Obtuse References / Metaphors

All these top 10 lists got me thinking: What about the top 10 references and metaphors in La Nick's songs that are just totally out there? Songs or phrases that you wish she would re-work? Words that just don't fit? Songs about stuff that you just can't relate to? I couldn't come up with 10, but here are my top songs that I find just ackward:

Jane - no need to elaborate
Paper Doll - refusing to wear a coat
Nightbird - makeup and boots
That Made Me Stronger - song writing
I Miss You Now - European cities and fame questions
Seven Wonders - Emmiline
Love Is - the track of my tears
Kick It - kick what?

Docklands & the laundrymat

Street Angel - I've come to love the music & vocal, but the lyrics? Ugh. I still don't really know what a Street Angel is (I just know that they live on the streets & they always will.)

Ooh My Love - the whole castle thing - eh.

There's one that's been bugging me lately, I can't think of it right now....

 Oh I'd love to see Stevie going to the laundromat in her platforms.

One thing I'll say about Ooh My Love, TOSOTM was recorded in an old castle if I recall correctly, so I guess it's about her affair with Rupert Hine which would have been "in the shadow of the castle walls".

Wow, I love the lyrics to Nightbird. "I wear boots all summer long" that's fantastic to me.

But I agree about the cringe-worthy lyrics to TMMS.

I dunno... ...that one seems WAY obvious; probably the most obvious of ANY Stevie Nicks song...its about HOMELESS PEOPLE!!

I know, I know, I guess I worded that wrong. I don't like it when she's too literal - I feel like saying "well no ****!"

LeighB04 06-09-2005 11:11 AM

As a matter of interest, does anybody know which castle in LA became the recording studio for TOSOTM?

Hmm, I dunno. I just know it was a Dutch-style castle and apparently it was "fabulous"
It cost a bomb too. I think they converted it into a recording studio, if I recall correctly, I don't think it was one to start with.

Here are some lines that have me perplexed:

"There is a world that rises within the wind rose" from 24K Gold

"Sometimes the real color of my skin... my eyes without any shadow." from Nightbird

"The blankets that I love..." from Nightbird

"I wear boots all summer long." from Nightbird... kind of see a pattern here?

"In silence she says 'Excalibur.'" from Sable on Blond... WTF????

"Tar People" from Space Needle

"You fill the room with the wind and the rain and the water." from No Spoken Word, as opposed to "...the rooms are all on fire everytime you walk in the room." from Rooms on Fire. Hmmm... fire, wind, water... we are only missing earth. How 'bout, "You fill the room with mud every time you walk in the room."

"One set of doors was the color of honey; one set of doors was pink and grey." from Affairs of the Heart.

"And if I was a child, and the child was enough...for me to love... enough to love." from Gypsy

Perhaps someone should write a murder mystery where the clues are based on Stevie song lyrics... call it "The Stevie Nicks Code."

Tar people are heroin junkies, which fits because the song smacks of being about her stint in rehab, but it's just a bad line in an otherwise fabulous song.

She is deciding to use her secret weapon - because you don't call on the power of Excaliber unless really, really necessary

I think it makes the "sad - very true" line more literal - but it is an awkward phrasing and I LOVE the song

I LOVE "One set of doors was the color of honey; one set of doors was pink and grey." I think it is a cliche, but I like the imagery she invokes - so sue me

That sounds like something she'd say, actually.

I adore the song, but that whole section is awkward. It just doesn't work and the reference to "tar people" is simply laughable. Only she could call heroin junkies "tar people" and then use it in a song. She's a good writer, I'm sure she can come up with something better and more creative to express the failure of their stints in rehab.

I don't like the song, period. I like to sing:

Well, it's better to have brushed and flossed
Than never to have flossed at all

darklinensuit 06-09-2005 12:34 PM

Boy, I disagree with some of these. I love the wind and rain line in NSW and the castle thing in OML.

I'll contribute the line "Well, if she had flung out her heart against him, then in all of her wisdom, Oooh, that was a mystery"

Just that line? Contribute the whole song. Nothing she's ever written sounds as forced and self-aware than that one; it sounds as if she's actively trying to parody herself. I might believe it, too, if she wasn't under the influence of drugs so heavily.

I know - the song is all about copying Willy S. and trite imagery. The demo was better, but she cut like 1/3 of the lines in the final product - Klonopin haze indeed.

"And your face becomes thin, and you never thought it could."
"you can fly swinging from your trapeze, scaring all the people"

I love the song - she just throws herself into the vocal - except for the last 30 seconds, which need to be cut, IMO.
Considering she wrote it with Chris, it's probably a miracle it's this good.

I'm not a fan of that stupid song one bit, but I do enjoy the alternate version. It blows the album version out of the water.

No, they're bizarre. It took me sooo long to get used to that song. Even with the the lovely vocal, and the neat part where she sings "belladonna" all low, I still cringe a little.

That's right. Now I remember - I rarely listen to that song because it is not that good IMO.

But, what the hey:

The Nightmare
- written by s. nicks, c. nicks
- appears on Rock A Little (1985)
- b-side of single & 12" single I Can’t Wait (U.S. July 1986); 12" single contains

extended mix
Lyrics

Thrown down through the arms of sleep
She fell through the ivory morning
Deep into the waters
Of the one she called love
She paled in the wake
Of what some call a dream
But, you cannot know a dream
Till you've known the nightmare

When I stood with you against the storm
And I tried once again
Well, I said, "I'd like to leave you
With something warm"
How many times
Drowning in the sea
Drowning
That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But, the nightmare was not over
Still some call that a dream
The nightmare...the nightmare

Well, you cannot know a dream
When you turn away
You don't know
You'll never care
The night is not your friend
And you have not had her
And when the nightmare ends
But, you never understand
When you're gone
She wakes up calling out
Oh, calling out
As children may cry as she will

Anytime...oh, anywhere
Blinded by the light of the day
She has known the nightmare

So about the moon and her sisters
How dare he take them prisoner
Well, if she had flung out her heart against him
Then in all of her wisdom
Oh, well that was a mystery

That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But the nightmare was not over
Somewhere in her ancient ways
She walks through the night
And then she tries to get through the day
Some will never know
Or share any kind of dream

The nightmare
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the world
The nightmare
She wants him to fight...anytime, anywhere
She wants him to stand up
She wants him to win
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the real world
Blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the light
She was blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the day

(kudos to the nicksfix)

I actually like the lyrics to The Nightmare, it's the tune that's not so hot.

I always wondered what exactly Chris Nicks wrote in that song?
