Songs about distance
I'm trying to get through something at the moment, so I was wondering if y'all could give me the titles of your favorite songs about how much distance (the geographical kind) sucks. And I'll even get specific--how much it sucks that you're in Louisiana and someone you love is in Arkansas. I doubt there's a song about that in particular but I thought I'd put that out there.
Any recommendations welcome and appreciated. :) |
Je T'aime Encore (I Love You Still) - Celine
|
"The Space Between" - Dave Matthews Band
|
My all-time cheesy favorite song about distance: Somewhere Out There - Linda Ronstadt and um Beabo Bryson?? I don't know - it's from An American Tail - and it's such a great song :D
Good luck getting through whatever it is you're going through, Hillary - we're all here for ya! :o |

Sorry, Hil, I really don't know of any songs like that offhand. If I think of some, I'll be sure to let you know. ..wait... there's always Too Far From Texas :p |
I can't think of the name of it, that Carol King song, maybe it's called So Far Away? Goes like this:
So far away.....Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fine to see your face at my door Doesn't help to know that you're just time away Long ago I reached for you, and there you stood Holding you again could only do me good How I wish I could, but you're so far away One more song about moving along the highway Can't say much of anything that's new If I could only work this life out my way I'd rather spend it being close to you But you're so far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fine to see your face at my door Doesn't help to know you're so far away Yeah, you're so far away Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely Nothing else to do but close my mind I sure hope the road don't come to own me There are so many dreams I have yet to find But you're so far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fine to see your face at my door And it doesn't help to know you're so far away You're so far away Yeah, you're so far away You're so far away |

My favorite Dire Straits song... "So Far Away."
Here I am again in this mean old town And you’re so far away from me And where are you when the sun goes down You’re so far away from me So far away from me So far I just can’t see So far away from me You’re so far away from me I’m tired of being in love and being all alone When you’re so far away from me I’m tired of making out on the telephone And you’re so far away from me So far away from me So far I just can’t see So far away from me You’re so far away from me I get so tired when I have to explain When you’re so far away from me See you been in the sun and I’ve been in the rain And you’re so far away from me So far away from me So far I just can’t see So far away from me You’re so far away from me |
Some of my favourites:
Ne me quitte pas - Jacques Brel Recuerdos De La Alhambra - Andres Segovia (an instrumental, but still) Ain't No Mountain High Enough- Aretha Franklin A Million Miles Away - Rory Gallagher Romy |

500 miles by Peter Paul and Mary (tho I love the HOOTERS version best) In fact, I love ANYTHING by the Hooters)
If you miss the train I’m on, you will know that I am gone You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles, A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles. Lord I’m one, lord I’m two, lord I’m three, lord I’m four, Lord I’m 500 miles from my home. 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles Lord I’m five hundred miles from my home. Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name Lord I can’t go a-home this a-way This a-away, this a-way, this a-way, this a-way, Lord I can’t go a-home this a-way. If you miss the train I’m on you will know that I am gone You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles. HOOTERS VERSION: If you missed the train I'm on You will know that I am gone You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles A hundred miles, a hundred miles, A hundred miles, a hundred miles You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles Not a shirt on my back Not a penny to my name And the land that I once loved is not my own Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home A hundred tanks along the square One man stands and stops them there Someday soon the tide'll turn and I'll be free I'll be free, I'll be free I'll come home to my country Someday soon the tide'll turn and I'll be free If you missed the train I'm on You will know that I am gone You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home... Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home... I'll be free, I'll be free I'll come home to my country Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home You can hear the whistle blow five hundred miles or Sailing (Gavin Sutherland, 1972) I am sailing, I am sailing, home again 'cross the sea. I am sailing, stormy waters, to be near you, to be free. I am flying, I am flying, like a bird 'cross the sky. I am flying, passing high clouds, to be with you, to be free. Can you hear me, can you hear me thro' the dark night, far away, I am dying, forever trying, to be with you, who can say. Can you hear me, can you hear me, thro' the dark night far away. I am dying, forever trying, to be with you, who can say. We are sailing, we are sailing, home again 'cross the sea. We are sailing stormy waters, to be near you, to be free. Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free. Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free, Oh Lord. those are two I think are appropriate... |
Missing You by John Waite
Heart of the Matter by Don Henley Best of My Love by the Eagles Sometimes Love Just Aint Enough by Patty Smyth Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper With or Without You by U2 |
Too Far From Texas (dodging eggs)
- Jake |
Well, there is 2000 Miles by The Pretenders but that is usually considered a Christmas song.
There is another song and I am not sure of the name or who it is by but I think that it is from the 80s era. It goes something like "I would walk 5000 Miles." I am not sure if that is what you are looking for, however. |
"Hey Kind Friend" by the ever-awesome Indigo Girls
Hey kind friend, don't know when I'll see you again On a ferry boat bound for Victoria laying down to hide from the wind Big dipper hangin over the city You know everything now is different for me Ain't no use in explainin the scenery Hey kind friend Won't you help me forget where I been Help me remember who I am.... I was too late in Spokane So I caught a ride through the Cascade range I saw the sun dying in Olympia running down on Capitol Lake So I ask you for some relief And it's one true root that you bring to me 3am it's good company Hey kind friend Help me forget where I been Help me remember who I am Hey kind friend- I don't know when I'll see you again It's OK friend So I'll meet you in New Orleans or I'll see you round Cause I don't know if it's worth coming down now I'm calling you from a gold rush town... I'm OK friend AND "Blue Motel Room" by the incomparable Joni Mitchell I've got a blue motel room With a blue bedspread I've got the blues inside and outside my head Will you still love me When I call you up when I'm down Here in Savannah it's pouring rain Palm trees in the porch light like slick black cellophane Will you still love me When I call you up when I get back to town I know that you've got all those pretty girls coming on Hanging on your boom-boom-pachyderm Will you tell those girls that you've got German Measles Honey, tell them you've got germs I hope you'll be thinking of me Because I'll be thinking of you While I'm traveling home alone Tell those girls that you've got Joni She's coming back home I've got road maps From two dozen states I've got coast to coast just to contemplate Will you still love me When I get back to town It's funny how these old feelings hang around You think they're gone No, no They just go underground Will you still love me When I get back to L.A. town You and me, we're like America and Russia We're always keeping score We're always balancing the power And that can get to be a cold cold war We're going to have to hold ourselves a peace talk In some neutral cafe You lay down your sneaking round the town, honey And I'll lay down the highway I've got a blue motel room With a blue bedspread I've got the blues inside and outside my head Will you still love me When I get back to town |
