Bands you like....But maybe shouldn't....

I got the weirdest look at work when Ace of Base came on the system and I said I liked them. (The fact I knew who they were got the looks I think). Who do you like that gets a double take?

skcin 07-14-2005 11:46 AM

ABBA

Neil Diamond

Milli Vanilli before the scandal

wondergirl9847 07-14-2005 11:54 AM

Me too..

I like Ace of Base....have their first album. I'm not ashamed of any bands/singers I like. I get weird looks for liking FM, The Monkees, boy bands and Justin Guarini. I wore this N'Sync shirt the other day and got some double-takes. LOL It's a cute shirt with them as cartoons.

Whatevah.

Pisces Queen 07-14-2005 11:56 AM

I know there are many Brittany Spears haters but damn I love her. Not so much her but her last album is still in my CD player.

wondergirl9847 07-14-2005 12:07 PM

Lol

I like some Britney tunes, with Stronger being a fave. I only own her first album, no GH or anything. I will probably go get Stronger and a few others off iTunes since I have some credit.

Don't care for her as a person, especially after her marriage to Cletus, but some of her songs are pretty fun. I did hear some of her "singing" on the radio after some HBO special or something and YOWZA...stick to the lip-synching, PLEASE.

DrummerDeanna 07-14-2005 12:07 PM

I am guilty of keeping Ace of Base on the radio when they come on :p

Lets see...I get weird looks for:

Dolly Parton - why? She is awesome!!!

HomerMcvie 07-14-2005 12:26 PM

Hall and Oates
Journey
Restless Heart

chiliD 07-14-2005 12:29 PM

70's "Progressive Rock" bands (such as: ELP, Yes, King Crimson I, Gentle Giant, Nektar, Synergy, Triumvirat, PFM, early Genesis, Procol Harum, etc)

catinthedark 07-14-2005 12:43 PM

Just last night... out with some friends.. and Kelly Clarkson came on. "My guilty pleasure," I said. The whole table went quiet.

But I confess... also to liking N'Synch and the Backstreet Boys.

skcin 07-14-2005 12:53 PM

^ LOVE Kelly Clarkson!

Backstreet & N Sync not so much

My girlfriend in HS loved Neil Diamond. We always made fun of her, and told her only 40yo HOUSEWIVES listen to Neil!

dissention 07-14-2005 12:59 PM

White Stripes. Gawd, they're bad, but some of their stuff is addicting.

I got weird looks when I bought Loretta Lynn's last album last year, and every time I browse the country section, I can see people staring at me as if I'm pissing on the CDs. I get laughs when someone is with me and I play Bette Midler in my car. Don't know why they laugh, I'm usually playing The Rose soundtrack and it kicks ass.

I never got the memo either.

Can't wait to see him in August!

amber 07-14-2005 01:00 PM

well, i tend to be steeped in deep shame whenever any of the classic stadium rock guys come on and I have to sing. But - I submit - The wheel in the sky does keep on turnin, and that's more than a feeling, guys - more than a feeling. :D

My grandmother was a Diamond fanatic. She didn't like music very much, but when it came to Diamond, she was as passionate as some of these Stevie fans. She was the same way with Midler. I still have all of her memorbilia in a box somewhere, it was truly insane.

estranged4life 07-14-2005 01:10 PM

Hmmm...

The Bee Gees (Don't give a ****, A good song is a good song is a good song!!!)

Three Dog Night

ABBA

The B-52's

Janet 07-14-2005 01:12 PM

Oh most to what I listen to.

Um, FM would be considered a guilty pleasure really. I tell the younger, hip kids that I like FM and they are like, THEY SUCK.

But I love ABBA, Ace of Base, Journey, Styx and sooooo many more. Like Amber said, I love those stadium rock bands from the 70's, early 80's.

trackaghost 07-14-2005 01:48 PM

Neil Diamond is also my guilty pleasure.

Christina Aguilera (I have no idea why...)
Chumbawamba (WOOO TUBTHUMPING!)
Destiny's Child (Stevie's shows got me addicted to Bootylicious)
Savage Garden
Wilson Phillips

There is my list of shame.

DITTO! United Center in August. WOOT! (suck it, Greg!#*@)($)

Today, I was in Wal-Mart and had to force myself to put down the Keith Urban album I was about to buy. For some that might not be a big deal- he IS talented, believe me, I know- but if anyone saw me with that? They'd be shocked. My shame was reinforced when I got back in the car and my changer switched from Belle and Sebastian to Kings of Convenience.

Anyhow, for the most part, I'm ashamed of nothing. Neil, Fleetwood Mac, my obsession with old school country, etc.

dudden22 07-14-2005 02:03 PM

For a song I get weird looks for liking Kenny Roger's The Gambler I love it even though I loathe country music.

Neil Diamond and Carly Simon for performers

Wild_Heart03 07-14-2005 02:04 PM

I can shamelessly say that I love Ace of Base AND *N Sync!

As a matter of fact, *N Sync was my first concert in 1999.

estranged4life 07-14-2005 02:05 PM

Shouldve bought it...

(The Keith Urban disc, Which one was it "Be Here" or "Golden Road"?) I am very sure you wouldnt be disappointed.

estranged4life 07-14-2005 02:08 PM

but I am from a metal/hard rock musical background, Where anything considered new-wave is severely shunned both most in the metal masses...Oh well, Their loss I guess (Btw, Deb's the one that got me into the B-52s.)

I'm not that familar with Keith Urban, but his perfect hair and stubble immediately puts me off him. :sorry:

Neil Diamond's sequined shirts though, are so uncool they actually go full circle and become cool again.

Ah, I see (said the blind man...)

I once upon a time owned a Maiden album. Yes it's true. And I had a leather jacket too

CreepingDeath 07-14-2005 02:19 PM

My hall of shame:

Bon Jovi :o
Motely Crue (older stuff)
Journey
Duran Duran
The Scorpions

It was "Be Here" because of my monster affection for "You're My Better Half."

I know his music is great for what it is. I just... listening to old school country was a big step for me, and although now it's my favorite genre- I have a hard time coming to terms with new country. Although I do love Gretchen.

the 1985 "Live After Death" double vinyl, Which I kept in immaculate condition (Still have the original full-sized tour booklet that came with that album).

Hell, Growing up I had my bedroom from floor-boards to ceiling completely covered in Iron Maiden memorabilia (Even the ceiling as covered), I still own a bit of that stuff for nostalgic reasons.

his music IMHO is more rock than actually country...I dont consider him "new-country" at all. He is primed for a major crossover to rock (His concerts are "rock shows", plain/pure and simple...I'm sure Wondergirl/Christy will concur with me, I kinda turned her on to KU awhiles back.)

Little bit of lovin' on the Mason Dixon line......
I've seen Alabama 4 times, and Restless Heart twice. RH are SUCH a talented band! If Larry Stewart only hadn't gotten the big head, and jumped ship at their peak. He's back now, of course. The band now tells a story about his solo career, then says, "now, we're going to do Larry's medley of hit!" Get it, singular!

I remember Larry's song, but I can't think of the name. It must not have been very good. :)

"Alright Already". His first three solo albums were good. The fourth one though, he got with Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross), who tried to turn him into adult contemporary. That's when he came back to Restless Heart. Their sound is still incredible. All you Ledgies wanna hear some REAL harmonies, check out Restless Heart's 5 part harmonies. Put's our beloved Mac's harmonies to shame.

Oh, yeah. I think I remember the video - wasn't he playing guitar on a bed or something?

I was really into country groups for awhile. Restless Heart, Alabama, Sawyer Brown, etc.

Me too, I had a huge absence from FM. From about 1990-2000. Restless Heart and Alabama were played daily! OH! I forgot about Diamond Rio! But it seems like the country bands(much like FM) have been replaced by all the pretty bands(Urban,Rascal Flatts{I can't stand RF} etc)....
