I'm a HOMOwner

Holy crap, you guys! I just bought a condo!!! On this, the 30th day of June, 2005 which is four days after my birthday! Nice birthday present if you ask me. I'm flipping out though. It's a lot of money. This is my first place. But it is going to be RIDICULOUSLY NICE. It's an old building, built in the 50s. They are gutting all the units but retaining the original hardwood which is absolutely gorgeous. New kitchen, new appliances, two bedroom, faces south and faces a court yard! In a super trendy cool area. I'm so excited!

But still, no one will have sex with me. So, there's that to burst my bubble!

GODDESS6 06-30-2005 08:33 PM

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   ~

What are the condo fees like? Ridiculous or reasonable?

GateandGarden 06-30-2005 08:36 PM

Congratulations! Love the thread title!

Condo fees are around $250 a month plus around $1200 for property taxes for the year. I'll end up paying around $1100 per month. This makes me have a stroke, 'cause I'm paying only $500 per month rent right now! $600 is a lot of money! No more Stevie shows for me for a while! Sigh...

$250 ain't bad, I know people who pay over $500 in fees. That would give me a coronary! I can see being a bit unahppy about a monthly increase of 110%, though. I lucked out with my apartment being rent-controlled; if it wasn't, I'd be paying much more than the measly $900 I pay now.

Livia 06-30-2005 08:47 PM

Congrats and welcome to the joy of being a homo-wner!

I became one myself 7 years ago - on Stevie's birthday! And no, I didn't plan it that way. How many times did you sign your name on the closing documents? I counted 40 something...

It's like a river - it's neverending...you'll always want to re-do, decorate, paint or change something. I just returned from Home Depot - picked up a few little things and some cool outdoor solar path lights that were on sale. :wavey:

GypsySorcerer 06-30-2005 08:47 PM

That is hilarous!!! "It's like a river - it's neverending..." HAHAH!!! Yeah that kinda freaks me out a bit. The whole money pit thing. That's so great that you bought on Stevie's birthday! I haven't officially bought it. I just gave them the deposit to hold it for 10 days. But as far as I'm concerned, I'm a HOMOwner!

That's almost exactly what I was paying for my condo. If housing prices in Calgary are anything like they are here you'll do really well when you sell it.

****! $500 is a lot! Calgary is growing quickly. So, I figured I should do it now before it gets any bigger! We have a population of 1 million now and in the next ten years they expect it to double. So, that will mean way more expensive housing.

You pay $900 on your own or with a room mate?

EnchantedSLN 06-30-2005 09:02 PM

Congratulations Daniel! Does Pocket-Stevie have her own room now? :p

I'm kinda sad right now, 'cause there's this boy that always goes to this club/bar/whatever it is on Wednesday nights. Turns out he's straight. Sigh... Seriously, there are NO guys here that I would be interested in dating. So, when I find one, I get all excited and then deflated when I find out they're, oh, I don't know, STRAIGHT!!! This is the first time one has turned out to be straight. And I really wonder if he is. But who wants a closet case, right. Lame though. :(

Absolutely! It's a two bedroom! So, I will make sure there is magic all around her! And by the way, Tiffany, I still pee myself thinking about the forgotten chimpanzee Stevie you did. It pops into my head constantly. Fond memories!

On my own. Could never share a toilet with a roomie. Trust me, though, that's insanely cheap (almost unheard of) for the Boston area. Even if I get sick of it eventually, I'll never move because it would be stupid. I pity my neighbors who moved in after the building was sold and now have to pay higher rent than myself and the other old tenants.

You must be so psyched to move. When do you move in?

Is House good? I see previews for it and it's always like "This week on House! His career is on the line when he has to make a controvertial decision that could end his career! Watch House this week to find out!" Seems awfully dramatic to me! Right now, I'm obsessed with Northern Exposure. Watching Seasons 1, 2 and 3 on DVD.

Lucked out?? See, this is what cracks me up. It really depends on where in the country you live. I pay $905 a month for 2200 square feet, detatched 2 story with for bedrooms and 2 1/2 bath... and that's in a premium school district.

Sorry for the rant.

Congratulations, All The Same. There's nothing like being a homeowner.

God, Diss! I share a bathroom with one other tenant. We have separate apartments but share a common bathroom. It SUCKS!! I don't want to see someone else's pubes in my bathtub, thank you very much! It's gross.

Good to know that my mortgage payments are really cheap comparably to Boston. Boston. How dreamy though! I want to visit that city really bad. My favorite movie is filmed there (Next Stop Wonderland) and I've always wanted to visit.

I take possession either September 30 or October 30. It hasn't been firmed up yet. We'll see!

I like it. I don't watch that much tv and rarely get hooked on shows, but the writing is decent and Hugh Laurie's character cracks me up. He's so wonderfully snarky.

littlecricket2 06-30-2005 09:53 PM

OMG, congratulations! I'm hoping to buy my first place next summer, so I'm saving now (I've been saving, actually). I'm a little nervous about the whole process! And at the moment I'm paying $785 a month in rent for a cozy one-bedroom. I can't imagine sharing a bathroom w/ anyone. It's interesting to hear what others are paying for what kind of amenities, etc. I live in the far western suburbs of Chicago, and I really like my place! I feel like I'm getting a pretty good deal at the moment, but I really need to start building up equity soon. I'm excited for you!

catinthedark 07-01-2005 11:24 AM

Hey!! Congrats, Daniel!! Welcome to the Condo-Club!! I bought mine just over a year ago...

Sounds like your place will be fabulous!! A courtyard and southern exposure... sigh... I'm jealous. In a really good way. :xoxo: Enjoy!!!

Get your butt down here! Our rent is under market at $1300, I have a roommate but she's very clean and neat. I think $1700 would be the rent now but my roommate's been in this apartment for 5 years and the landlord has never raised the rent. Yay!

Congratulations on your condo! I really want to own a home soon. I have to reel in my spending habits and save some $$$$$.

Great show. The scripts were fantastic those first 3 seasons. I worked on Season three - after that it kind of went down the toilet.
Congrats on the purchase. There is nothing like owning a place. But the work truly never ends. Never ends.

BTW, I am with you on the straight guy thing. Good God, I am a straight guy-wants-to-try-it-with-a-dude magnet. It can be fun, but the drama isn't fun at all.

The DVDs suck ****ing ass. Not even worth purchasing. It's akin to flushing money down the bloody toilet.

Totally agree. The first two seasons really piss me off. The fact that the discs are two sided makes them way more likely to get damaged and also they don't list the episodes on the packaging so you can tell which you've seen so far. Very annoying. At least Season 3 is a bit better. And the price was RIDICLOUS!!! But whatevs. I'm glad I have them. I love the show.

Cool that you worked on the show Sparky!

Yep, it's gross alright. But it builds character and makes for very entertaining stories. If I didn't live in this building, my life would be far less theatrical than it is!
