Like or Dislike - Stop Draggin...
I like SDMHA, but I don't love it. It may be that it's one of Stevie's more overplayed songs - this is usually the one I hear on the radio. I prefer the album version over recent live versions, but I do love it on the 1981 In Concert video. It's done too low now, and it seems to me like she's just going through the motions at most shows - no emotion, no fire (as compared the recent renditions of Sorcerer or B&tB, for example.)
The music is rockin' & that I like. The lyrics - eh. Not the best, not the worst. There are tons more tunes by Stevie (and Petty, for that matter) that I prefer over this one. I love the video - nothing fancy, just Stevie & Tom singing with the band jamming. Good stuff. In conclusion, it's a good song. I don't skip it. I do sing along. I do dance to it when I see her do it live. It's just not one of my favorites. How do YOU feel about Stop Draggin' My Heart Around? |

I loved it when it first came out but now I'm kind of tired of it...... I do have to agree though that the version from the '81 concert is awesome--every song she sang at that concert was unbelievable and so full of energy--my favorite concert video--maybe ever!! Could never understand why it wasn't put out on DVD--especially before Red Rocks  Love love love the video though with the hair bead thing going on  Amy |
It's a damn good song. The lyrics are right on. The vocals are right on. I think it was a great way to begin her solo career. She went out of the gate rocking. With that being said, I don't think it should be played live anymore. It's out of her range, and she sings it w/o Tom. After the Wild Heart Tour, it should have been left for special performances. She had a lot of hits and SDMHA wouldn't have been missed that much.

If we're talking about the live version, then drop it already. :distress:
But I have a great fondness for the studio version. |
if the magic wish-granting-faerie came to my door, right after i was done redecorating and losing twenty pounds - SDMHA would be forever retired from live performances. it is the one song that i want OUT of the setlist, never to return until she's actually singing it with tom petty at some random event. then i will love it as i once-upon-a-time did.

Definately a Nice Little Ditty!

I love this song. It will be excellent if Tom Petty joins Stevie on tour like Don Henley did earlier. that will be awesome with Tom and Don on the same show.I think i'm asking for to much, huh. lol..

My love for this song is powerful and enduring. It knows no boundaries of time or space. Except the space and time of doing it live, now. I still like it, but she's tooootally welcome to drop it for something new.
|
I like it. Would like it more live with tom petty doing his part, I believe. :]
|
I'm not a great fan of this song, never have been. I don't know why it just doesn't involve me. It's the same thing for Outside The Rain.

I much prefer the live versions now, because I feel they have a little bit more "kick" than the studio version. Just my opinion.
|
Uh, drop it already. The only recent performance of it that I like is Stevie's drunken, lyric forgetting one with Sheryl Crow. I strongly dislike Waddy attempting to do Tom Petty's vocals and it is just way out of Stevie's range these days. Sorry.

One of my favorite performances of it was Stevie & the Tom Pettybreakers at the Mulholland Tomorrow show in 1985. She did it in a trenchcoat! |
2 words - Waddy Wachtel. That kills it for me every time.

When I first heard it, I couldn't get enough of it. I still like it, but the album version is best. The video is great too!
|
Nice little ditty. I love the live version from the HBO concert - the piano & guitar are perfect & Stevie's air drumming is cool.
I'd rank the song with the video, good but not her very best. - Jake |

I have huge love for the studio version of SDMHA. It was the first Stevie song I fell in love with on the radio when I was about 10 years old. Had no idea who it was by, but I knew I loved the girl singer's voice. To this day, the opening bars give me shivers.
Absolute perfection. |
I think SDMHA is a great opener. I was so surprised when I was at the TISL concert and she opened with it. I thought it was a great choice, it was nice to see a new opener. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Outside the Rain, but it was so nice to have something new. But in the words of Ryan "Don't mess with Perfection"

funny cause i've actually had a renewed interest in this song (studio version).
it's come out of nowhere, really. i remember tom petty talking about how the song was basically finished and on his version he was actually singing the melody. stevie's part is louder and it overshadows his part. so i've listened to it the past few weeks concentrating on his vocal and i hear it completely different now. i'd love to hear his version....or, maybe turn stevie's vocal down on the chorus. i know his solo version is on his box set and i actually caught the last minute on the radio about a year ago. kudos to the song...i loved it when it came out and i bought the 45. this song was really what started it for me. i think it's one of her best vocals. sort of reminds me of "baby doll." (or "doesn't matter at all"?) as far as now...i don't like it in the lower key. i think it sounds worse than if she were to sing it in the higher key. it's a catch 22 when singers do this. i generally don't like it. i heard blondie do this with "call me" and something was amiss. that goes for "the chain" too. it changes the whole song. i say just don't it anymore. i mean, why not just rearrange the vocals? easy for me to say! one thing i don't get is how she can sing the crap out of "rock and roll" but not do "stop draggin..." in the higher key. yeah, waddy is no tom petty vocally, but i still tip my hat to him. "well won't you...stop draggin my......heart around....SHE SAYS, WELL I DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD DO THAT AGAIN! I DON'T KNOW! I DON'T KNOW!!! - various RAL performances. |
Stop Draging My Heart Around is a danm good song. I love it, and my favorite live version is definitely her live performance with Sheryl Crow, where she just screws everything up, but its SOOOO good.

I still wish she'd gone with Bella Donna. - Jake |
I really love Tom Petty, the studio version rocks, and I love the video because Stevie is looking at Tom like she's in awe. I remember reading here what Tom said about Stevie when he first met her - "she was a stoned gone fan!" and she looks like she is in the video. The way she's looking at him is "I can't believe I'm singing with TOM PETTY!" It's so cute. I would only want to hear or see her perform it with Tom, though. That song was made for them and I do think it rocks, unlike Leather and Lace. Ugh.

This is one of those songs for me that get boring and repetitive...but when you actually sit down and listen to it again, you realise how awesome it is. I've never heard it live so I can't comment on that, but the album version really rocks!

Me too. Everytime I stick in my music video dvd I think that same exact thing about Stop Draggin. She looks like she is feeling no pain. I really like the hair though. Very cute. |
A damn good song, just like everything on Bella Donna. I especially love the video where she lips the wrong line.

I like it. I would rather it be dropped from the set list though. Only perform it again with Tom.
I love the video. Stevie looks so beautiful. |
