what's the world coming to?

I have been ridiculously sad lately. It seems everyone in my life is going through some major trauma right now. Family deaths, cancer scares, depression, loneliness. It makes it really hard to figure out what the point of it all is. I get easily overwhelmed by life. Anyone else? :distress:

strandinthewind 05-26-2005 10:45 PM

Hang in there. I learned a long time ago, life is what you make it and it really does not get any better or worse - it just gets. So, to quote Tammy Faye Baker (  ) "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade!" I know that is ridiculously simple, but the deeper meaning is make the best of everything, even when you feel like your life is fading

dissention 05-26-2005 10:46 PM

I cried at Star Wars. :wavey:

I'm not a depressed or blue person, I just feel a lot of regret over things I haven't done and am bitter about certain things that I've wanted to do but haven't been able to. Such is life, I suppose.

Cheer up!

Or as Dolly says, "You have to go through the rain to get to the rainbow."

I love Dolly AND Tammy so much.

I prefer "when life hands you lemons, shoot yourself in the face." But that might be just me. Just kidding. I know. It's the same old "it can't be that bad" thing. But I come from a long line of depressive people. When it gets bad, I take it all on and it takes over my everything. I'll move past this. I always do. But how many damn times does the world have to fall apart? It seems to come in tremendous waves. There is so much distress around me right now. Too much.

All I can offer is my life experiences. I thought my life would turn out differently. It did not. Som I made the best of it. I truly try to see the bright side of everything and it is VERY hard to do and I sometimes fail. If you are really really depressed, you might want to see a professional. Sometimes having an objective ear that is trained to help you can do just that. ALso, if it is a situation you can control, like a bad friend, etc., you have the power over your life and you can walk away. Good Luck to you.

I just read a study today that says cynicism begins very early in childhood. I was f*cked from the beginning.

LOL - I am such a cynic - but being the Jedi I am, I trained myself not to let it get to me

wondergirl9847 05-26-2005 11:04 PM

Yep...

I get depressed every month like most women do. I cry for no reason and just get "down in the dumps". Then, it passes and I'm cool again. :) You will get through it, don't worry. I was an emotional wreck yesterday because of my dog and having to make the decision to put her down, but I was tons better today, having come to peace about it. Sure, it's still difficult and is going to be so next week, but she'll be free from pain and suffering. I love her, she loves me, and that's that.

We Ledgies are here if anyone needs to vent or whatever. :)

You are absorbing too much pain from others. Unplug, do something just for you that makes you feel good. Things are not all bad it only seems so, its a trick your mind plays on you when you are low.

What concerns me is that you say you come from a long line of depressive people. Depression is very steeped in biology so I would recommend that you do get help because it isn't normal and you don't have to live that way. My family is riddled with it and I've battled it with a lot of success and I'm happy today. If I didn't get help I'm not sure I'd be here. I'm also not sure my brother would be here since he just went through a severe episode which I helped him with. It broke my heart. But he is doing so well now. Anyway, if you would like, we can talk about this more offline.

I also want to point out that the world does extra suck right now, it isn't just you. But you can still feel good. :xoxo:

Ditto to everything she just said. I knew she was going to say it better than I ever could.

I have to agree about professional help. It was an idea I was at first opposed to but it proved to help me through my teen years, which were pretty awful, though it's all relative.

I also agree that if you are in a situation in which you're suffering for others as well as yourself, you really should take some time out to focus on yourself, doing something for you that is much deserved.

Things aren't all peachy with the world in general, as she said, so I've no doubt that's affecting all of us to some degree. You're definitely not alone and don't ever hesitate to vent to us here on The Ledge. I think that's part of the reason why we're all here together. :)

all the same 05-26-2005 11:19 PM

Thanks you guys. I think it is time for professional help for me. I've been a wreck since I was a teen. Battled suicidal thoughts (not so much in the capacity that I want to kill myself, but that I just no longer want to be), depression, loneliness, and a host of other things. But I think my biggest problem is that am a sponge for other people's pain. If someone is in pain, I can sense them from across the room and swallow all their pain and it absolutely knocks me on my ass. I really gotta do something about this because it's not really making my life work for me. I feel like I have a totally disfunctional life.

Me, too, I've been really sad. I'm sorry you have been. I always think life is pretty pointless, though. Usually, I don't care, but lately it's all been very douchebaggish. Although, I swear I would not feel this way if I had tons of money.. People say that's not the answer, but...I dunno... :p

I agree. Give me a few million and I'll make things happen for myself, don't you worry. Whoever said money doesn't buy happiness was dead-ass broke, I tell ya.

I hope everyone who's feeling "douchebaggish" feels better.

I think everyone has their problems, even the wealthy. But I do also believe that they should shut the f*ck up and go for a nice yaught ride to clear their heads! But seriously, when you have money (like me  ) you develop new problems. Every since Momsy and Dadsy gave me my first million, life just seems so, well, meaningless... I mean how many diamonds can one boy have? Uh... okay, yeah... in all truth, I share a bathroom with a pot dealer! Nice, eh?

"always la-hame! always la-hame! liiiiiife!!!!"

I told my one friend, who's b-day is today, how bad I felt, and she gave me some kind words. She was all "you're great! People like you! and if anyone doesn't, they are totally missing out, and they are lame! You have a great personality! And, it's probably only people who have ugly hair, anyways!"
so, I offer those same words to you, in hopes they offer you solace.... :wavey: :xoxo:

Lux, I'm kind of scared for you. Life is a gift... it is just crazy talk to want to kill yourself at age five (or twenty two for that matter). Things get me down but sooner or later you have to shake it off and bounce back because you only live once and there are so many beautiful things out there and so little time to enjoy them.

Yeah, Lux, that concerned me too! Oh, look at me absorbing someone else's pain again! Just kidding. You are doing okay though now, right? Well, who am I kidding. I'm a total wreck right now and wanna go drown myself in my bathtub.

Well, hang in there... I don't have any advice, but just know that you're not alone. The last year has been a hard one for me, sad and lonely... sometimes it's a bit overwhelming.

all the same 05-26-2005 11:39 PM

One other really nice feature about me is that I have what my friend has named an "airwall". When I meet someone new, I immediately build a nice little wall to keep them away. This works really well for me especially when it comes to dating. "Oh, what, you're interested in me? Hmmm... get me some bricks and cement, 'cause you ain't gettin' in!" I get tons of action that way!

me, too. :distress: well, not so much with potential datees, just bunches of other people. :p Anyways, it's a fabulous defense mechanism, isn't it? I have to say, though, I usually just feel that I don't actually like most people that much. Projection? You be the judge!

Isn't that the way it always is - the more you ignore them, the harder they try. Then, when you FINALLY meet one you are interested in, they want nothing to do with you, which usually makes you want them more. It is a VICIOUS MOTHER FU^&ING CYCLE

If it makes you feel any better I sometimes feel the same way. Not that I am depressed or anything. I am just finding that I have some social problems- or to put it more bluntly I have a bunch of "friends" and I don't like any of them! Why can't I just attract people that are funny and smart and care about things other then their shade of nail polish? I am just so sick of some of the people in my life right now. So, I can relate to your state of miserableness to some degree.

Loneliness is a terrible thing. I live in constant denial of my loneliness. Ever notice if you mix up the letters in my name DANIEL, you get DENIAL. Nice, eh? I hope you're doing okay. You're a cutie pie. "There is magic all around you if I do say so myself."

Ha! I'm the same way... I was actually accused of being an alien by an ex... because of the wall I build and my "issues".

strandinthewind 05-26-2005 11:51 PM

I hate being lonely, yet I like doing most things alone. I go out by myself, when I go out, I sometimes go to the movies by myself, etc. But, I am not really what anyone would even remotely consider as shy (shut up Amber  ) and am in fact very gregarious - probably to the point of being aggravating  I guess I am very lucky to be comfortable with that.

Um... did you just crawl into my head and read my mind? EXACTLY!!! I pine away for boys from afar and in a sick way like having them far away from me so I can idealize them and turn them into something they can never be. It's the Angela Chase in me (My So-Called Life - best show evahhhh!) There was a brilliant line from My So-Called Life that went something like "I feel like I will die if I don't have the crush. Like I will starve to death. If the crush actually turns into something, then it's like it's not yours anymore." I am totally paraphrasing. When a crush turns into something... like a restraining order, for example! ... then I want nothing to do with the boy. But that like never happens because I am way to f*cked up to date anyone. Damn these all protecting airwalls!

Notwithstanding you other "issues," don't you think everyone builds walls. I mean we all have out secrets. We all like our privacy. We all like a little mystery. Do you build huge walls all of the time?

In edit - that was meant in a curious way with no derision - I think you prob. knew that but on a re read I thought it could come off as that

See, I like having "me" time. I just want to throw my cell phone out the window when I am relaxing at home reading some magazines and all of the sudden a "friend" calls to bitch about their current "crisis" (which is generally an excuse for them to hear their own voice).

I'm the exact same way. I'll talk your ear off and am totally social with everyone but I prefer to be by myself half the time. I can't even shop with other people because I'm usually on a mission!
