female voice

I am watching "What's Love Got to Do With It" -

I think when you add them up and put them all together - Tina is the best for emotion ever.

I think Stevie is one of the best ever - top five in fact, esp. after hearing Circle Dance solo - sheebus.

So - here is my list - which could change

Tina

Bonnie Raitt - because she is off key is the reason - ya know what I mean

Stevie - Sable on Blonde and Gypsy - no one really comes close

Natalie Merchant - Verdi Cries few can touch that

Blondie - not a lot to work with but what she does with it

Ann Wilson - five notes above the measure and she's over 50

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

But they can be interchangeable!

Please tell me your's

Oh, God. That song makes me weep.

Also great for emotion:

Jann Arden - Cherry Popsicle and I Would Die For You

Sarah McLachlan, especially her older stuff - like her first 2 albums

Dido: White Flag

I will think of more... I listen to more female singers than male. I guess I just relate to what they're singing about more often... And I love when a song really aches...

On Edit: Of course, it goes without saying that Stevie Nicks is and always will be my number one!!

dissention 07-02-2005 10:44 PM

Christ, my list is almost the same.

In no particular order:

Bette Midler
Deborah Harry
Aimee Mann
Bonnie Raitt
Shirley Manson
Stevie

Five is a bit too restrictive, though, so I'll add:

Annie Ross
Sheryl Crow
Tina Turner
Ann Wilson
Billie Holiday
Joan Baez
Etta James

. . .

I sang it to my ex while playing the 1930's Steinway M they bought for me because it was the color of my eyes - followed by Silver Springs circa 1997 - like the day after we broke and in front of all of our friends -- tears do not really describe it

LikeAWillow 07-02-2005 10:47 PM

Interchangable order, although the top two are always the same:

Stevie Nicks
Ann Wilson
Whitney Houston
Mariah Carey
Pat Benetar
Celine Dion
Bonnie Raitt
Bonnie Tyler

I should have said after like 1970 - because NO ONE touches Etta - EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I owuld have put Bette in mine - but my voice teacher couls not STAND the way Bette's voice drifts - though I tend to love it.

dissention 07-02-2005 10:48 PM

Oh, and Bebe Neuwirth, too.

GardenStateGirlie 07-02-2005 10:49 PM

You have all pretty much mentioned who I would mention so I'll just add Annie Lennox and Sade to that list

I love that list and think Celine, while tech. perfect, tends for me, to lack emotion and Mariah in Hero is hard to touch

Your voice teacher smokes crack.  I think she has the most expressive voice I've ever heard.

And add Rosemary Clooney to the list, too, dammit.

 How could I forget Annie Lennox???? Thanks for the reminder Marissa!

YAY Stevie, Tori and Nina! I love Nina, but she didn't quite make my Top 5.

Of course I'm going to say Celine Dion, en francais en particulier
Stevie Nicks
Christine McVie (love the way her voice sounds on ITM)
Sarah Brightman (especially the way she does "The Music of the Night")
Shakira (I prefer her in native tongue like Celine, and she's even better live)
Ani DiFranco (I can think of only a few of her songs that aren't perfectly emotive)
PJ Harvey (I'm a new fan of hers but I love what she does in her song "Rid of Me"
Donna Lewis (very Cyndi Lauper-esque much of the time)
Reba McEntire (Blows. Me. Away. again and again...and I love it when she turns a one-syllable word into a ten-syllable one)
Patty Loveless (pretty much like Reba sans the embellishments)
Kim Richey (like the other two country divas but with a more campy, alternative thing going on)
Matraca Berg (just for her heart-wrenching version of "Lying to the Moon")
Carly Simon (so smooth)

I am listening to the rebroadcast of Angel from today and I swear she goes far higher than Carey in this song.

Another favorite of mine, and someone who doesn't get nearly as much recognition as she deserves. "Back When We Were Beautiful" just kills me.

Oh, I couldn't agree more!! I was just talking to someone today about this - when Celine sings in French, it is nothing like her English stuff. I saw her about 10 years ago in Montreal - was given the tix, otherwise never would have gone - and she was unbelievable. The setlist was about 50-50 French and English, but she only spoke French throughout the show, and it was just such a different experience. I also find the words to her French songs more emotional and touching. (She's also my homie, and I interviewed her mom after Celine won her Oscar, so I feel a special protectiveness about Celine!!) :o

All I Could Do Was Cry, I'd Rather Go Blind, Something's Got A Hold On Me, Almost Persuaded...her Muscle Shoals recordings are standouts.
You Go To My Head from 1999's Heart Of A Woman is spectacular also.

I think I've heard that song before but don't remember it well. What I've heard of her renditions of songs that she's written that were performed by and sometimes made famous by more popular singers has shown that she puts more emotion into them. I think her version of "Lying to the Moon" is superior to Trisha Yearwood's. And I found her video for "Back in the Saddle" irresistable the few times I actually saw it on country TV stations.

Ooooh, I am so jealous of you! :] I would love to see one of her French shows!!! That is so very cool that you got to interview her mom. You're so right about the French music; the lyrics and the whole feel of the songs are so dramatically different. I'm fond of some of her English songs too (love most of the Falling Into You album) but whenever people ask me what my fave Celine songs are, I always come up with the French ones.

Have you heard Dark Chords On A Big Guitar? Her voice has matured beautifully. The album itself is pristine, not a clunker on it.

I gotta get me some Emmylou. I have a sneaking suspicion I would love this woman.

Did anyone mention Linda Ronstadt? One of the strongest voices I have ever heard. She could sing anything. Waddy used to play a lot of her studio sessions.

Howl Like the Wind is one of my favorite things ever

xdreamsunwindx 07-02-2005 11:29 PM

Most of the bands/artists I listen to are female, so I have a few choices.

1) Chrissie Hynde
2) Shirley Manson
3) Natalie Merchant/Beth Gibbons
4) Deborah Harry
5) Patti Smith/Courtney Love
6) Penelope Houston (The Avengers)
7) Siouxsie Sioux/Karen O.
8) Gwen Stefani
9) Aimee Mann
10) Fiona Apple/Poe

People bag on her but I've always felt she has like this light around her. I've seen her live as well (for free  ) all in English.
