Christines Best - Behind the Mask Tour

On the video I have of the Behind the Mask tour, I feel that Christine was the star of this show. First off she looks absoltuley amazing and very thin as always. She seemed to be more of a star on these shows. She had a lot more interaction with the audience and took a lot of gifts from the audience. She also was on the stage a lot more for these shows IMO. On World Turning I loved seeing her on Micks drum kit jamming along with the rest of the band. Her version of Everywhere from this tour was astounding and she got a huge response from it. I loved hearing Save Me live. I thought she transferred it well to the stage. Too bad Skies the Limit never made it live, but oh well. I think this was also the one and only tour where Christine actually did a keyboard solo.

Best Christine Tour Ever!

The PICTURE of the BTM band is on that Brazilian guy's MIRAGE DVD that he sells on eBay. I'm fairly certain there was no BTM video.......or was there? Although I bought BTM the day it came out, I was pretty much out of the FM loop at that point in my life.

Christine was a happening lady on the 1990 tour. I totally agree. The earlier in the tour you can get videos of, the better. Las Vegas is a good video -- that's from June 10 or something.

I saw the June 1 show at Cal Expo in Sacramento & the Mountain View show a few days later. They played "Save Me" & "When the Sun Goes Down" on both nights. Chris played her accordeon on "When the Sun Goes Down." I also saw the Oakland show at the end of the tour, in December, but that was deadly dull for the most part. Still, Christine was fine that night.

I assume you mean the brief solo on "Stop Messin' Round"? But she solo'd a bit on earlier tours, too, like on "Don't Stop" & on "Get Like You Used to Be." In fact, she played essentially the same blues licks on all of them. (Notice how they're all shuffles?)

You shoulda been at the Forum the last night of the tour...it ROCKED!!

SteveMacD 07-11-2005 03:50 PM

Yeah, with Lindsey B. joining them for a few songs!

Actually, my favorite part of that tour was Christine's solos on "Stop Messin' Round." Just great to hear her show everybody she could REALLY play the piano!

I have a video of that show, at least through "Stand Back". I think Christine was the star of the show on both the Tango & BTM tours.

I never knew they did "When The Sun Goes Down"live, except for that rehearsal. And, I never knew that she played accordian on anything but "Tusk".

I am still in search of the Las Vegas video. Stevie did so much better near the beginning of that tour before all the weight gain near the end. I have When the Sun Goes Down Live and I liked it a lot. Of Course save me is always great love. Stop Messin Around was the most noticeable solo to me because it sounds different to me every version I hear unlike all the endings of Don't Stop from 77-82 where they all sound the same.

I HAD the last show on video with LB all the way through Stand Back and that was great.

Yeah, he was there in Oakland, too. It was still a snooze. He didn't know what the heck to do or how to act, & everyone else onstage was so zonked & so robotic that no attempt was made to treat him like an actual guest star.

It was all so bizarre & so aesthetically unsatisfying. It was logy & exhausting, right from the start. It combined all the worst aspects of the '87/'88 tour & the earlier part of the '90 tour with none of the best aspects.

Even the great Steve Pond said that it was the sort of thing one really couldn't get nostalgic about. Steve Pond is my idol, man. The dude just cooks.

My friend Bill said the same thing. He has seen the Mac numerous times thru the years. he said the Tusk tour was the best, then rumours tour, then the The Dance, and then the Tango tour. He missed out on the 76' tour and the Mirage tour.....That's his opinion though of course.

macmar71 07-12-2005 07:39 PM

I think she was great on the Tango tour too! She was really the high point for me at the show.

jbrownsjr 07-13-2005 05:52 PM

Christine was amazing this tour. She was definitely the leader on this one. I saw the Cleveland show and it was full of energy.

Well, in light of all of the events surrounding that tour, I could see why it would have gotten to that point. Christine's dad died during the tour, and she and Stevie both announced that this was going to be their last with the band. And, there was controversy about Mick's book. I remember one article in which he was contemplating using a second jet, as some folks in the band, mostly the girls, weren't very happy about the notion of a tell-all. I'm sure that by the end of that tour, EVERYBODY just wanted it all to be over. I don't think that Lindsey could have done anything to help that situation. That being said, I LOVED that version of GYOW, as you well know!

If they were driving each other crazy on the tour then why did they come back and do another leg in the US?

Yes thats a good reason too. They sold out a lot of arenas on that tour even tho the album pretty much flopped. A favorite tour of mine for sure.

Why would Chris & Stevie be mad about Mick's book? They both were depicted in that book VERY favorably. Now the guys, that's another story-especially Lindsey & even John did NOT end up looking very good, according to Mick.

I think it was the principle of it. Stevie's affair w/ Mick went public and Christine really backed Stevie on this. I remember Christine saying that what happened behind closed doors was their only moments of privacy that they had left and Mick sort of took that away.

Very true. I mean, Fmac certainly had their dirty laundry aired, but it must sort of hurt when it's aired by 'one of the five'. Although in Mick's defense he must have literally hundreds of stories he could have told, and he only picked a few.

BTW did Chris say that 'behind closed doors' quote in a written or spoken interview? I've never heard that. which upsets me greatly LOL.

Do you happen to have it anywhere or know where it's from?

OK, I see what you mean. I'd never heard that Christine quote about Mick's book either, which annoys me too ;). I've never, ever heard her say anything about that book. Stevie, Lindsey & John, yes; Christine, no.

If there were such bad feelings about the book, then why were they mentioning the book during the shows on the BTM tour?

jbrownsjr 07-14-2005 11:50 AM

I remember reading it in our local paper. I think it was Scene Magazine. But it was long ago. And it wasn't a "quote/unquote" just the jist of what she said.

I remember Stevie somewhat jokingly introducing Mick at the Oakland Coliseum show as a New York Times best-selling author (the book was on the best-seller list).

I think if Fleetwood Mac members were unhappy about the book's existence, by the time of the end of the tour, they had all pretty much resigned themselves to that, figuring it wasn't going to go away.

But all these sociological concerns don't really explain what I witnessed in Oakland: a bored, uncommitted band that overrelied on arena-rock conventions & cliches. It was definitely time to wrap up the tour (which, to be fair, was a loooong one -- about ten months).

I do, indeed, pal! You sure do like your GYOW with plenty of hardware behind it!

Actually, I think the Rocky Vito/Bobby Burnette performances of GYOW on both the world tours were anthemic & fun & very, very tuneful -- the choruses were vocally full-bodied & bracing, akin to the studio version.

I used to get slightly annoyed with the throwaway quality that Buckingham, Nicks & McVie gave the chorus during the earlier touring years, with each of them singing a harmony inappropriate to his or her voice box & all of them singing off-key.

No kidding! I've been listening to alot of boots and rehearsals lately, and I'm AMAZED at how crappy the choruses sound. Almost seems like they're trading parts on a nightly basis, unsure of which part is their own. Sloppy, IMO.

thank goodness someone else noticed it!

Yeah one thing i noticed about Dance vs Mirage is everyone knew their parts.

I'll still take Mirage type concert any day of the week...

Yah the chorus really sucks now on GYOW. But I do agree that Billy and Rick did a good job on GYOW for both tours I enjoyed it. Stevie took a lot more gifts on these tours. SO did christine actually.

PenguinHead 07-15-2005 02:05 AM

I'm surprised to find out that "When The Sun Goes Down" was actually performed in concert (and not just in rehearsal). Are any boots of those shows available?

It makes perfect sense why Christine was most definately the leader of the band on the Behind The Mask tour, especially in the absence of Lindsey. Rick & Billy were the newbies, and Stevie was in La La Land.

jbrownsjr 07-15-2005 11:40 AM

Anybody have a good boot of this show? I'll buy

I know it is cirrculating on the June 1, 1990 Sacramento California Audio. Although the show is cut, "when the sun goes down" is included.
