The Enchanted Voice
Ok, so i just got in some shows from one of my trades today, and i got two upgraded shows from the "Enchanted" tour... I'm listening to the Woodstock show right now and it's just incredible.. i am stunned at how much power Stevie has lost in her voice since just 1998...Not only that, but she was hitting all the high notes and had perfect tone.. ... what happened between 1998 and 2001 that caused such a dramatic change??? i just don't understand it.. :distress: :(

I have heard this same sentiment before, although I have not heard the Woodstock show.

Probably menopause or "pre" menopause. I know from experience what pre-menopause can do to your voice. In fact, any female singer can be hampered monthly. Vocal chords retain water just like other muscle tissue at "that time of the month." Laura |

Kelly's right - one of her best performances in years. Spot on - the setlist, the vocal, the performance, the venue - perfection!
BTW - I tend to agree - I don't know if it's just aging, or if she's being more cautious with her voice as of late, but generally there is a marked difference in the power of her vocals between 97/98 to 01/03/05. IMO (and Diss's too. :D ) |

'94-'98 (or '00) is my favorite era of her voice. Listen to Edge of Seventeen from the Woodstock show, more specifically the yell at the end of the bridge. That note that she hits, however intentional or not, is shocking. What happened in 2001 is a mystery to me and it kind of depresses me. |

You're not going to cry, are you? I hear that's your new "thing." :( |

The woodstock show is amazing. There is an awesome DVD of it too.

I love how her hair falls in her face in GDW!!!!! I also love that scared out of her mind chick in Landslide! I think Stevie said to her (she was brought up there on accident) "could you sing to this many people - I think you could) |

And your mention of GDW made me think of the Radio City '98 video. I love when she does that scream and then thrashes her head towards the floor and sort of hobbles away from the mic with her head down. |

She gave her story on the NicksFix I think. It was cute. |

Yeah and during Stand Back the camera goes to this girl with glasses who is so into and does this dance to it  So we miss the Stevie kick. |
I hope Stevie didn't start smoking again, because when she quit her voice sounded awesome, I couldn't believe the difference! A depth that I thought would be gone forever returned.

Brit saw her smoking in Atlanta at the last FM show. Not that brit did not see what she saw, but I was looking a few minutes before and saw no cig. there have been other reports as well, but who knows. Of course, they may not have been cigs     |

I am soooooo good about it - but then after two cocktails I run for the pack - oh well, I suppose that is better than everyday as I drink mostly on the weekends and not every weekend  |

Well, that makes people want to be by you :wavey: I need to start doing that. I went Jan. Feb. and most of March without one (or drinking for that matter) and neot even thinking about one. Then, I went to China via Paris and that was that as EVERYONE smokes in those two places  |

I don't think Stevie is smoking again. In Vegas, she was holding out all her notes to the end of each phrase. That kind of vocal longevity is the first thing to go when you smoke.
I think she's just getting old. AND- she never really took good care of voice anyways. A women's voice is at its peak in the 40's and sometimes into the 50's. I think she's in the midst of a vocal decline. However, I think if she gets rest and is fresh, her voice reflects it. Just look at the difference in vocal quality from "Sara" on the second leg of SYW tour  to her Vegas voice. I think 135 dates really did a number on her. |
Well, she was smoking on the SYW....at least during the sound checks. Brit saw her once and I know ppl who work at Mellon Arena see her smoke a couple, too. Whether she does now, I don't know.
|
Regarding her smoking, who cares if she has a few here and there. It's HER choice. I might question it if she went back to smoking multiple packs a day but give her a break. She's an artist and works her freakin tail off! So what if she wants to smoke. I mean I care about her health and all but after all this time if she does it in moderation I see no problem. And if that IS indeed what is affecting her voice (which I find hard to believe) than so be it. She gives us so much people, let her be.
|
I know two people who say she smoke cigs occassionally. I also think she indulges in the other quite often but that is only my own opinion. I could care less about weed....she is one highly anxious, nervous nelly.

Stevie was quite sick during the TISL tour and played too many shows in the SYW tour. She sounds great in the Vegas songs I've been able to hear.
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Woodstock show after a bit of a break from the Enchanted tour? I'm just thinking rest and health are big factors, plus as was sad earlier she's getting older. |

But yeah, Liquid's right... :) She was in amazing voice in general that year. Further proof is currently available at http://www.angelfire.com/music6/thevault/, where mp3s of the 98 Tampa performance are posted. She sounds great on everything! I especially love "Twisted." |
I saw Stevie on the Enchanted tour and I will NEVER forget how incredible she was. I was so excited that when she first came out, I burst into tears!
|
I am of the opinion that something was lost in her voice between '94-'97. The Dance/Enchanted voice was definitely not the voice of '94. I am so glad she started working with a vocal coach. Her voice has a smooth quality to it now that I really love. I've loved all the incarnations of her voice though. Who says Stevie never changes?
|
Also to add her SYW Tour Voice was much stronger than her TISL Tour voice in my opinion..Even in songs like Rhiannon...during the Trouble in Shangri La Tour even before the health problems she couldn't manage to get out the "Dreams" in "dreams unwind loves a state of mind..." it came out as "unwind loves a state of mind"
