Gypsy83...What???

This is my first post ever...I have been a visitor to The Ledge for awhile but never replied or posted...byt HAD to get some opinions on this.

I know it has been out for a long time, but I just got my copy of Gypsy83 on ebay. Here's what I knew...a girl who loves Stevie, takes a trip across the country with her friend to go to Night of 1000 Stevie's. Ok? Sounded fun.

What did I really get? A ridiculous movie that I felt mocked Stevie as well as her hard core fans. I was SO disapointed. I would NOT recommend this to anyone.

So...was it just me? Was it too DEEP for me to "GET IT?" This has been bugging me...am very interested to hear how others felt about this film.

diamondsnake 07-16-2005 12:53 PM

Worst movie ever!!! The sex scenes were just disgusting, the girl was just plain awful and gave a bad impression of what Stevie fans are. She was just gross... And to top it all off Sara Rue made fun of Stevie on a talk show or something.

Not all Stevie fans are fat goths who can't funtion in the real world. I thought this movie gave Stevie's fanbase a bad name to be quite honest. I'm really glad Stevie did not give the music rights to this trashy flick.

She called Stevie a "has-been".

If Stevie is a "has-been" then Sara Rue is a "never-was"

nwestohiofan 07-16-2005 12:59 PM

Thought it was just me

Glad to hear it wasn't only me. The movie was awful and I agree the sex scenes and nudity were terrible. Stevie fans are generally very cool people...I was lost.

I would LOVE to see a movie/documenatry on Stevie...like 'behind the scenes on tour, etc. Kind of a "Madonna Truth or Dare" type film. Think it would be very interesting.

I had heard about the Sara Rue comments on the talk show...Conan OBrian I think. She really was offensive torward Stevie. TERRIBLE MOVIE!

See I was really mad that people that watch this movie now think that all Stevie fans are these ackward losers.

i can't understand why the guy who made the movie (who apparently is such a big Stevie fan), would produce a movie like that... perhaps he's not a fan like we are, but an NYC Night Of A 1000 Stevies-dress up in drag-kinda fan

nwestohiofan 07-16-2005 01:06 PM

Bad movie

I had also heard that the director was a big fan. I wonder if Stevie ever saw this movie...I sure hope not.

xxxmx 07-16-2005 01:12 PM

i went to the movie premiere in NYC, loved the experience but didn't love the movie at all. todd the director was pretty cool, great Q&A after the screening. FYI i asked if he'd been to NOTS and indeed he had, performed in 2003? and did Sorcerer in full drag. rue never did it for me in the first place, but i definitely think someone else could have made the movie better than what it was. the gypsy/amish sex was way creepy and gross, the rest was alright though IMO. john doe and karen black were great in it, and the scene where she's on the treadmill is pretty priceless.

overall though, i would hate to think that that movie is associated with real stevie-fans. ps - kett is really really really cute in person ;)

i've only recommended it to two people, and that was only because i felt like they should see it to believe it. and for the sake of seeing a movie where stevie nicks is mentioned...

StevieNicksEO17 07-16-2005 01:16 PM

This movie was totally discusting... If you've never seen it, please don't do it. I had to watch it when my parents wern't home so they wern't like "What the hell are you watching?" Very dissapointed.

She was on Craig Kilborn (sp?) and she made a reference to her character as being someone obsessed with a "coked-out old hasbeen".

diamondsnake 07-16-2005 01:19 PM

Sara Rue's boobs should not be viewed on a big screen TV. I'm just warning everyone!!!

I haven't seen the movie so I don't know how it is, but I don't think it's meant to be a descriptive of Stevie's entire fan base, as much as a story of one particular fan. Anyone who goes to Stevie concerts knows that there ARE fans out there who are accentric, or over the top, or whatever you want to call it "fat goths who can't function in the real world" is a little harsh. I mean, the thing that is so great about Stevie fans is that there are so many different kinds, and yet they all seem to be cool and accepting of eachother for the most part. I saw Stevie once and there was a guy in full drag behind me who was singing Bombay Sapphires louder than Stevie (and not well, either). It seems like people who dislike the movie may have had the idea that it would be more about Stevie. I mean, just because a character in a movie is a Stevie fan, does that mean the character is supposed to be likeable because we are also fans? Maybe we weren't supposed to like her?

xxxmx 07-16-2005 01:51 PM

paleshadow: it wasn't intended to portray ALL stevie-fans in the same light, but i really think you need to see the movie. and as for if we're supposed to like her character or not, it's more like the movie sucks than i don't like the character.

and diamondsnake: it's not about how cute/uncute her boobs are, it's the scene in which they are 'unleashed' that is disturbing.

The movie never interested me, so that's why I haven't seen it. I woulnd't go see or rent a movie just because it has a Stevie reference or song in it. I can just come here and read about it from other Ledgies ;) Thanks for your opinion though.

These are make believe characters, what's the big deal if I say that?

I think there needed to be a more grounded character to balance out the more eccentric ones to show that not all Stevie fans are socially unstable. Maybe I wouldn't be so down on the movie if Sara Rue hadn't disrespected Stevie on national TV.

Clearly the scene was not meant to be sensual or sexy but I just found it to be so unnecessary to be that 'in your face'.

See, I think for a successful movie you should be able to find something to like about the main character. Maybe my comments seemed a little harsh but I just can't stand Sara Rue after what she said about Stevie.

Gypsy 83

I read in a review that the movie was modeled after a fan, Susan, who's screen name on AOL was Gypsy83 or Gypsy63 or something. I believe it is Susan Childs, who runs the Destiny Galleria, there is an article on Burnish.net that says:

"Did many Stevie Nicks fans see Gypsy 83 during its film festival days? Oh yeah. The film was kind of inspired by a couple of the hardest-core Stevie fans. Susan Childs makes her living designing Stevie Nicks clothing and selling it on the Internet; other fans donated clothing and served as extras. Pretty much every Stevie Nicks [fan] I talked to has loved the movie. Of course, they wish there was more Stevie music, but the essence of Stevie still shines through. "

I must say, I was also quite disappointed in the film, as most of you say you were. I don't see how this reviewer sees the "essence of Stevie" in that mess, but what do I know?

Ah well..
Hope everyone is having a great weekend...

Some posts seem anti-gay. I KNOW no one means it so I'm not trying to stir the sh** pot here. The deal is that Todd is gay, and makes movies that focus more on a gay lifestyle. Though the focus of the film is on Sara Rue's charachter, IMO, Todd was really trying to portray the film thru her friends eyes. The scene w/ the guy in the bathroom is what I am guessing you are all calling disgusting. Personally, I thought it was heartbreaking. Merley a scratch on the surface of that sort of incident happening a dozen times a day around the world.

Just because Todd is a fan (but perhaps not like "us" as someone said) doesn't mean that he has to make a film titled Gypsy83 about girls twirling on hillsides in faery dust. Each artist has his or her vision. I am guessing that no one has seen his movie "Edge of 17." Beware: It's not about a girl running down the stairs or down a hallway, and breaking a china doll when she sees her brother.

I don't think the film is "OMFG fantastic." but I didn't think it sucked behind either. I am a fan of Todd, simply because he's been able to see his vision come to light, and plus, he's a real nice man. Anyone that would ever care to email him would get a very generous response almost immediately. We've had a few emails back and forth and the guy is real nice. Loves to hear about people's adventures concert hopping. Sara Rue on the other hand can kiss my backside. "Can't act her way out if a wet paper bag" never had more meaning than after having seen G83. As an independent film actress, she can get away w/ her less than admirable acting skills. Big screen, or big break? Forget about it.

Calm down. The bottom line is the movie sucked. At least in my opinion it did.

Why do people have to get so touchy over everything. We are discussing a movie!!! Not real people. And I'm really sorry if I don't sugar coat my posts... I just "play it the way I feel it" to quote my precious Stevie.

I thought the boy's storyline was much better then the girls. And his story/scenes weren't disgusting. I was refering to Gypsy lying on the bathroom floor actually. It just seems unsanitary! Sorry, I have OCD.

LMFAO! And that is OK, cause Oh my lord is that the truth! Yuck! Like when everyone was having a fit bout Brittny Spears walking into a rest area bathroom barefoot. Didn't want to eat for a week! lmao

GypsyBoy87 07-16-2005 06:20 PM

my opinion

as a film maker, the writing, and actuall FILM part of it are pretty good, esp to be so independent, i honestly believe i would have liked the movie alot more if wasnt a fan of stevie at all, i believe the guy who wrote it came up with a story, and then desided, "hmm..my characted needs to be obbsessed with some singer...since stevie has this NOTS thing, lets use her"! , the thing i like least is the way they make stevie fans look, that was a wrong move, but it did help with the whole, trying to be something ur not kind of theme that the movie was focused on ( esp with the boy)

I haven't seen Gypsy 83, it wasn't distributed here and I'm not sure to be interested enough to order it, but I watched Edge Of Seventeen and found his script quite superficial even if enjoyable enough.

it's sara's story that i can't wrap my mind around, her 'scene' seemed poorly directed and could have been a lot more... sanitary? to say the least. (ha, good one diamondsnake)...

as for the nudity, that was completely part of the story. she was so uncomfortable in her own skin, and as soon as she uncovers a bit of herself (quite literally) she gets the rug pulled out from under her feet. though i would have been much happier if there was a rug under her in the movie ;)

IMO this movie was charmless. I am inclined to suspect that the creator is a true fan & a nice guy, but the film did not reach me on any level.

Sahara 07-22-2005 05:52 PM

I must say I was initially disappointed with the movie, but now I've seen it a couple of times ...

At first I was disappointed because of the appalling lack of Stevie Nicks. A single image, I think, and a single song which isn't my favourite anyway. And I must say, Sara Rue's version of 'Talk To Me' didn't really wow me.

Perhaps it was naive of me to expect a movie full of twirling and tambourines and characters sitting around discussing Stevie. Which would have made me happy, but not much good for a plot ... ^,^ I suppose I didn't think of what the plot might be ...
The one exception to that twirling and tambourine thing would be the Doing the Unstuck scene -- which I loved! I liked the openinig sequence, and the scene in the graveyard / church as well for that reason -- its Stevie-ishness! The first act with the two main characters just being themselves with a few Stevie references was what I thought the whole movie might be.

I'm not anti-gay, but as far as a movie about Stevie Nicks fans goes ... there was far too much of it. That was the director's choice, sure, but I felt uncomfortable watching most of it, which isn't a reaction most directors want an audience to feel. Likewise, sex scenes slowed the whole thing down, really didn't think it was necessary to be, as has been said, that 'in your face' about it.

Set design was amazing [especially Clive's bedroom, I really want one!], and costume design the same, if a little inconsistent.

Those of you with the DVD -- the deleted scene of Kett Turton dancing to The Cure in the white room with the black cloth? Loved it, any other opinions?

As a movie it was decent, but as a tribute to Stevie Nicks it wasn't what I expected at all. Disappointed overall.

Rickypt 07-22-2005 06:27 PM

I just saw this movie last week and really liked it. I didn't see it as a movie about Stevie or her fans.

To me, it was a movie about people who don't fit in trying to find a place where they can be more comfortable with themselves. I also thought it was a coming of age movie centered around the boy, as well as exploring the unique relationship that can exist between gay men and straight women.

I thought both sex scenes were very well done and quite authentic. Sara did a great job showing vulnerability and awkwardness. Doing it on the bathroom floor is key to the movie--she's finally with a guy she likes and who shows interest in her, and they are forced to do it there because it's the only opportunity. He's about to bail and doing it there is probably part of this fantasy he was trying to live out before going back home. Once again, she is stepped on and made to feel that she is less than others.

I think the reason there weren't any Stevie songs is because she (or her management) didn't allow them.

And yeah, Sahara, I loved that deleted scene.
