the curse of blondie

Has anyone picked this record up? I'm listening to an online radio station http://www.radio-indie-pop.com/radio.html and they have a couple tracks from it. Both are amazing! How is the rest of the album?

amber 06-10-2005 02:48 PM

I got it last year, it's good, and my CD came with Bonus Video, which was awesome. Of course, Diss will go on at length about how great it is, so I will step aside and let him do so. But I def. recommend it.

I haven't seen you around lately! How are you doing? Myself? Well, I'm glad you asked. I'm lame, as lame as lame can be! I feel all skiddish and shifty. This is not cool. I think I'll go buy the Blondie record now. It will help...

I've seen you, but then you never look at stuff I answer.... I was hoping you were feeling better. :xoxo: Looks like you're not. :( Skittish and Shifty? lame. I've been feeling that way, but also coupled with lazy lethargy. I hope you feel better soon. You may want to wait for other reviews before you buy it - Just in case. :)

dissention 06-10-2005 02:54 PM

It's one of my favorites from them, but it's definitely not for everyone. The first five tracks are classic Blondie (Golden Rod being one of their best songs ever), but as soon as you get to Background Melody, you know that it's going to get weird. Magic is pretty out-there, even for Blondie, as are The Tingler and Desire Brings Me Back. Her voice is fantastic, though, and I'd definitely recommend the DualDisc over the regular CD if you can get it.

Weird in what sense? I am a huge fan of weird music. Do you mean weird like Mary Margaret O'Hara (if you don't know who that is, she does some crazy vocals on Morrissey's November Spawned a Monster and is Catherine O'Hara's sister) weird or unlistenably weird? Not that Debbie Harry sounds anything like Mary Margaret O'Hara!

OMG, they're playing that horrid demo for Franz's Tell Her Tonight. Just when I had blocked it out of my head...

I've been just sort of popping in, adding my two cents and leaving. I must be missing your posts 'cause I haven't been hanging out here for long. Sorry. Yeah, I hope I feel better soon too. I'm really weird right now. Very introverted. I'm usually introverted, but I'm introverted in the sense that I'm annoyed when people talk to me? Like I get all irritated by the sound of people speaking. This is new to me. Hmmm... am I turning into Howard Hughes or what?

Maybe. But sometimes everything is just too irritating. Everything. You don't want to hear/see/do/whatever anything you don't want to. I'm sure it will pass. :) And remember, people are in fact, irritating, so, there's that.

Weird as in completely out of left-field and absolutely jarring upon first listen. The first time I heard Magic, I didn't know what the hell to make of it. It's an old folk song and they gave it the royally odd treatment. Desire Brings Me Back is...indescribable. A very avant garde jazz song. It starts off for the first minute or so as out of tune instruments playing together until even begins to kick into gear. I'm listening to that station now and trust me, Good Boys is no indication of the actual album. Amazon should have clips of all the songs.

Good Boys is crazy good! I have to admit I'm not a massive Blondie fan... maybe I'll download some of the new record on limewire and see if I wanna buy it.

Some of the remixes are even better than the album version. And the video is AMAZING, it's on the CD, like Amber said.

Out of all the songs, the most accessible probably would be these if you can find them on LimeWire.

Golden Rod
Undone
Rules For Living (so pretty)
End To End
Diamond Bridge (killer vocal)
Last One In the World

I like the weird stuff, myself, and since you have similar tastes, you'll probably dig the whole album.

Unrelated to anything, I'm happy to see the return of your "classic signature" :)

They also played End to End. It was super good too.

I love the last minute when she sings in that falsetto. It kicks even more ass live. Clem and his drums make me orgasm.

That part of Rhiannon is too out of control not to post! And my nick name is ALL THE SAME! So, it only seems fitting! Seriously, that Stevie Nicks guy writes some pretty good song, eh?

I don't know if anything is good enough to turn me into a uniballer, but yeah, they're amazing live. Their energy is through the roof. Great setlists, too, because they're not afraid to play tons of their new stuff or their more obscure stuff, and they change nightly. I just about passed out when they played War Child and Accidents Never Happen.

I've been astounded at some of the vocals (and bandwork, of course, but I expect that) that I've heard from the live recordings. (never seen them live in person). It really is amazing work.

That's the one thing that really pisses me off about Fleetwood Mac and Stevie solo - they never change their setlist. They approach live performances like they're plays. The rehearse the "performance" and play the same thing everywhere they go. They're the only band I know who does that. Lots of bands have certain songs they obviously have to play, but they switch it up at least!

If you ever get the chance, get their Blondie Live album. They didn't fix up anything in the studio, it's truly live (same with Live By Request). Forgive and Forget is simply stunning on it. I just might have to upload it.

Oooh. REally? Well, sh**!!! :)

Hey, I've been reading all the movie reviews today, in the SF chronicle. Mr. and Mrs. Smith got worse than The Honeymooners, and did you know that Christian Bale and Lauren Bacall are in a movie together????

It's Hayoa Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle"
High Tension got a good review as well....

I'll upload it tonight if you want hear it. That one is my favorite, along with the House Mix version from '99 where they completely revamped it and gave it a new spin. Her vocal on one of the boot versions I have is remarkable.

 That movie sounds...interesting. I love Bacall and Bale, so I'll have to check it out.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith looks like a fun piece of trash, mainly because Angelina Jolie looks SMOKING in it. I've never seen her look more beautiful. High Tension is one helluva nailbiter, that movie freaked me out big time. Truly horrifying and the end was kick in the balls.

That sounds great, I like remixes.

I like Miyazaki, a lot.

Here's what they said about Jolie - "Jolie remains something to look at, a real movie creature. To see her is to wonder what horror movies she'll be making when she reaches her "Baby Jane" years. She's arresting, beautiful without being even remotely lovely. But Jolie is wrong for the role. Pitt is engaging, despite the lack of clever dialogue to help him. But Jolie is only tough, which is the wrong essence for absurdist comedy. The joke is supposed to be that no one would expect the Smiths to be paid assassins. With Jolie, it's not that much of a stretch. It's more of a stretch to picture her hustling for laughs. Mr. & MRs. Smith could never have been good, but it definitely called for an actress with a lighter touch, someone such as Robin Wright Penn, or Carla Gugino - or Jennifer Aniston"
I think Jolie is not a good actress, anyway, so that was fine with me. She is definitely pretty hot, though.

Jennifer Aniston.

Carla Gugino is smoking, too, I could definitely picture her in that movie. That review's interesting because all the ones I've read (so far) have said that while the movie essentially sucks donkey balls, the chemistry between Pitt (who I hate) and Jolie is white hot and quite shocking because it's so damned good.

That's the thing, it was never officially released. That's why I was so stunned to hear it! I had it ages ago and quickly removed all traces of it because my ears were bleeding when it would come on. I love my Franz like I love the air that I breathe, and almost every other demo I've heard has been good, but that one? Fech.

They looked pretty chemistrful in the commercials... But she really is not a good comedienne, so I can picture what they are saying to be at least somewhat true. Anyway, I hope you find some reason to enjoy it. I like nice clothes, and hot actors, so that should be fine, at least.

Feh, I probably won't see it until it goes to the $2 theaters. Even though I've seen High Tension, I'd actually like to see it on the big screen, so I might see that this weekend.

There really aren't that many good summer movies coming, eh? The only ones I really want to see are Batman and Bewitched, and Manderlay if they release it here in the States.
