Phrases you hate...

SO I was listening to NPR this afternoon and someone mentioned "licking their wounds" I really hate that phrase.

So I thought I'd open it up - what phrases do you hate?

More on my list:

"Your ass is grass"
"Move it or lose it"

Those sayings just really really get on my nerves...

ontheEdgeof17 06-17-2005 04:43 PM

'Get yer done' BARF.

'Final Answer?'

'You are the weakest link!'

'The early bird gets the worm'

'Your mom'

catinthedark 06-17-2005 04:44 PM

The city of (insert name here) "is in shock" tonight...

SteveMacD 06-17-2005 04:44 PM

"That's Ms. Bitch to you"
"Say it to the hand" (Hello Mr. Hand...)

catinthedark 06-17-2005 04:52 PM

Thought of another:

"President George Bush."

Makes me shudder and get nauseous everytime I hear it.

  omg...yes - that has got to be the worst one yet :p

NaiveMelody23 06-17-2005 04:57 PM

Get-R-Done

I would rather get myself castrated than hear that line again

seeker007nmss 06-17-2005 04:59 PM

The one I really hate: "That's what I'm talking about".

DrummerDeanna 06-17-2005 05:03 PM

Not really a "phrase" but the words "bling bling" spur violent mad emotions inside me...I HATE those words above all - don't know why but they grate on my nerves like nothing else...

CreepingDeath 06-17-2005 05:19 PM

'Get yer done' -by far the worst ever

Others:

'That's the bottom line'

'I'll give you something to cry about'

'It's like talking to a brick wall'

'Don't count your eggs before they hatch'

'That may or may not be the case' -well obviously

'Da bomb'

'That's money' -this is a new one I hate. My neighbor has 2 boys in middle school and they say it constantly. "That 50 Cent song is money, yo."

LEATHER&LACE64 06-17-2005 05:21 PM

"pound it" the guys I work with say it ALL day long and it gets real old fast.

"but what do I know?"
I always think--yes, what DO you know????

The Tower 06-17-2005 05:24 PM

Not necessarily phrases- more along the lines of words used.....

The overuse of the word "like".

The substitution of "go" for "says" or "said".

The substitution of "boughten" (not even a word...) for "purchased".

The plural of "you guys" ("you guys's") as a substitute for "your".

The incorrect usage of "irregardless".

The incorrect usage of "verbiage".

The acronym "F.Y.I.".

The overuse of the word "basically".

The pronunciation of the word "the" as "thee" to somehow signify importance.

The mispronunciation of the word "data".

The concept and usage of the term "family values".

The overuse and misinterpretation of the term "tragedy" in local news reporting.

What's with the butt issues, Frank ?

Very funny.

Serrart 06-17-2005 05:49 PM

I hate more the sound of some specific words in many politicians' speeches, like "freedom" "democracy", " peace"... when I heard them coming from their mouths I cringe, because they're able to take off from them any real meaning.

SteveMacD 06-17-2005 05:54 PM

"You can't have your cake and eat it too" Okay, then, why effing have a cake?!?!

"Could of/would of/should of" instead of could've/would've/should've

amber 06-17-2005 05:55 PM

Just Keeping It Real.

catinthedark 06-17-2005 05:57 PM

Along with the overuse of "tragedy" in the coverage of news, as mentioned above, I'll add the title "hero" to that overused list.

Also, from the never-ending mouth of George Bush:

"Homeland security"

"God Bless Amurrca"

"Nucular"

"Thugs and murderers"

"We love peace"

Yeah. I just saw it in another post, and that reminded me. I figured it might have a traumatic effect on someone, so I apologize.

catinthedark 06-17-2005 05:59 PM

Oh, and how about:

"Are you sure?"

No, man. I said it because I knew it was wrong.

No, I don't hate that one. I use it often to really mean - "I think you're wrong, but I'll give you a chance to rethink, and then if you still say you are sure, I'll answer with 'hmmm.'"

I forgot to mention the phrase "breaking news". I hear that and it's like chewing on aluminum foil. It's usually followed by "We don't know __________ " or "We don't have any information".

madformac 06-17-2005 07:20 PM

Well..

Phrases I hate are:

"Are you with me? " With you? in what respect... My boss says it ALL the time...

"Breaking News" .......... What exactly qualifies for this now? At first it was a big red newsflash thingy that told of a major news story or global disaster. Even breaking wind now seems to qualify as breaking news...

As we are on the subject of Bush how about "Special Relationship"... That means Bush bends over and Blair puckers up..

And my all time favourite annoying phrase... "At the end of the day"....

At the end of the day what? The day ends.... Get over it 'cos in 24 hours it will happen again...

Hey, MFM, good to see you. :wavey: In the spirit of the above, ie, phrases your boss says that you hate, I would like to add: "Do you follow what I'm saying?" after he has just told me the simplest thing in the world. Like, "okay, we need to order paper for this job".   Just because you're a moron, doesn't mean I am. Add to that - when any person in charge says: "We need to do such and such" when they really mean you need to do it. We need to stop talking like that, mmkay?

I get that, "We need to do blah, blah, blah" No, you mean I need to do it... I do the work and you get paid for it... Thats how it works... The art of delegation.. Ah well.... Life would be boring without the morons wouldn't it?

No. No it wouldn't. Life would be more interesting without the morons. It would be a bunch of smart people, making jokes, having a good time, always knowing what the others are talking about...Dull conversations would be a thing of the past. We would live in a Utopia of clever jokes and witty insights. People would always get to the point, and if there had to be long, rambling stories, they'd be peppered with jokes and have fabulous climaxes.

lagringader&r 06-17-2005 07:51 PM

I was just like talking to someone the other day and he goes "i just like boughten some beer for you guys's friends irregardless of whether you really like needed it or not." So, like I go "Your verbiage sucks ass and FYI, you basically owe us more than one six-pack because, according to my data, basically you guys's little lecture about family values, like used up basically more than three six packs." So, like he basically goes "Are you sure?" I go "Just keeping it real, dude." He goes "Well, God Bless Amurrca, that's like..a tragedy." So, like I go "Well, don't get your panties in a wad. It's not like you're thugs and murderers or anything. But, you can't have your cake and eat it too, so pay up. Move it or lose it or your ass is grass." So, he basically like held his hand up and goes "That may or may not be the case, but say it to the hand. Your mom! You are the weakest link! Bitch!" I go "Hey, that's Ms. Bitch to you. I swear, it's like talking to a brick wall. That's the bottom line. You like owe us. That's money. But, what do I know." So, like he starts crying and licking his wounds and I was like thinking "I'll give you something to cry about", but right then we looked to the TV and saw President George Bush giving a speech about homeland security and freedom haters. We felt unified and both go "That's what I'm talking about!" Final answer? We hugged and made up. Our friendship is like da bomb! Do you follow what I'm saying?

(I just wanted to see if that was possible.. Do you follow?)
