London Bombers were British

Detectives now believe the London bombings were carried out by four British-born men in what were possibly the country's first suicide attacks.

Security sources said it was likely at least three of the men, said to be of Pakistani descent, are dead, after belongings were found at the scenes.

The details emerged as explosives were found in Leeds and Luton after a series of raids. One man has been arrested.

The BBC's Frank Gardner said an expert may have offered the bombers guidance.

The security correspondent said the suspected bombers - one of whom is thought to have been as young as 19 - may have been helped by someone who would have left the country before the bombs went off.

Police revealed details of the breakthrough in their investigation into the attacks, which killed at least 52 people, on Tuesday.

It emerged that relatives of one of the men had reported him missing last Thursday morning.

On Monday night, police had viewed CCTV footage of four suspects together at London King's Cross last Thursday.

They all had rucksacks and were seen just 20 minutes before the three Tube bombs started going off at 0851 BST. A bus bomb went off in Tavistock Square at 0947 BST.

Three of the men had travelled to Luton from Leeds by train, before catching a Thameslink train to London. They had been joined at Luton by a fourth man who had driven to the Bedfordshire town.

Tuesday's police raids, which began at 0630 BST, centred on two properties in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and four in Leeds.

Police said they had arrested a relative of one of the four suspects in Yorkshire and taken them to London for questioning.

Explosives were also found in a car at Luton railway station, where experts have carried out seven controlled explosions, with three more expected to follow.

A second car believed to be linked to the attacks was also found at the station and towed to Leighton Buzzard, 10 miles (16km) west of Luton, for further examination.

Sir Iqbal Sacranie, of the Muslim Council of Britain, said it had received news of the suspects with "anguish, shock and horror".

He said: "It appears our youth have been involved in last week's horrific bombings against innocent people.

"While the police investigation continues we reiterate our absolute commitment and resolve to helping the police bring to justice all involved in this crime of mass murder. Nothing in Islam can ever justify the evil actions of the bombers."

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said the searches, carried out under the Anti-Terrorism Act, were intelligence-led and "directly connected" to last week's attacks.

Head of the Metropolitan Police anti-terrorist branch Peter Clarke said documents identifying three of the men were found near three blast sites.

But there is no identity for the fourth bomber and police do not know if his remains are at the King's Cross blast site or if he has fled.

Three of the four men were from the West Yorkshire area, said Mr Clarke.

His colleague, assistant commissioner Andy Hayman, said: "I want to conclude by making it absolutely clear that no-one should be in any doubt the work last Thursday is that of extremists and criminals.

"No-one should smear or stigmatise any community with these acts."

Following developments on Tuesday he described the investigation as "complex and intensive" and "moving at great speed".

Police said there was forensic evidence that one of the bombers died in the Aldgate Tube explosion.

Property belonging to one of the suspects from West Yorkshire, who was reported missing by his family just after 1000 BST on Thursday, was also found on the devastated bus.

A third man's property was found at both the Aldgate and Edgware Road blasts.

Mr Clarke said: "We are trying to establish their movements in the run up to last week's attacks and specifically to establish if they all died in the explosions."

Eleven victims of the blasts have now been formally identified.

Eight inquests will be opened on Wednesday, including those of Londoners Jamie Gordon, 30, and Phillip Russell, 29.

Police are asking for anyone with information on the bombs to contact their anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.

That is such a shame. I wonder why Al-Qaeda was taking responsibility for it then?

That is what sucks big time. Some of the British people getting involved with those nutcases...I hate that.

irishgrl 07-13-2005 08:20 AM

if it turns out they worked alone, the only reason I can think of for Al Qaeda to claim responsibility is to increase the fear factor associated with their group.

I see the police there are not ruling out outside help, and it certainly looks as tho these men had instructions from elsewhere, but from what I've read, the Muslim leaders in Leeds are shocked at this development, they say there have been no anti-Britain sentiments at their mosques....I think Muslims everywhere need to wake up and realize that they will all be tarred with the same brush unless they do what they can to neutralize these wackos...in fact, I think the only real hope for battling this issue lies with the Muslims themselves, those Moderates who hate what the radicals are doing should become hyper alert for unusual behavior or furtive actions or visits to "empty" buildings

I imagine I'll get flamed for this but I stand by it.

Counter intelligence on the part of some interested third party? Just a theory on my part, of course.

FU'd if ya ask me, Makes ya wonder how long before the same type of thing happens here on this side of the Big Pond.

American born terrorists have killed before here in our own country, So I don't see it as being a remote and isolated problem...And remember the last American bred terrorists were white, So anything is possible.

On a related subject is that the Uni-bomber (Does anyone remember the Uni-bomber police sketches? Looks very similar) on trackie's avatar or the Uni-Lindsey?

Anyone read this? A strong stomach is required, so consider yourself warned. Nevermind that the silly twat doesn't even interpret what Fonda says correctly.

How Jane Fonda and the BBC put you in danger: that is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,162242,00.html

As you may know, I was in Europe last week. And whenever the discussion turned to Iraq, it was not about deposing Saddam's brutal regime, or about allowing millions of Iraqis to vote for the first time in decades, or about the terrorist Zarqawi (search) beheading civilians and blowing up women and children.

No, on the telly, Iraq was all about Abu Ghraib (search) and Guantanamo Bay (search). Thank you, left-wing media.

The anti-Bush press and the people who aid them have greatly succeed in turning the war on terror into a "bash America" fest. You have to hand it to those people. They are effective.

But that was before the London terror attack. Will things change now? Don't count on it. That's because media like the BBC won't stop at spin. While in Ireland, I watched in amazement as a BBC interviewer named Gavin Essler baited an incredibly dim Jane Fonda into putting the worst possible face on her country.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GAVIN ESSLER, BBC: But is it like the Vietnam days in the sense that — is it even worse than the Vietnam days in some ways— because people around the world don't think that the Bush administration is telling the truth about why they went to war and what the consequences of war in Iraq might be?

JANE FONDA, ACTRESS: I don't know about better or worse than Vietnam. Externally, I'm not sure it's worse than Vietnam. We were being so severely criticized around the world because of the war in Vietnam, which is one of the reasons that it ended, because of world opinion.

But I think that the situation inside the United States right now is worse than then. It's really scary.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

What is really scary is that millions of people all over the world believe what Miss Fonda is saying. They believe the USA is going through another Vietnam-like upheaval, which is far from the truth.

Most Americans are solidly behind the War on Terror. And even the division on Iraq is based on performance, rather than ideology.

The big problem with all this America bashing is that it makes it almost impossible for the USA to get a fair hearing on terror strategy. We've been stigmatized. Anything we do to hunt down the true evil-doers is either suspect or rejected out of hand.

Once again, "Talking Points" urges all Americans to understand that people like Jane Fonda (search) do damage to the country, even though the woman probably doesn't realize it. The only way to defeat worldwide terrorism is for the world to unite against it and overcome differences in support of that greater good.

Maybe the London killings will help in that effort. What say you, BBC? And that's "The Memo."

estranged4life 07-13-2005 02:31 PM

I remember saying...

the whole War on Terror is the second installment of a Vietnam era type of war....It will get bloodier/deadlier before it will ever get better.

As for O'Really's Dip**** point memo & Hanoi Jane, F**k 'em!

It pisses me off to see again, the entire race/religion being grouped together in responsibility which only serves to increase hatred.

AGAIN, Lux, you misunderstand. Although, I expected as much from YOU.
What I SAID was, I believe it is the Muslims themselves who can be most effective in stopping this sort of activity, they are, after all, living in close proximity to these radicals. Unless they DO take a stand against these radicals, they run the risk of being tarred with the same brush. If they are not part of the solution, then they are part of the problem. America, Britain and Europe mean well, and have made some headway, but in the end, I believe it will be the Muslims themselves (the Moderates and those who abhore the way the radicals have hijacked their religion) who can be most effective. As for promoting hatred, you do quite well enuff on your own.

one cant help but wonder what your reaction would be if Muslims in your midst blew up one of your precious landmarks or transit systems? A neighbor or friend maybe? they sure as hell dont wear a sign that says, HI! Im your friendly neighborhood suicide bomber!

irishgrl 07-13-2005 07:35 PM

Lookie here Lux, Prince Charles agrees with me

Quote:

Muslims must 'root out' those who spread hate: Prince Charles

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's heir to the throne
Prince Charles has called on all Muslims to help "root out" those in their community who preach hatred.

It is the "duty of every true Muslim" to condemn last week's suicide bombings in London which killed at least 52 people, Charles said in Thursday's edition of the Daily Mirror newspaper.

According to newspapers, the four bombers, three of whom have been named, were British Muslims of Pakistani origin.

Muslims in the country must "root out those among them who preach and practise such hatred and bitterness", wrote Charles.

A "deeply evil influence" must have been brought to bear on the "impressionable young minds" of the bombers, the prince wrote.

However, he stressed that Islam was not the cause of the terrorism and that most Muslims had condemned the attacks.

"Some may think this cause is Islam. It is anything but. It is a perversion of traditional Islam," he said.

He added: "Those who claim to have murdered in the name of Islam have no care for the lives they have so brutally destroyed.

"Offended by the good relations between faiths and cultures, the extremists seek to break up the communities that make up our modern, multi-cultural society."

Speaking in parliament earlier Wednesday, Prime Minister
Tony Blair said his government would begin talks with British Muslim leaders about combating the "poisonous and perverted misinterpretation of the religion of Islam" which prompted the attacks.
as I said, the only real way to combat Muslim extremists, is to enlist the help of the non-extremist Muslims, for without them, we cannot win. And if they dont step up, we are all targets, and this entire world will be engulfed in anarchy. New York, Spain, London, Iraq, Israel, and more: all these places are merely feeling the tip of the iceberg, IMO.

Propaganda. Why can't people see it? Just because Murdoch and Co. occasionally print or braodcast a factual story doesn't mean the rest of it isn't pure bull****.
This is a nice cheap piece probably designed to take the heat off Karl, or the war, or the national debt, Guantanamo...all the things they don't want you to pay attention to. :distress:

Exactly. Poll people on the street and I'd be willing to bet more people know who Fonda is than Karl Rove. Tossing her out there was done for the sole reason of taking the heat off of everything else, however momentarily, for the Republican thugs who watch Faux News, as if she was still out there posing with anti-aircraft weaponery. Silly twats. The digs at the BBC were in such poor taste that I can't find the right words to express it.

I often wonder if the only reason Faux prints or broadcasts some factual stuff is becuase if they didn't, then couldn't they theoretically lose their FCC licenses for not acting in the public good? I'm serious.

They're either really dumb or actually evil themselves. I found that piece upsetting, though I know I was warned, I had to read anyway. It is true that most Americans are behind the war on terror but most are NOT behind the war in Iraq because the two are unrelated despite claims to the contrary. Are they so dumb they cannot make these distinctions?

Whenever I try to understand the O'Reilleys of America I just get frustrated and upset. I think it is healthier for me to just say they're wrong and that's it. Trying to understand them is futile because they're just wrong. I feel like one day people will wake up and say, "You were right all along." I hope they do. Eventually the truth will come out, I do believe that, I just wish it would be sooner rather than later.

I'm very scared for this country and our future. This type of corruption is like termites and could bring it all down. I do not understand why people don't see that.

What I don't understand is exactly what is the war on "terra"? What are we doing about it? Where is Osama? Osama worked for the CIA at one point. Are we the war on "terra"? There are so many blurred lines here. While I think the American public is begining to tire of Iraq, I think some of them are confused that it is the war on "terra". I believe that is exactly what the administration wants.
Now Britain is no stranger to terrorism, with it's troubles with the IRA. But this situation is far worse, IMO. It is only exaggerated by the US Middle East policy and Britain's involvement in the Iraq war.
Oh what a tangled web we weave.
