Bands/Singers You Used To Hate, But Now You Love

When I was in my early teens, I absolutely despised John Mellencamp and Dire Straits. I liked two Mellencamp songs ("Ain't Even Done With The Night" & "Rain On The Scarecrow") and one Dire Straits song ("So Far Away"), but thought the rest of their material was just the pits.

These days I love them both, and can't figure out for the life of me why it was that I didn't like them (maybe they were overplayed?).

Are there any singers or bands that you just couldn't stand at some point in time, but that you're now a fan of?

mylittledemon 07-06-2005 10:14 PM

Aerosmith, Green Day, Weezer, Madonna (Gasp!), Morrissey, AC/DC

And I've always liked Mellencamp and Dire straits! haha....Aint Even Done with the Night is a brilliant song.

Isn't it though?
That song always make me... uhm... amorous. :o

I'm the worst gay guy ever. I only know maybe one Erasure song. :o

I dig the Pet Shop Boys though. It was their collaboration with Dusty Springfield that did it for me. LOVE that song. Even own the 12" maxi-single. :D

Oh, yeah, I forgot, Pet Shop Boys were good, too. It's just, at the time, i didn't like synth. You know, growing up on Classic Rock and all that, I thought synth was stupid. which is why I liked the Mellen and the Straights....I've rescinded my previous "synth is bad" stance, though. I kind of like Duran Duran, too. Erasure is the bomb. Everything is peppy and melodic.

GateandGarden 07-06-2005 10:28 PM

I can't really think of anyone. I think there are a lot more bands and solo acts that I used to think were great but either don't care for or dislike at this point. (Hint Hint for a spin-off thread idea)

CreepingDeath 07-06-2005 10:35 PM

I used to not like Dire Straits either.

Others:

Dream Theater -I used to loathe LaBrie's vocals.

Keith Urban -I didn't really even give him a chance initially because he was labeled as "country".

Duran Duran -They're pretty corny, but I love 'em.

Depeche Mode

Honestly...still havent gotten into the Zep...never have. Just not my cup of tea. Never really liked The Who either. I know that's sacrilege amongts musicians but...hey...whatever.

dissention 07-06-2005 10:40 PM

Country. I used to loathe country, everything about it. Then I came to my senses and realized that Garth Brooks and Reba are not true country; Dolly, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, and Emmylou Harris are. I'm a huge fan of those three and years ago, I never would have given them the time of day. When I was fifteen or sixteen, I got a copy of Emmylou's Wrecking Ball album and that changed my outlook on the genre and the real country artists, not the crap they foist on us as country via Shania and Faith Hill.

mylittledemon 07-06-2005 10:40 PM

Ps. dont hate me Lux for my non-love of the Led.

estranged4life 07-06-2005 10:42 PM

Hmmm...

Led Zeppelin, Never understood the hub-bub about 'em when I was in my late teens/early 20's until I took a chance and bought myself a Christmas present which was the BEST boxed set ever released, the Led Zeppelin boxed set from 1990....Been hooked ever since.

Other than Led Zep if I never like a band/musician I very much doubt I ever will grow to like 'em (And YES, I do give all types of music a listen...So I, at the LEAST, give 'em a listen.)

xdreamsunwindx 07-06-2005 10:59 PM

I used to hate Hole. Same with Garbage. They're now two of my all-time favorites. :D

Wild_Heart03 07-06-2005 11:11 PM

I used to HATE Aerosmith when I was younger, I thought they were so overrated. I've grown to love a lot of their stuff now, but back then I was young and naiive.

Hawkeye 07-06-2005 11:22 PM

I used to be one of those people that couldnt stand The Beatles. I was in the "they're so over rated" camp. But you just cant deny their freaking greatness. There's a reason why they're always #1 on lists. Its because they are great.

Not so fast, Stew, I think that title belongs to me. I've never even heard of Erasure!

Hmm, I don't think I've grown to like any band I originally hated at all...

Ok, that IS bad!

I have a list saved on my computer somewhere, of the "100 Greatest Gay Songs," or something like that. It was compiled by some gay newspaper/magazine.
I was actually surprised how many of them were songs that I've always loved ("On The Radio," "I Love The Nightlife," "No Matter What," and so on). But I was also surprised by how many of them I had never even heard of.

golddustwoman77 07-06-2005 11:31 PM

I used to not really care for the Doors. Although, I wouldn't use the word "hate" at all. Now, they're like one of my favorite bands of all times.

dreamongypsydkm 07-06-2005 11:37 PM

I used to hate Pink Floyd when I was really little. All I knew was Comfortably Numb and it seemed so silly and ridiculous to me. Now of course I understand it, and I love Pink Floyd. I can't think of anything else.

Hmmm...I love the Doors, but still, some of the beatles escape me. If you haven't heard (which I can barely imagine) Waiting For the Sun, I highly recommend it.
I think the Beatles have some greatness, though...perhaps I've just heard too much...

One of my favorite songs EVER is Come Undone.

I wasn't a fan of The Police, Simply Red (thanks for ruining those, Mom) nor Hall and Oates. Mom still listens to Simply Red and I enjoy it. Hall and Oates, I love (i'm not ashamed to admit it!). And of course, The Police--Sting's voice really grew on me.

darklinensuit 07-07-2005 12:52 AM

John Mellencamp - I play Disc 1 of Words & Music quite a bit
Pat Benatar
Bonnie Raitt (can't say I love her, but I like her)
Simon & Garfunkel
Janis Joplin (a favorite since college, but not in high school)
Sheryl Crow (I knew only her earlier hits, many of which I don't like)
The Mamas & The Papas (used to find the boring, but now a favorite)

- Jake

Ugh. I can't stand Simply Red. Darryl Hall used to be one of my dad's customers. And you know my Sting story.

Don't let my mother hear you say that because she just LOOOOVES his voice. The new SUV has a CD player in it. I had to make a deal with her the other day--you listen to Stevie this trip, next long trip, you can force me to listen to Simply Red. Lucky for me, she always forgets to put her CD's in it

Back in the 1980s when I was in college and the Replacements were a big college band I disliked them now I think they're very good.I also have to join the ranks of the people who once did not like Led Zeppelin and now do .While I would not consider myself a huge fan still I can appreciate their artistry and what they mean to music in an historical perspective. They really were great.Maybe I should get their How the West was Won dvd.

Blondie - I used to hate them. Of course, all I'd heard was Heart Of Glass and One Way Or Another. But thanks to Josh & Co., I <3 Blondie now.

That's the only one I really changed my mind on. The rest of the bands I like I knew I liked immediatly.

U2 when the Joshua Tree came out. Hated them at the time.

Reba has recorded countless traditional country songs just like the others you mentioned.

yeah I dont particularly care for country either. But I do like some of the greats like Ronnie Milsap, and some of Willie Nelson's stuff. I also like a newer group called Nickel Creek....EXCELLENT musicians...but they are more bluegrass/country.

They should be paying Josh & Co. a part of their royalties.

I'm not a country buff, except for the artists I mentioned, so I'm sure you're right, but the majority of stuff I've heard from her is country pop fluff that I couldn't stand. I'm not a huge fan of her voice, either. :sorry:

Yeah, you never know what else an artist has recorded besides the stuff you heard on the radio. Think of Fleetwood Mac, for instance. But one of Reba's albums had so many fluffly pieces of crap hits that I didn't even bother to buy it to see if the other tracks were good. She's an experimenter, though, and sometimes when she tries new things, it doesn't work. I can see what you mean about the voice. Some singers are amazingly talented but their voices don't appeal to everyone. I can't really take Emmylou Harris' voice, but I know well that it's fantastic. For some reason I personally don't like it and I have never been able to explain that.

I violently disliked U2 at that time too. That record was so overplayed, and I thought Bono was a pretentious, pompous ass who overworked his vocal break.

My feelings about Bono haven't changed, but I do like about 8 or 9 songs out of their catalogue. Though I can only take about 4 songs in a row, due to the vocal break abuse. It grates on me. I do think they have some great songs, however.

I despise Reba! There is something about her that makes me want to vomit all over myself. I can not stand her voice either, it is so shrill and nasal.

ITA. Oh, and With or Without You eventually became one of my favorite songs.

I become violently ill when I hear U2. I think I'm allergic to them. Bono (or has he been annointed God yet?) needs to disappear.
