Ever not recognize Stevie's voice?
Or... would I ask this about Bob Dylan?
I listened to Nashville Skyline today and remembered when I first heard Lay Lady Lay, I didn't recognize it as Dylan for a second because his voice had "changed" on/for that album. (In my defense, Nashville Skyline was released before I was born!) Has anyone every heard a Stevie tune for the first time and not recognized her voice? I never have, but just wondering... I'm not nearly as familiar with her solo stuff as everyone else here is, so I am wondering if she ever changed her singing style dramatically on any song so much that it wouldn't be instantly recognizable as Stevie. |

When I was a kid I never realized that she was singing backup on "Magnet and Steel," but I was convinced she was singing backup on Eric Clapton's "Lay Down Sally." In 1983 I was really anxiously awaiting the release of "The Wild Heart," so I remembered catching the end of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" on the radio and thinking that was the new song by Mama Nicks! It's that part where Annie is just vamping, "Oh-oh, aah ah ah ah." Even now I think it's rather Nicksian. |
No, but I was shocked as hell when I heard Every Day on the radio. She sounded so nasally to me at first.

Never, but there have been times where I've stopped to listen closely because I thought somebody else was Stevie. Usually it was because the vocal volume was low, and Stevie's radio songs - notably Sara - often have that quality.

Never. In fact, I've been in really noisy places, and heard only faint notes of a song, and said, that's Stevie Nicks. Even if I haven't known the song. Her voice has always been very, very identifiable to me. First time I heard Whenever I Call You Friend, I nearly flipped out, cause I had no idea she had sung on any other duets that L&L and SDMHA (this was many eons ago, when I had just discovered Stevie), and I was sooooooo sure it was her. It took some research (before the age of internet) and I was so thrilled when I found out it WAS her. Same with when I heard Gold and Midnight Wind. When I was a teen and still living at home (ah, those were the days), I used to go to sleep with my radio on, and I actually used to wake up whenever a Stevie song came on. Talk about my ear being tuned in to her voice. Was very weird.

Can you tell I'm a total wet-behind-the-ears green newbie? (And I've been listening to her since 2001 or 2002.) Man, have I been asleep at the wheel...http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...s2/redface.gif |
I had heard Everyday before I purchased TISL. I remember really liking that song on the radio and then when I got the TISL album I was so excited that Everyday was on the record and Stevie had sung it.

Only once--the first time I heard "I Can't Wait". I actually did think it was Stevie but not 100% sure--I had to call the radio station up to be sure! I've always been good at hearing her harmony & background vocals in other songs and I'm still totally convinced she's on Tom Petty's "Dont' Come Around Here No More".

Nope...that was Marcy Levy. :D Who later changed her name to Marcella Detroit and formed a duo with ex-Bananarama'er Siobhan Fahey called "Shakespeare's Sister". |
It only happens to me with background music at the store or something. Some of you will want to slap me for saying this, but I agree with Tom Petty that almost all of the music that came out in the 80's was crap. In contrast, everything put out in the 70's is WONDERFUL. I hate that computerized crap. So, I missed most 80's music because I refused to listen. (yes - my mind is that open)
I even missed most Fleetwood Mac stuff from those years too. So, one day, only about three or four years ago, in the grocery store I hear, "Little Lies" and I instantly know that it is Christine, and then I try to listen carefully and I think I hear Stevie, but I wasn't sure until the song was almost over. I also had a delayed Stevie reaction to "Seven Wonders". I thought it was her, then I thought no, then yes. It was. Patty |

I'm pretty sure. lol I hope so... 'cause that's the only reason I listen to it. You can hardly hear her though. |

.. that could explain the reason why you weren't sure |

The first time I heard WICYF I was yelling to my boyfriend "That is Stevie Nicks" but I had to run upstairs to check on the net. I came down and he was like "well duh". The first time I heard "Gold" I KNEW but it took me going home to get Enchanted to prove it!
Other than that, on FM or solo stuff, I always know. Its too recognisable a voice to miss! ~Nicki |
I don't think I've ever not recognized her voice......I remember arguing with a friend when Whenever I Call You Friend was popular and on the radio a lot---she was convinced that it wasn't Stevie--I of course proved her wrong  :)

I was just over at the Nicksfix and saw that Stevie sung backing vocals on Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me"! One of my favorite songs, and I never even knew...

Gold and Magnet and Steel
The metals must have thrown me off

I don't think I've ever been confused about her voice, but I have heard some people thinking Bonnie Tyler is Stevie (Total Eclipse of the Heart, etc), which is jus' silly!

I don't think there has ever been a time that I didn't recognize Stevie's voice. It is sooo distinctive that I know it right off. It's so unique; that is one of the reasons I love her voice.

Whenever I Call You Friend and Magnet and Steel.
I had no clue until Enchanted for WICYF, and about 2 years ago I learned about Magnet and Steel. Now, I can't believe I didn't recognize her voice before. |

I think in Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" it sounds like Stevie singing that line. Sometimes I wonder if they made it sound like her on purpose. |

You're probably not going to beleive this but the first time 20 some odd years ago when I heard SDMHA, I didn't know it was Stevie.
|
*uncomfortable cough* Say You Will was the first album I heard and ... for a ridiculously long time I always thought it was Stevie singing the chorus on 'Come' ....
Tells you more about Lindsey's voice than hers really, or maybe just my ears, but there you go .... *sheepish smile* :sorry: |
