Blue Lamp

I am sort of late to this. I've had Enchanted for years but never noticed this song until now. WOW!!!! This is my new favorite song. I love the lyrics and music. Upstairs, big old house is mine! And then how the lyrucs just kind of quickly fade out at the end. Just a very cool song. Anyone know what year this was recorded?

It's from the Heavy Metal Soundtrack - I think 1981 release. (Recorded in BD days??)

I'm not nuts about all the lyrics, but I love the melody & her vocal & phrasing. My favorite part is the last few lines - wish it were longer - And the light that shines, etc.

My favorite part too...

For some reason it sounded like it could have been Late 80's early 90's Stevie (in a way) but still sounded like early 80's Stevie. Normally I can pinpoint an exact year with her voice, but sometimes a song can throw me for a loop.

No, her voice there matches the Bella Donna album exactly, IMO. TOSOTM, Mask, & TimeSpace voice was not as great as that earlier voice.

Yup, now that I'm listening to it I can see that. Her voice is great in this song! I think I'm really excited because I just haven't heard a new Stevie song in a long time... because the song is like new to me even though I have had it for years I never thought anything of it.

whitesoxx 07-20-2005 03:12 AM

Now there's a song I would love to hear her do live again!!!

This was the very first thing she tracked (as opposed to just doing demos with Tom Moncrief or the Tom Pettybreakers in 1979 & 1980) as a solo artist, according to her. It was recorded in late 1980 & early 1981.

I like that song too. I love the ending where she says "And the light that shines thru the shining night is the lamp that I carried from my mothers home..." Probably the best part of the song, and its the fading ending! =)

. . . and she sang it on the BD tour

u just heard "Blue Lamp" for the first time NOW?? where have u been, son? ;)

vermicious knid 07-20-2005 10:24 AM

"Blue Lamp", "Gold and Braid", and "Sleeping Angel" all should have been on Bella Donna.

DrummerDeanna 07-20-2005 10:33 AM

Ah - I thought maybe this thread was about the actual blue lamp :p

The song took a while to grow on me - I really didn't like it at first, it's still not one of my favorites - but I do enjoy it. The actual lamp, on the other hand, I love!

Dreammms 07-20-2005 10:54 AM

Blue Lamp is one of my favorites. I too love the ending part and wish it didn't fade out like that.

ELIUD 07-20-2005 11:15 AM

My favorite part is the "ooh ooooh... yeeeahhhh.... ooh ooohhh... yeeeeahhh..."

SapphireSister 07-20-2005 11:59 AM

I don't like this song one bit. :sorry: I'm one of the few people who doesn't like most of Enchanted Disk 3 (with the exception of a few songs).

*Gasp!* Disc 3... is... my... favorite. I know we all have different tastes, but I personally can't imagine life without Free Fallin', Gold and Braid, Blue Lamp, Violet and Blue, Somebody Stand By Me, Sleeping Angel... It's one of my favorite Stevie compilations!

"Blue Lamp" is definately not one of my favorites, either.. but i have to disagree with disc 3 on 'Enchanted"... i love so many songs on there - "Twisted" demo, "Sweet Girl", "Sleeping Angel", etc etc

There are only 4 songs I like on there - Long Distance Winner, Gold and Braid, Sleeping Angel, and Rhiannon piano and none of them are favorites. The rest - yuck.

I've also heard her say that it was the first time she ever recorded in the same room, at the same time as the musicians. Something along the lines of "it was very odd, yet refreshing, as Fleetwood Mac could *never* record that way..."

I love the atmosphere of this song, but once in a great while if I'm in a weird mood, the lyrics can really get on my nerves. I don't know if it is the actual words ("Christmas angel"), or the feeling of betrayal she's trying to convey. But the last "and the light that shines..." section always picks me back up and makes everything OK.

This song came out before Bella Donna. It truly is Stevie's first solo song ever released.

I agree with this.

amber 07-20-2005 03:19 PM

I have a long, funny, demo of this where Stevie is talking during a lot of it. I actually had the demo before the song, but I do love the song. A lot.

GypsySorcerer 07-20-2005 03:23 PM

I love "Blue Lamp," especially the music.

whaa!??! Ah well. I think Reconsider Me is great. One of better tracks from that era. I cant BELIEVE she didnt release that on an album for whatever reason.

svnwndrs 07-20-2005 04:11 PM

I really love one of the master reel versions of this song with the drum machine. It has the creepiest vocals that Stevie and her girls have ever recorded!

"If you were wiser you would get out!"

The song itself is very, I dunno, "gothic".

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wanna ask her "WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING"

Instead, we get "The Nightmare," which some may like, but I suggest it was hardly hit material.

I agree. In fact, in an interview around that time, she goes into how she writes and sings in a Chanting type of way, which was popular in the Gothic period.

Really? See that's one of the things I love about Stevie's music. She has all these chants hidden in her songs and that's why they sound so "witchy" and they fit her style. Cool info strandinthewind!

Actually another song with cool chanting is "All The Beautiful Worlds".

Thanks - I wish I could find the interview - I think it was in Playboy of all things.

I really like this song and always have. The production and atmosphere are fantastic. It got played a lot on the local rock station in Portland when I was but a teen. That station loved Stevie. I don't know that it could have been a big hit...the structure is kind of wierd...but I love it.

She did it a little on The Enchanted tour and it sent shivers down my spine and tears to my eyes, esp. when she NAILED Sleeping Angel.

We also saw much of it (though lower with age) on this last tour with Circle Dance, B&B, and Rock and Roll. She also did it in Say Goodbye on the SYW tour. I think it is still there but she knows she cannot at her age use it too much. Also, the new Dreams remix vocals - sheebus!

To clarify - she is not nearly as vocally limber as the BD era, but she can go to that range or at least close to it and that gives me pause

When was this - in 98 or did they play it before then?

Same here. They had a weekly "songs to get stoned by" radio show on Friday nights at midnight -- can't remember the name of the show, but it was a very obvious pun with both Stone and Rock in the title.

Regardless, "Blue Lamp" was a fave of the crowd that listened to the show. They'd call in all blasted and slur, "Heyyyyy mannnnn, playyy thaaat AWWWWEEESSOOMMMMMME SSSSSSSteeeevvvviiiiieeee NNNNiiiiicccckkkkkssss ssssonnnnggg abooooouuuuttt theeee laaaaammmmpppppp."

I was too young to participate, but it was a great listen.
