The Rasp Factor

What are Stevie's raspiest vocals?
Which ones do you like?

I usually love the rasp-a-lots, though there are a few exceptions.
I think:
- Lady From The Mountain (love it)
- She Loves Him Still (love it)
- Rock A Little (love it)
- I Sing For The Things (not a favorite at all)
- Cecelia (not a favorite)
- WISYA (it's okay)

Any additions?

- Jake

Seven Wonders..
I LOVE the raspy!! Especially in When I See You Again (although I see a lot of people hate the "whatsamattababy" but I love that voice.

I think she's pretty raspy in One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star and I love it.

I'm not a huge fan of that song, but when she does that quiet little "oh" right before the first "when it rains it pours..." my heart aches. Love it.

OH MY GOD. JAKE ! :wavey: :wavey:

Seven Wonders isn't that raspy to my ears, just deep.

Definitely RAL and EO17 wail....

Also, The Wild Heart, Nothing Ever Changes, and BATB ("Ooooh la bete" or whatever the hell she's saying in French).

Edit: And how could I forget Nightbird? One of the best imo.

I agree that she's raspy - I forgot it on my list - but the rasp doesn't work for me here. Love the chorus, don't like the unduhcuvuhhhhhhhhhh....

Mirror Mirror is a favorite of mine... I don't know if you would call it raspy or whisky-voiced?

Agree with all of these except B&TB - I like the live version, not the one on TWH.

It's borderline raspy & has that stuffed up nose sound, but I do like it.

I don't particularly like the unduhcuvuh part other, but I absolutely love the overall drama. It's Stevie at her 80's bombastic, self-absorbed best, in my opinion.

diamondsnake 06-03-2005 03:37 PM

"I don't really need this in my life" on Some Become Strangers is really raspy. I love that line!

Illume seems raspy to me and I love her vocals on it!

Love Changes is one of my favs! Is that raspy? A little, I think.

All of Rock a Little really...

Umm, the Second Time!!! That has got to be her raspiest ever. I haven't listened to that song in forever.

diamondsnake 06-03-2005 03:39 PM

I love "When it rains, it pours!!!" Great line and the way she says the line is amazing.

dudden22 06-03-2005 03:51 PM

Edge of Seventeen, BATB, and I thought she was pretty raspy in Stand Back.

I think she's gotten much raspier as she's gotten older, but I think her raspiest ever is Destiny Rules. My boyfriend (now ex) referred to her by the usual, and tiresome, term of "goat" when he heard that song the first time. Can't someone think of something new to say? :distress:

Ok, we can be soul mates again :xoxo:

I love the rasp element of her voice. I Sing For The Things, Rock A Little, The Wild Heart, Nightbird, When I See You Again, OMBTR&RS, Beauty & the Beast, Garbo, Gate & Garden, Storms, Second Time, Joan of Arc (eerie Tango demo)... all of it.

My favorite part is the little electric guitar solo after "Just what I neeeeeeeeed". You know what part I'm talking about? Love that!

Everyone must know from my ramblings by now how much I alsolutely adore OMBTRARS.

GateandGarden 06-03-2005 05:09 PM

The coked-up "Juliet" outtake is pretty raspy is one of my favorite unreleased versions of any of her songs.

And I adore the raspiness in "Destiny Rules."

KarmaContestant 06-03-2005 06:13 PM

I would add the demos of Gypsy Beggar and The Nightmare (piano) to the 'rasp-a-lot' list.

gldstwmn 06-03-2005 06:50 PM

The Juliet outtake is particularly raspy. And pretty much any boot from the Rock A Little tour.

svnwndrs 06-03-2005 07:01 PM

I always love Stevie's raspy vocals! But, I always love hearing her sing just about anything. I basically have to agree with all the song choices that everyone else chose. But one song that sticks out in my mind with "the rasp" would have to be "I Can't Wait". Just listen through the whole song. Especially the part before the music break in the middle......"Oooooohhhhyyyeeaaaa!!!!!!" LOVE THAT PART!

Ghosty 06-04-2005 01:49 PM

What's the coked-out version of Juliet like? Sounds interesting....

I love OMBTRARS but wish the "undercover" line was not in it. It does take away from it when I listen to it. Bummer. But I love the rest of the song.

I love Violet and Blue and love the raspy-ness in her voice on it. I like when she really rocks out, like gritty rock, bluesy-rock, real rock-rock ~ whatever you want to call it. And often she sounds raspy in those songs. And I just love it. (Fall From Grace - love that too)

I love the demo for Whole Lotta Trouble where there are not horns at all. It just sounds like her and a garage band jamming and singing the song. I love it. I wish so much that is how it came out on OSOTM. I hate the whole horn section in it. Well, dont' hate. But don't like it much, that's for sure.

I just heard a demo of Violet and Blue too, and love it. And the demos of Blue Lamp, and I heard a really cool live version of that once. The quality of the sound was not good at all, but the live version of the song (think it was on the Bella Donna tour) was *awesome*! ~ live, wild, fast-paced - it was great! :)

I think I need to explain what I mean by raspy. I mean scratchy. Think Red Rocks video, HBO White Wing Dove video, etc.
Some of the vocal selections I'm reading here strike me as deep and full of vibrado (sp.), but not raspy. I like the deep voice as well, but it's not the same as the rasp. :)
Of course, I appreciate everybody's responses, and there are several I agree with. Just wanted to clarify.
