the Rick Turner guitar
I believe if memory serves me right, that Lindsey switched to this model for the Tusk Tour, and has used it ever since. I'm curious as to the reason that he made this choice, and why he's been so loyal to it. I'm more curious about it, not being critical. :D

David...
I don't know shiz about guitars, but I believe Lindsey wanted a fuller sound than his Les Paul was giving him, so he went to Rick to come up with a guitar especially made for Lindsey.
We have a few Ledgies who own Turner Model Ones and I've heard one "up close" (LOL), and it sounded amazing. |

The Rick Turner Model 1.
As far as I can recall Lindsey got three of the original Model 1 guitars between 1979 and 1981. These were complemented by another two around 1997. One of these was replaced in 2003 and in 2004 Lindsey chose another one from a set of three Rick offered him. Rick met Lindsey initially during the Rumours recordings when he worked for Alembic (John McVie used their Basses), Lindsey needed a guitar that would cut through the sound of the band. They were so loud and Lindsey's Les Paul Custom was getting somewhat lost in the sound. Rick set about designing a guitar that would give more clarity but with the same amount of depth as the Les Paul and Lindsey got the Model 1 around the time of the Tusk recordings and used it on the subsequent tour. Lindsey uses a basic Model 1, no tone chambers to save weight, he has a full solid mahogany body on his which gives his distinctive thicker tone. The guitar controls consist of a master volume knob, a passive tone control knob (which lifts up to split the pickup coils to give a cleaner "Strat" type sound), a flick switch to activate the parametric equaliser (which basically changes the sound of the guitar), a sweep control knob for the equaliser and finally a 12db cut/boost knob.. The type of Model 1 Lindsey uses is a Model 1-CLB. Although I myself have a Model 1-CLBP which is basically the same but with a Piezo and blender knob to give the guitar an acoustic tone too which extends the tonal possibilities further. Not sure what Rick's current list price is for a standard Model 1, haven't spoken to him for about a year but you would probably be looking around the $4500-$5000 area. Unless you wanted a customised version which of course would cost more. Check out www.renaissanceguitars.com for more details.. You can email Rick directly from the site too.. :wavey: |
What he said...
AND... Lindsey's Les Paul's design (not so much "sound") didn't really lend itself to his fingerpicking style. The Model 1's design was more condusive to being played fingerstyle. Plus, with the onboard parametric EQ, Lindsey had more tonal variations at his command. He could get his LP tone and with a sweep of the EQ, he could make it sound like a Fender Telecaster. Also, he could crank up the gain on the EQ for a simple overdriven sound that eliminated the use of footpedals (at least for THAT tone...he has footpedals for other effects). From the February 1979 issue of Rolling Stone magazine (via Les' Madness Fades site): Before I joined Fleetwood Mac, I used a Fender Telecaster because it suited by finger-picking style. I wanted to use a Fender onstage when we first started playing live, but it didn’t fit into the texture of the piano sounds Christine [McVie] was getting, so I switched to a Gibson Les Paul. While a Telecaster sounds great from three feet away, the Les Paul sounds beefier to anyone sitting in the back of the hall. And from the September 1997 issue of Guitar World (also via Les' Madness Fades site): It was while Fleetwood Mac were recording Tusk that Rick brought the plans for the first one [Turner Model 1] down to the Village. Rick had worked for Alembic before then, but all the Alembic designs he brought me seemed too sterile. They had too much parametric EQ and were always heavy and didn't seem to me to play very nicely. So I told Rick, “Try to make me a guitar somewhere between those Alembics and the Les Paul I'm using.” He came up with a simpler design and brought those down while we were recording Tusk. I started using them on stage after the Tusk album was out. They were really suited to my style, because they had a little cleaner, more even sound than the Les Paul. A little more mature sound, if you will; more clearly articulated. It had tonal elements that I'd been missing ever since my Fender days. |
THank you
Thanks alot guys for the information. It's always great to learn something new. :)

 That guitar is not only very beautiful, it also has a sweet tone, and you can play anything from jazz to rock to blues with it.

SO who is this Rick Turner guy? was he ever in a band? how did he get into making guitars and get so good at it? I apologize if I sound ignorant, but I've always been curious as to his musical origins

An Interview with Rick Turner (from his website) |
Rick Turner used to work for Alembic making basses and guitars I believe. From what I remember he met Lindsey thru a friend, and Lindsey had asked him to create a guitar for him...a cross between a "Les Paul and an acoustic guitar" and Rick took it from there.
I dont think Rick has ever been in a band, but he does play guitar. I had a long chat with him on the phone about 2 yrs ago when I was considering buying one of his custom Model 1's... |

Holy crap Chili you're huge. That guitar looks like a 3/4 guitar strapped on ya! Yeah I want to get my Model one to look like the one Linsey was playing on "The Chain" on the Dance dvd. |

It's just the angle of the photo, I think...I'm not THAT "huge".
http://www.renaissanceguitars.com/Ga...39/guitars.JPG http://www.renaissanceguitars.com/Ga...rmal_s%7E0.jpg It's interesting how the finish looks different depending on the lighting & camera angle...same guitar, but the finish looks completely different. |

The model 1 is quite a small bodied guitar anyway, it is a very nice instrument. I've played 3 Model 1's (well, more if you kind of count Lindsey's from Earls Court and Manchester that I strummed), and Ian Morton, the UK distributor gave me the choice of two instruments when I purchased mine.
They have a great sound and the Model 1 is a very unique instrument but I tend to prefer guitars built by John Suhr personally because the feel, playability and sound suit my style more.. If you live in the States, I would recommend dealing with Rick personally. He can sort you out for sure.. :wavey: |

The angle of the stagephoto makes you bigger definately, but still, you with a turner looks like Lindsey with a ukelele! ;) By the way, you look incredible    |
One thing to note about the Turner is Lindsey does not use it too often in the studio. Strats and Teles seem to be his electrics of choice when recording. I am sure their are examples of where he used the Turner in studio, but he puts down most of the electric parts with his collection of Fenders.

That's the beauty of the M1. It can recreate for stage the tonality of a wide variety of guitars without having to change guitars every song (ala Tom Petty & Mike Campbell). |

:o :o Thanks...my wife thinks so, too. She's the one who worked her magic on Rick Turner to have my M1 made (when, at the time, Rick wasn't even going to start a Model 1 waiting list for at least a year, much less MAKE them)...she talked him into making that one specially for me (without my knowledge! It was a wedding present!) It is pretty much a one-of-a-kind...personally signed by Rick. |
