CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- On the same day Billy Corgan released his first solo album, he revealed that he wants to reunite his band, The Smashing Pumpkins.

"For a year now I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep," Corgan wrote in a full-page advertisement published Tuesday in Chicago newspapers.

"But now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams," he wrote.

The Smashing Pumpkins, a leader in the early 1990s alternative rock revolution, broke up in 2000 after winning two Grammys and selling millions of albums during 13 strife-ridden years. Corgan's subsequent project, Zwan, dissolved after only one album.

Corgan, who lives in the Chicago area, did not reveal any details of a Pumpkins revival, including a possible timeline or what form a lineup might take.

Band members included drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky, who left after the final album's recording and was replaced by former Hole bassist Melissa auf der Maur on the subsequent tour.

Corgan's solo debut, "TheFutureEmbrace," was released Tuesday. Drummer Chamberlin -- who also played in Zwan -- is featured on the album, which takes an electronic turn.

Wow. Apparently even HE thinks his album is going to flop :laugh: I love Melissa auf der Maur but if they reunite, i'd want D'Arcy to come back...wonder what the chances of that will be.

That's what I thought too. Way to publicize the new record. I love D'Arcy too.

I was truly shocked at how bad it was from the stuff I heard.

I refuse to listen to it because I don't want to be totally put off. His best work has always been with that group of people (along with the work he did for Hole's Celebrity Skin). I would think he'd be incredibly lacking on his own.

I didn't have any expectations, really, but when I heard it, I knew I wouldn't be buying it. It's pretty bad, right up there with Courtney Love's solo album in terms of sheer awfulness. His voice is very obnoxious on the tracks I heard, moreso than before, and the production is so muddy and amateurish.

I find this difficult to imagine. That is one shrill, whiny instrument.

He is such a lamer. I actually did a real life -_- when I read it.

The solo album is terrible. He sucks. But I've always had a hard time liking the Smashing Pumpkins.

I've always liked the Smashing Pumpkins (nothing after Mellon Collie, though), but his voice can be the most obnoxious thing in the world. Like nails across a chalkboard.

Agreed. 1979, Bullet With The Butterfly Wings, Tonight Tonight, etc. It was a kickass album.

Ya think ? At proper volume, I suspect it could peel stucco.

He probably needs the money so he can keep his Cubs season tickets.

Up until Mellon Collie (which is such a stupid title) they were great!
Then Corgan got too self-indulgent.
Their last album was called Machina: The Machines Of God :rolleyes: I mean, honestly.

Corgan is such an idiot. He was slagging off Zwan the other day, saying that he let others come in and ruin his music, but that one album was a hell of a lot better than the music he's making now, or even the last few Pumpkins' albums. It's disrespectful to the people who worked hard on that record.

Billy played London recently and I found this review in The Guardian very amusing.

I saw the Pumpkins live years ago and thought the show really sucked. There aren't enough roofies one could slip me that would make me go to a SOLO concert of his. I'd rather blow Saddam.

I saw the Pumpkins live once too, round the time Siamese Dream came out. And once was definitely enough
Corgan was in a good mood to begin with but about a third of the way through got pissed off because some people were talking during the quiet parts of the songs. I think he played one more song, then made some moany comment and walked off the stage. The band were just standing there, they didn't know what to do. Eventually they realised he wasn't coming back and went off too. It was pathetic.

I've never liked the Smashing Pumpkins, since Corgan is basically a whiney bitch. Bullet With Butterfly Wings is brilliant though.

I've always despied Billy Corgan. Everything about him is ewwwww. The shaved head, the pretentiousness, the worst voice in the history of the recording arts, and too much material (something Prince can do, but Corgan can't).

He BUGS.

I guess i'm more of a die hard when it comes to Corgan but his solo album is something that should never have seen the light of day.I even liked Adore and most of Machina but this one is a botch.I don't think a reunited Pumpkins are going to be able to recapture the bombastic heights of Mellon Collie either.He should probably just stick to producing.
