Stolen Demos
As so many of you are fanatics (and I mean that in the nicest and most admiring way), perhaps someone could let me know which of the demos were stolen from Stevie, and which came from Modern Records (I believe they dumped a lot of stuff at some point).... help??
|
If they're demos, they were nicked. I don't think Modern has ever condoned any release of Stevie's demos.
|
That was my original thought, but then I heard that when Modern closed it's doors, it tossed/dumped/gave away a bunch of stuff, including Stevie's "unofficial recordings".
|
Modern nevercondoned the release of any demos, but I believe that when they shut down they sold off or gave away the contents of their warehouse? Or something like this? Didn't I read this somewhere not too long ago?
I have no clue which demos are the original stolen ones & which are the Modern warehouse ones, though. :sorry: |
I believe the "original" stolen demos were the ones that appeared around 79 or 80 and included Without You, Cathouse Blues etc..on Almanac. Others have dribbled out through the years..including songs that were recorded for possible use on TISL and leaked onto ebay.
The bigger question in my mind is who leaked Lindsey's entire album? Those demos leaked all at once, onto ebay..on cassette and were purchased and put up for free download. |

i am operating under the impression that Modern auctioned off everything and nothing was done to stop it. is it bill that owns all of those now? i may be getting mixed up...
anyways, there were only a few demos 'stolen' in the conventional sense. she said at 'storytellers' that someone literally came into her house, took the demos, copied them, and then came to put them back. i think it was only a handful of songs (some already listed). everything else, i tend to believe that a 'friend' of hers gets a tape and then sells it, but also that some are leaked intentionally. IMO it's like the A in the ABCs of creating a rabid and fervent fanbase: let them have all that they can handle, they'll buy what you put out anyways. |
As far as the Master Reels they were auctioned off from the Modern "warehouses" and apparently the option was given to Stevie and Co. to buy them as Modern owned the Masters, but they declined saying they already had copies... so the auction went ahead and the highest bidder won! Stevie and Co. either didn't realize what was there, or didn't think anyone would actually go through the trouble of baking the reels to be able to extract the audio from them. But they did. That's how I understand it..
The early demos.. don't know much about how they surfaced. |
Anyone circulating demos or bootlegs is a SCUMBAG!!!
IT MAKES STEVIE FURIOUS!!! |

You do know that 95% of this board are bootleggers? |

If it makes her so furious, then she should look after her unreleased material better than she does. She was offered the masters and turned them down, so tough tacos. I won't be crying in my Wheaties over it, that's for damn sure. |
I prefer the term...

Woohoo!!!
I'm a scumbag bootlegger!!! :blob2: I've always dreamed of being that someday...sigh...

On that note, I have to say that all the wonderful music I've downloaded from various fan sites in the past two years of my fandom has overshadowed the duds like "Lily Girl." Songs like "The Dealer" and some of the demos for songs that were actually released have only made me a bigger fan. |
The think I've realized is that there are pretty much demos and recording studio tapings of pretty much every band on the planet... It's not like FM and Stevie are the only ones on the planet.....
And hey... I agree with Brian... Not into it for the cashola... Just the sheer enjoyment of the music. And I would argue that it's helped maintain their fan base through the lean years. |
Speaking of demos, I just got my copy of the Uncirculated Rumours LP from ebay.
Can anyone give me any background on this item? I wish I had a clear version of this piano demo of Silver Springs. |

i find it hard to believe that we're all scumbags. having met a lot of ledgies in vegas, i can assure you that there's actually only one or two scumbags hangin' around these parts... and even then, i don't fault them for downloading. i also find it hard to believe that you've never downloaded. and who are you by the way? stevie owes a lot to the online trading community. IMO. if the only 'recent' work we had to keep us going was SA and TISL i can assure you, and forgive me for speaking for others, a lot of us wouldn't still be worshipping at the altar of chiffon. |
Funny I would not describe Stevie as "furious" at the TISL show I went to when introducing Sorcerer she said "some of you may have heard this a longgggg time ago and that is ok.." with a big grin on her face.
BTW..I am SURE all the negativity surrounding her Vegas shows and the blurbs of reviews that YOU have posted with the most negative parts make her furious. Actually you are obviously posting to incite, so perhaps I should hit the ignore feature? |

You PAID for that stuff? With about as much effort as it took you to log on to eBay, you could've downloaded the stuff FOR FREE!! OOOPS...ok, I didn't see MacMan's post until after I posted. |

I wanted the album as a collectible. I personally liked the cover with Stevie's Rhiannon painting. Certainly other Leggies have this LP. I have seen many posts referencing it. I was only interested in finding out when this LP surfaced. |

The versions of Mistaken Love that are on the LP are posted now over on www.sararhiannon.com. Obviously, the versions from the Mistaken Love Masters are much better than the LP version. The "birds rising" demo of Rhiannon is on the LP and is also posted on sararhiannon.com. Again, the LP version is subpar to the master version available for download. Oh where is the Silver Springs piano master . . .? :( |
Just wanted to introduce myself to ya, high priestess, I'm a little heard from member of this board who is a SCUMBAG BOOTLEGGER! :wavey:

Stolen Demos?
Stevie once said "she gave demos to everyone she new' or something like that. Anyone remember the exact quote. So in other words she should not be surprised that they are out there.

Wow, people get ugly so quickly around here, I just don't want to hang here anymore. All I was hoping for was a little list of songs that were definitely stolen from her house, as opposed to those she gave away or were sold or whatever by Modern Records - I thought I'd get the answer here. All this negative stuff is just so unnecessary, and so unlike what I expected to find from people who consider themselves Stevie fans... oh well, maybe I'll pop back sometime and visit, but for now, I'll try to find the info some other way, I guess. Thanks to those who tried to shed some light.
