Do you wear glasses or contacts?

I wore glasses from the age of 5 to 15. I'm 22 now and have been wearing contacts since 15. Supposedly, I'm a candidate for lasik at 23. That would be very nice, I'm thinking. The eye doctors/nurses/whatever are always telling me that I have some of the worst eyes they've seen.

GateandGarden 04-30-2005 11:44 PM

Sorry that I couldn't come up with better choices for the poll, as they don't really fit everyone.

amber 04-30-2005 11:52 PM

20/15, baybeh!!!

heyjupiter678 05-01-2005 12:01 AM

I picked the first one, but I didn't get glasses until I was 15 or 16. My eyesight is terrible -- 20/200, I think.

Yeah, I'm in the 200 realm in both eyes. Astigmatism in both eyes, too. What fun. :woohoo:

WelshWitchPMD 05-01-2005 12:10 AM

I have been nearsighted since first grade. I started to wear glasses then and when I was 15 I started to wear contacts. Right now I have my very old glasses on. I only wear the contacts if I go out.

My contact presciption is -7.0

wondergirl9847 05-01-2005 12:13 AM

I'm a four eyes. LOL

I can't imagine putting a contact on my eyeball. Of course, I think I was scarred for life when my aunt stayed at our house for a couple of nights because her contact scratched her eye. I have been super terrified of anything near my eyes ever since. Two of my aunts had lasik (before it was a laser) and they didn't really see a whole ton of difference. Now, everyone and their dog is having lasik done. I hate my stupid glasses, but I hate anything near my eyes more. LOL

I'm probably a 6 million/6 million by now. LOL When I was a kid, I think I remember them saying I was 30/50 or something. I have no clue what it is now.

Oh Christy, contacts are nothing like that air puff machine! They are not that bad but you just have to get used to them.

I've never been around someone whose eye was scratched by a contact lens. I think that can only happen with the hard ones, not the soft ones like I have. But, it's still freaky when I have a tear or rip in one of mine. Sometimes I don't realize it and then I just put the thing in my eye. And then I can't understand why my eye hurts! I'll finally get the bright idea to take it out to see what the deal is and there's a gigantic tear!

Anyway, I had the biggest phobia about anything touching my eye when I was in high school. It just made me sick. And when I was getting fitted for my contacts, I couldn't stop myself from pushing the person's hand away who was just trying to help me. It was like this involuntary reflex--I COULD NOT let her do that. Then when they were in, it felt so bizarre. I remember saying, "Okay, but once I take them out, which I have to do at some point, I'm not going to want to put them back in again!" The doctor just laughed. It actually took me only a couple of weeks to get over all of that. Now I'll touch my eyeball to my heart's content, though it doesn't make my heart particularly content to do so, but it's just an expression. So, the point of this rambling is to say that I'm sure that if you wanted to try contacts, Christy, you could do it, too. You could get over that phobia easier than you think, I bet. :)

Dreammms 05-01-2005 12:21 AM

I have been wearing contacts for a year. Both eyes are...-0.75

wondergirl9847 05-01-2005 12:24 AM

Wow....

Good to know I'm not just a big baby...that everyone has these fears. YAY!! LOL

I know if I did wanna get contacts, I could...it would take me a lil while though. I still can't let a Visine drop just drop into my eye...I have to squeeze it out at the side and let it roll into my eye.

I despise driving too. I don't have my license yet, but I HAVE to get it soon because we are taking a trip to California/Oregon and we are driving. My dad doesn't need to drive that far/that much. :distress:

I used to be the same way with eyedrops! I would do the same thing! That aggravated me so much. Now I welcome them...it's crazy! Oh, and I don't have my license yet, either. I hate driving myself. So, I can pretty much relate to everything you said there!

GardenStateGirlie 05-01-2005 12:35 AM

I've had glasses since i've been in 5th grade and quickly transitioned into contacts by 7th. I hated my glasses (wire framed nerd alert). I now wear both and absolutely looove my glasses.

I hated myself so much in glasses. It's crazy how they look good on some people but make others look just awful. Well, it also depends on the kind of glasses, but it seemed that none worked for me. I felt so much better about myself when I got rid of the glasses.

Oh crumbs..poor you , one stigmatism in one eye's bad enough for me!

Mari 05-01-2005 04:53 AM

had glasses since I was nine, contacts (hard lenses) from 16 to 26, until they became unbearable because of hayfever and having to stare at computerscreens in airconditioned rooms too much. Tried soft lenses last year but I think I'm allergic to the cleaning fluids. I don't mind glasses, really.
oh, about -8 both eyes.

face of glass 05-01-2005 05:28 AM

Never used either, but I might have to start on that soon. Bleeding computer screens. o_O

Yeah, it sucks. I had one in my right eye since I was about 5 or so, and then if that wasn't bad enough, they told me about four years ago that I'd developed one in my left eye as well.

GypsySorcerer 05-01-2005 10:28 AM

I am terribly nearsighted. I got glasses when I was eight and contacts at 11. I've never had trouble touching my eye, so contacts weren't a problem for me.

I like myself in glasses...just not those. They weren't very becoming on me so two years later, I asked my parents If I could get contacts. They agreed and I had a hell of a time at first. It would take me 40 minutes to get them in and then it would take me forever to get them out in front of a mirror. Looking back on it now it makes me laugh because i'll be sitting anywhere and reach in and take it out (it still creeps my mom out that I can touch my eye), clean it off and put it back in my eye in a matter of seconds. I'd love to rid myself of contacts completely and have the laser surgery. I know i'd still have to wear glasses (i'm pretty sure everyone I know that has had it done, still has to) but not having to worry about dry eyes and things--that would be nice.

Yeah, I used to have to set time aside for the insertion/removal of contacts because I just could not do it quickly, but nowadays I'll just take one out and pop it right back in while I'm talking to someone. Are you sure that the laser surgery wouldn't correct your vision completely? I've been told that if I have it done, I will never have to buy glasses or contacts again, which would be a great convenience for many reasons. But maybe it's not so simple.

DrummerDeanna 05-01-2005 11:04 AM

I got glasses in middle school - but just for reading and I never wore them lol..

Now I wear them everyday - mostly because I do a lot of reading/writing at my job so I need them all day - I don't usually wear them on the weekends...unless I'm going out or something...

I think I look pretty good in glasses - but the other night I was hanging out with this guy from work and I took my glasses off to rub my eye and he was like, "whoa! You should get contacts - you look really good without your glasses..." I was like..."um thanks?" then he retracted and was like "Um - no I mean you look good with them too...but um...yeah...." then he took his foot out of his mouth :p No - it was nice compliment but I have NO desire to wear contacts....at all....

estranged4life 05-01-2005 11:14 AM

I actually...

need glasses now, Just to read with...

 Yeah, I hate to tell people that they look really good without their glasses, because then I think I need to follow that up with, "Wait, uh, but you look good with them, too!" :o But you, Deanna, really do look good in your glasses, from the pics I've seen. :)

Mad4stevie 05-01-2005 11:40 AM

Contacts and glasses since 10th grade. My eyesight wasn't bad, back then! 20/25 in one eye and 20/40 in the other.

Law school and all that damn reading ruined my eyesight. Now I have 20/200 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. Needless to say, it is another reason to hate law school, after all those damn loans

I have astigmatism in both eyes as well. My left eye used to be worse, but now it's the right one. So, I have to wear toric lenses.

I think it might depend on how bad your vision is to begin with as to whether or not you would have to continue to wear glasses in certain lighting. I don't even know what mine is. It's usually stayed the same in both eyes throughout the years. What I do know is that throughout the years because i've worn contacts so frequently, my eyes have a problem getting oxygen and i'm developing some sort of problem with the vessels in my eyes so I was given a new brand of contact to try (Optix2). They're not dry as much and the problem is seeming to be less of a problem. Still, i'd rather not have to worry about it at all. Certain times during the year i'll stay in my glasses because I get allergy eye so badly and that usually helps with the vessel issue. If they could tell me that it would correct my vision completely, i'd do it when I had the available funds.

pianogirl04 05-01-2005 12:36 PM

I've been in glasses since I was 13 and I got contacts three years ago. They've bounced back and forth between having astigmatism and not having it; now I have it in one eye and I don't have to wear a toric lens for it but I chose to anyway... and who'd have known it would have given me depth perception? lol... It's a slight difference, but I can definitely tell there is one and I can judge distances better than I ever could before. Unfortunately my vision's also getting worse so without my other eyes I can only see about 3 feet before things get blurry.

ontheEdgeof17 05-01-2005 04:07 PM

I wear both. I've had glasses since 3rd grade and contacts since the 6th. I wear my contacts mostly, but wear my glasses when I want to look dorky and worldy.

CreepingDeath 05-01-2005 04:25 PM

I don't need glasses or contacts. I have perfect vision. :p

Hey, you were the same age as me for both. I was the first kid in my class to get contacts. It was one of my cooler moments.

golddustwoman77 05-01-2005 04:31 PM

I have worn contacts since my junior year in college. I started having problems early on in college, but I put it off and off. Finally it came to the point that I noticed I couldn't see the board in the back of the auditorium, so I talked to my then boyfriend-now husband about it. He checked my vision, and sure enough, I needed contacts. I couldn't believe how much better I could see; it was amazing. I wish I hadn't waited so long about getting it checked. I have been wearing contacts ever since for distance.

Hey! Me 2! I thought I was the cheese cuz I was the only one with contacts. Then everyone else got them....what losers!

I started wearing the dorky, library glasses first, too. Everyone had to follow in that, too.

I didn't want braces, but I had them anyway. In all honesty my teeth weren't even bad, but my mom's friend was a dentist and she got them for "a really great price".

I hated them and the time, but now I have perfect teeth to match my perfect vision. :p :p
