Talk to Me video
Let's talk about this odd video. It needs to be analyzed like a dream.
The main setting is a stark white hall. There are some steps in the middle making one end of the hall higher than the other. On the wall are four windows, two on each side, showing different scenes. The scenes are: a bedroom a seascape a dining room the "candy room" (it looks like there are big peppermints in it) Occasionally the video will cut to Stevie in these different scenes, most often to Stevie sitting on the bedroom floor holding a paper fan, or standing against the seascape in a light blue dress. The other two scenes are only glimpsed. At the beginning, she can be seen sitting and then rising from the table in the dining room. And near the end, she frolics in the "candy room" for a grand total of about two seconds. But the weirdest part is 2:50 into the video, when huge sharp metal bars suddenly appear from above and below, surrounding Stevie like a cage. I believe Stevie has said this is her favorite video, so this weirdness has got to have some meaning. |
I love this video, and I wish we could see more of the candy room! I love the Wonka-ness of that imagery....
I also crack up on that quick cut to Stevie, just when she's kinda shrugging her shoulders and saying "well" - and then they cut to something else for the "must you keep your secrets..." I think she looks gorgeous in that red outfit w/ the red gloves. Her hair is so pretty too. More thoughts later, I'm supposed to be working! |

I love the image of Stevie & her shadow spinning between paintings in a gallery, paintings of her life scenes or aspects of her personality, I always thought.
In a few of the shots (not the ones in the black dress or with the fan) I think she looks like Heather Locklear did in those days. I think this is one of her strongest videos when it comes to lip-sync --- usually she's terrible at it. (I think her worst is I Can't Wait.) - Jake |
Cara Cooke
Whatever happened to Cara Cooke?
I always wanted to see what she looked like outside the video, because she looked so cool and "Stevie-ish" in the candy room...has anyone ever seen photos of her in "real life?" ~Barbara Quote:

Is the a website where this video is uploaded? I havent seen it in a while...

I wish there were more shots of the candy room, too. It looked like she was having a ball in that scene....maybe that was the problem.
"Stevie. We are going to have to cut the candy room out of the video. You looked and acted a little stoned, coked up, and intoxicated." |
It even has a marked path with separated spaces just like the game Candy Land.
|
I would love to see all the raw footage of the candy room....
Is TTM the same video where she's riding the carousel? Or is that IAF? Just another snippet of a video I wish we'd seen more of...she looks GORGEOUS in that too! |
The "seascape" scenes where she's wearing the pale makeup and grey chiffon outfit is one of my all-time faves of her "looks"!!!
|
I presonally think Stevie looks a lil scary in the TTM video. The parts where she is in the red, I find her to look a bit skeleton-ish. Now when she is on the floor in the purplish outfit, I think she looks great. I prefer the world premiere version to the regular one. It has less scary stevie footage.

I love that video. I always thought they were trying to show different faces of Stevie. The red dress seemed very different to me, very sexy too. I remember someone watching the world premiere with me and when they saw her in the red dress they were like, "Oh my god - she's smiling! I've never seen her smile!" I had by thattime a decent size Stevie scrapbook going, so had pics of her smiling, but I guess to someone who wasn't a huge fan, ya, they probably had not been used to seeing pictures of her smiling.
The dining room scene reminded me of that scene in If Anyone Falls where she's at the tall windows (I think that's the video it's in...???). I like that scent a lot too. Like Stevie all alone in her big, empty dining room. Also reminds me of like "the night after" One More Big Time RocknRoll Star - heh! The candles and crystal are all put away, but she's still there, alone, in the dark.... I love the candy land scene. There was just a wee bit more of that in one version I saw. Still not a lot, but just a tiny bit more shown. I always want to see her dress better in that scene. I even had a dream I got married and was in that dress in my dream. In my dream it was so soft and felt so good and was beautiful. Meanwhile, I still don't know what it really looks like. I like the ocean scene - very mediterranean to me, although maybe wasn't meant to be. Her dark eye makeup and the ocean and the shawl, makes me think of gypsies. And I didn't realize it was a bedroom, where she's on the floor. Her hair is all poofed and cool and her outfit looks neat. That scene reminds me of the Gypsy video with her in that room at the beginning of the video. I like them all dancing together - very 80's, very fun though, I think. I like the I Can't Wait video too. As for the bad lup syncing, the people who put together the video should do a better job. At times I am sure she's not singing the whole song all the way through, then someone yells "action" or whatever... they could very easily not use those quick snippets when she's not singing.... They are suppose to edit it well and make it flow. But either way, I love those videos. And the Wild Heart era videos too. I'd love to see pictures of her in all those outfits. In the RAL tour book it was neat to see some I Can't Wait pictures, but I wish they had some Talk to Me ones too...... I want a pic of her in the cotton candy dress!!!! (I call it that because it's in the candy scene....) |

![]() and on that same video I have an interview with Cara Cook talking about the Talk to Me video. If I can find the video it's on, I'll try to post some better quality stills. Luv, Shel |

Cara was just a young girl then. I find she had absolutely nothing to say in that local access TV interview. The only thing we found out was that Cara was ga-ga over Benmont Tench. |
What? That is not Stevie? It sure looks like her.
|
Yes, David, I saw that interview too, not much personality...she didn't look anything like Stevie in that interview, I would have liked to see some outtake photos from the TTM video shoot of her...

Who's Cara?
And she's the one in the candy scene??? :O |

 I would give my right arm to see this. So is it Cara or Stevie? I'm confused. |

Hmm, I'm still pretty sure the twirling clip I have is Stevie, if i remember correctly, you get a decent view of the face. I've looked all over for that video to double check, but I can't find it, so we may never know  |

I can dig out my VHS tape of it & send it to someone to convert it into DVD for people. I probably haven't played the tape in fifteen years, so it should be in pretty good shape. I think I got my copy from Roland. |

I file Cara under the "Where Are They Now?" category. |

First of all, for those interested, I uploaded my copy of TTM onto the 'Net if you'd like to get it.... it's MPEG so it's of pretty good quality. :)
http://s10.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2...J0XRFW0SUM5JTE Now getting down to the matter at hand.... TTM is in my top 3 fave Stevie videos (if not my MOST fave). Stevie just looks absolutely gorgeous in it, and the scenery is pretty awesome as well. I think I'd have to say my favorite "look" in the video was the seascape scene, with the shawl and the big hair. |
That was a classic
I always loved that video. Isn't that really the last video that we see the shawls and dance leotard wear? She pretty much then went to the big skirt and fitted jacket it seems? I can't believe that's not her in the candyland room it really looks like her, with the blonde in the front and brown hair in the back? I just wish the would of showed more of the grey or red and not so much the far away black dancing lol.

I've also heard it referred to as the "Land Of Parasols." |
But there are two versions of this video, right. There is the main one and another that is slightly different.
I have a premiere tape where it's showing for the first time on MTV and it's a different video...I thought?! |
I only just saw this for the first time a few days ago and I love it! She looks HOT in the grey shawl(?) thing. And I've never been a big fan of the twirling but I loved the twirling in the white corridor. I think she looks great in the corridor outfit as well with all the skirt waving (but then again, I loved all the skirt waving in Big Love, too :o )
From the clips I've seen I think this TTM is probably my favourite. I love Stevie's mid to late 80s look! |
How did this young Cara get to film Stevie? And how did she end up getting in the video, if that is her? And why?
If she was a teenager, how can she look so much like an older Stevie? Oy! I am so confused! Was she suppose to be a Stevie-look-a-like or fill-in for the video shoot? You know, where they have someone the same height hang around while the lighting and camera crew get things right before the star comes on the set to actually film?? And if that was the case, why would they use her (Cara's) footage in the video instead of Stevie's? Weird. The music business is definitely weird. |

Johnny, I found my video of the interview. Cara didn't do any scene but the white & blue room, white dress, pinwheel scene. The other "Stevies" in the video are all Stevie. It's plain to see in the rough footage of Cara that she doesn't move the way Stevie moves -- it's easy to distinguish the two when you watch extended footage of Cara. It's just that in the video, the clips of her are so short. |
yes, I believe it is Cara after noticing how she throws her head back on the image projected on the wall. Having been beheaded in a previous life, Stevie is incapable of doing that.
|
Yeah -- there were two versions of the video. One that they world-premeired on MTV and then about 3 days later they replaced that video with the current version. The original version started out way too much like Gypsy... images of scarfs and stuff and the mirror in the bedroom -- it did have some different cuts later on int he video -- and even some other "projected" images of couples dancing again the "big white hall". It's fun to compare the two versions.

Thanks for clearing it up, David! "Talk To Me," both the song and the video, will always have a special place in my heart. |
