, I love that song!", but if someone were to just randomly ask me what my top ten stevie songs were, I wouldn't think to include this one.
|
Five big stars. I agree that it is a very sexy song and I love how Stevie changes her vocals to match the varying intensity.
This daily chat about the Bella Donna songs is reminding me what a masterpiece that album is. |
^ Good! I wanted to try something a little different, a bit more focused than our usual "what's your favorite song" or the Survivor threads.
Those are fun too, but I thought this would give people the chance to really think about exactly why they do or don't like a specific song & discuss it. BD is almost done - shall I go in order & move on to TWH next? Skip around & do TISL next? Or RAL? Or soundtrack stuff? Opinions? |

I kind of like going in order, but whatever you choose will be fine. |

I've always loved HSML, but after watching her perform it in Vegas it's definitely one of my all-time favs. She was on fire. |
I have always loved this song.
It's a very good song. Love the bass lines and guitar riffs w/ piano. |
5 Star all the way. Love Love Love this song. Top 10 for sure. Great in the studio and live. I happened to love what I heard from the Vegas boots and was devastated it was not in the Gold Dust set list. I for some reason consider this and Outside the Rain cousins. I dont if they're really that similar, but to me they are. And of the two I prefer Outside The Rain only slightly which I guess would put it in top 5 while HSML is top 10. But I guess we'll be on OTR tomorrow! How Still My Love also makes me think of Jimmy Iovine, because its playing in the background of her BTM while shes discussing Iovine.

4 stars. This song would be nothing without the bridge. It makes the song. I like how her vocal grows throughout the song. However, it is a buzzkill after the bridge....you want more...but all you get is ad libs. That's why I didn't give it a 5.
|
LOVE this song!! In my top 3 Stevie songs I'd say. I love the live versions from the WH tour the best I think. Though....it's good any tour really....
|
At first I only gave this three stars...its one of those songs that I forget I love. It just doesnt register when I think of Stevie songs I love....but I do! The live boots are the best, but its a great song. The lyrics get me too..very powerful.

My favorite off of Bella Donna! It had to grow on me, too. I used to hate it but it is easily in MY Top Ten now! I put this on a mix CD and I listen to it with my friends in my car, and they LOVE it! This song is so hot, and they all agree, too! Love the live versions too. I really like the whole bass line, and Waddy's guitar playing. It has so much fire in it.
|
Five Stars.
After Wednesday in Vegas, I could never give it anything less than five stars! I have always loved the song anyway but like Marissa, I am now obsessed. Favorite part..."hold still...hold still my love". Sizzle..... BTW...alot of people were disappointed that she dropped the word "one" from the line "my lonely one"....I have a feeling that she did it entirely intentionally. Perhaps her "one" is no longer lonely? I love how Stevie introduces the song as "In the Still of the Night". She does the same thing with IaF by introducing it "If Anyone Falls in Love". |
Not a favorite of mine to be truthful  The demos blow away the album version if you ask me--and I do love it live--but it kind of lost something when put on the actual album.........
|
who is that singing the HSML rehearsal you posted Barabara. Is it Stevie? If it is she sings it better in rehearsal then she does live,a nd if its Sharon, then gosh danm it let her sing the danm thing live while Stevie takes a break
|
I keep re listening to it, and I juts cant make heads or tails of it. I know Sharon's voice pretty good, and this just doesnt sound like the girl who sings on Edge of 17 The singer has a lot of Stevie like phrasings of words, but at times it just DOESN'T sound like her. Whoever it is sings the Lonley OOOONNNNNEEEEE line. Its not Venesa either. Could it be Jana?

I think it sounds pretty good too, actually. I was quite surprised by how similar Barbara sounds like Stevie. :) If I may offer up a bit of constructive criticism, however (and I am just stating a subjective opinion--I do think overall that sounded awesome), relax and enjoy rather than spending so much vocal energy making sure you sound exactly like Stevie sounded on the album. It almost sounds a little too imitative at times, and not as much like you're singing from the heart. I think you sound enough like Stevie that you could afford to relax and ad lib a little, . Although, I realize it was just a soundcheck! Pretty spot-on for a soundcheck! :D |
Oh, by the way, I gave HSML four stars in the poll. It's one of her better songs...very sexy and smouldering.
