The Health and Fitness Thread

Hi guys. I know a lot of us are trying to lose weight and/or tone up so I thought I'd start this thread to maybe help motivate us. Right now my neck is killing me, is that a good enough excuse to skip the gym? Also, I'm so lethargic because it's frikkin hot here today. No, I'm not even kidding! It's like a summer day. They don't have the AC working right though so it is hard to concentrate being so hot.

Anyway, how's everybody doing with their bods? :D

DrummerDeanna 04-20-2005 04:45 PM

Well Saturday I finally kicked myself in the ass - got into some gym clothes and hit the gym full-force!!

I was SO excited when I got there (haven't been in two months) because they got some new ellipticals that are just like the ones I used back home -and they KICK ass - I get such an amazing workout- I mean sweat dripping great workout - the other cardio stuff there wasn't doing it for me....

Anyway - I have gone three days in a row - and I'm hurting :D My upper body was really sore yesterday - today I'm better - but I already feel much better

I am determined to not get too lumpy before my time...:D

amber 04-20-2005 04:46 PM

My calves are so sore, I can barely walk! But I walked to work, and I'm walking home, so hopefully the lactic acid buildup will be down enough so that I can jump rope again tomorrow. :) Update? - I'm still really muscly, with fat on top of it.  Oh, and of course my shoulders and arms are a bit sore from jumping rope, as well.
Edit - oh, and did you know your feet bones and ankle bones can get really sore? Yep, it's true!

WelshWitchPMD 04-20-2005 04:49 PM

I am trying to watch the 'sweet' intake. I had a low carb wrap at D'Angelo's today and it was not bad. I also tried the 100 calorie Wheat Thins and I like them. The 100 calorie Oreos are not that great but they are something to munch on at lunch.
I need to do something to get in better shape because I don't want to pass out in the desert while I am trying to get some photos. I am not going to join a gym but maybe I can do a bit of walking on my lunch.

That's my problem....after working out for almost two years straight - I was really muscly- so now that I've gained around 10-15 pounds - I'm still muscly - I just look more bulky...

AND I think my butt and legs look lumpy...people swear they don't but I'm afraid that they do :distress:

SuzeQuze 04-20-2005 04:53 PM

I took ibuprofen which took care of the neck pain so I will be going to the gym after all. Like right now. Sounds like you ladies are doing awesome. And Deanna, it's not lumpy, it's "curvy".

Also, Amber, I've discovered this shaper that takes care of the tummy and rear and it's awesome. I got it at the drug store in the panty hose section. Not that comfy but waaay better than panty hose because the legs don't go down to your feet, I hate that. It's pretty doable. I wore it out last night to keep things from marching to their own beat, so to speak. This could be a solution for that dress with which you aren't fully happy with the fit.

THank you, Suze. But there is no way I'm wearing a shaper! hehehehe. All my other dresses look fine, so. And I even have worn the green dress out, and danced in it, and flirted with two boys at once, so, It's not that bad. But thank you, I'll keep the idea in my files. I'm actually fairly solid, so that helps. :) Ibuprofen, great idea. Congrats on your gymness. I doubt I'll lose much, if any, weight before Vegas, but swimming season is right after, so.

I had a feeling,. And I, um, what? I don't wear those things! Hehe. Kewl, I bet the dress looks good. My skirt last night looked good without it too but I'm so paranoid about people thinking I look fat. Damn that looks harsh in black and white.

I'm sure it looked good. I try to minimize my fattitude, too, but there's only so much I can do. Which is basically try to wear flattering clothing. My least favorite thing is actually how my arms look. I used to love my arms, now i just like them, cause there is fat on them. :distress: Must.lose.arm.weight!

Well - there's a difference between curvy and lumpy  And sadly parts of me seem to be falling into that lumpy category

hmmm, maybe the ledge can be my source of motivation as well as entertainment? i'm completely frustrated right now. i live in florida now, having moved from new york. i used to walk everywhere, now i'm driving 100% of the time. i'm way too lazy to drive to the gym and walking around the block has already lost its appeal. oh, and i complain a lot... i eat really well, i don't count calories per se, but i am extremely aware of what i eat. what is the most fun exercise you guys get? i kayak frequently, makes me feel like i can crush the world in my mighty arms...

Get to the gym & remember: instead of high reps with light weights, it's LOW reps with HEAVY weights.

Do two sets with weights so heavy that you hit failure after five to eight reps. Move on to another body part, & then come back to that part one more time.

Every Monday, Wednesday & Friday -- rest on Tuesday, Thursday & the weekend (or do your aerobics) -- & within four months, you will be a metabolic machine that burns whatever calories you throw into it.

Build your musculature, & you can say goodbye to all those stupid liquid diets & low-carb diets & all that other horsewash. (In general, just eat foods closer to their raw or natural state -- cut back on all the cans of **** & bags of crap & cannisters of crud you eat)

It's stupid to count your calories going in ... unless you're also aware of the calories going out. And with weight training, believe me, thousands of calories each week will be going out.

estranged4life 04-20-2005 05:59 PM

Not good...

I am going to see the Dr. (Hopefully this Friday) to see what is causing the hellacious tight pain I am feeling (On a constant basis) in my chest...My Mother's side of the family has a history of heart ailments, So I am very concerned (Can ya believe we still do not have my Mother's death certificate and autopsy results??? I am PISSED about the slowness of these records since the hospital caused her death due to heart failure due to septic shock.)

Stress has taken it's toll on me this past month (At least I have enough pride to not hit the bottle or use drugs to escape the pain/stress, But my temper is now at a record all-time shortness)...If I can recover my health now it will truly be a miracle.

Well, kayaking would be my favorite, if I could go.... I have to rollerblade or walk everywhere, since I don't have a car. Rollerblading is very fun. Yoga is good, you can do that at home, with tapes. Also, Pilates, same thing, very challenging. Also, I just do exercises at home with my body weight - push ups, sit ups, leg ups (for the bun), calf ups - and i have 10 lb hand weights that I use as well. Also, a jump rope - I do it in my house or my yard - it's kick ass excercise, and easier on your joints than running. :wavey:

I'm glad you are having that checked out. Take care of yourself. :xoxo: I'm sure that it is all the stress you have been under for awhile. I was having chest pains at one time. It was all the stress I was under at school. Stress is the worst. It can totally kill you. Start meditating. :p

WildInTheWind 04-20-2005 06:25 PM

Ugghh....I hate working out. I try to make myself do pilates, but I usually don't. I will do it everyday for a week, and then cannot convince myself to do it for another month. I have to do it, though. Swim suit season is coming fast. I actually already wore one the other day. I hate hate hate working out though. :o

golddustwoman77 04-20-2005 06:44 PM

I do circuit training (continuous cardio and weight) for an hour, three times a week. I do Winsor Pilates the other three days, and I rest one day a week. Dietwise, I'm pretty close to being a vegetarian. I eat very little meat, if I do I only eat fish or free range chicken. It has worked well for me, but I have gone on these shots (one once a month) after my surgery to shrink my growth. It makes me menopausal as long as I am on the shots. That has caused me to gain a little weight, so now I'm having to try even harder. Hormones are such a great thing. It is so frustating!

Funny you should ask. I am going to the doctor tomorrow because of chronic hip/knee pain. Also, I suspect my thyroid is out of whack. I haven't been feeling right. :distress:
It is 44 degrees and hailing here right now.

Why not? because you value the use of your ankle bones? and calves.

strandinthewind 04-20-2005 07:05 PM

I am down to a looser size 34 - I had ballooned over Christmas to a tight 36. I continue the good fight and it is showing. I tell, it is all about portion control and exercise  I am glad to hear of the good reults and for the slackers (which I am often  ) - let's get with the program sports fans!!!!

Blah - that sucks, Brian...I'm sure the stress of the last month or so had most definitely NOT been helpful with your health stuff....

But I hope you start to feel better soon...my brother in law was having a constant tightness in his chest a while back - it was scary - I forgot what ended up being wrong with him...nothing too serious -I hope that it's nothing too serious in your case as well.

estranged4life 04-20-2005 07:47 PM

so too, But the pain has yet to reside, I have been popping aspirins to aleviate the pain but to no avail

The more BS my family is finding out about how our Mother died (I say murdered...) one month tomorrow, the more stressed I am becoming and the shorter my temper is becoming (The more agitated I am becoming the more pain I am encountering in my chest)

Brian, you have to go to a physician & tell him/her that you want a resting EKG. Did you ever have an opportunity to type up your family medical history & give it to a physician?

estranged4life 04-20-2005 08:05 PM

Had a 24 hour...

heart monitor last summer which the results were 'inconclusive'. The stress test (ie-Treadmill from hell!!!) did not show any abnormalities, But 2 separate EKG's showed some type of heart problem and the stress test & heart monitor were applied afterwards...Chest X-Rays showed nothing out of the ordinary & my blood work was normal.

I also gave my primary physician my family history...but I think he needs to investigate what is causing me the pain more throughly, I dont want to have to end up in the same situation that I just dealt with last month (The f**ktards of MRMC thought my Mother was having a heart condition after her initial surgery, and treated her for such, All the while ab-so-lute-ly F**KING overlooking a perforated bowel for 1 week (!!!) which caused septic shock which in turn caused my Mother to suffer complete heart failure...She died EXACTLY the same way Pope John Paul II died, Septic shock!)

Unfortunately the Dr. who performed those procedures on me is no longer employed at the hospital, So I am planning to see my Dr. yet again on Friday to see what the f**k is wrong with me...

Let's just say I am agitated to the point that if anyone gets on my nerves I will make an example out of them without a care

estranged4life 04-20-2005 08:08 PM

It is likely the extreme stress that is causing your pain. Your doctor may want to prescribe some anti-anxiety medication which I wouldn't discourage you from taking. You have suffered plenty.

I'm so sorry you are going through all of this, Brian. I wish there was something I could do. You and your family are often in my thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourself as best you can right now.

oh, another very important thing if you want to lose weight - BE SURE AND TAKE CALCIUM!!!!

EveryHour 04-20-2005 08:23 PM

I just discovered an incredible book called Eat Fat, Lose Fat and I can't recommend it enough. Even if you're freaked out by the title (can't blame you since the government has brainwashed us all into being phobic of consuming fat), I encourage you to check it out! Lack of QUALITY fat in the diet has slowly led to a number of health problems, most notably decline in mental health since cell walls are composed of fat and brain messages need fat to travel. Over a period of about 2 years, I have remarkably recovered from anxiety, depression, skin and digestive problems, and also lost about 30 pounds I didn't even realize I had on me! There is another book almost as good called The Good Fat Cookbook (which is actually more information than recipes). I tried Atkins for awhile to help with these problems, but it is so extreme that it is nearly impossible to stick to (therefore you end up in a terrible-for-you yo-yo situation as you continually try to return to the program only to fall of again), and I don't like the use of artificial sweeteners.
Hopefully I can help at least one Ledgie out there!!! :wavey:

Virgin coconut oil is a miracle, no joke. Check it out:
http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/vi...oconut_oil.htm

Two other amazing books are The Mood Cure and The Diet Cure by Julia Ross, especially if you have food/sugar addiction, eating disorder, thryoid or hormonal problems.

Yes!!! Especially coral calcium. It is an amazing product that helps alkalize your body, which is very important. Cancer cannot grow in an alkaline environment. :)

Excellent. Your previous advice was very sound, as well. I always knew, but I shall seek those books. I've never really taken up coconut milk...lots of avacadoes, olives, olive oil, salmon, mainly. (in unfortunate addition to chip fat   )

For those of you watching the sugar, I also have to recommend a natural sugar substitute called xylitol, which actually has health benefits:

A sweet herb called stevia ( not a joke!) also works well in beverages:

(I agree that the occasional...okay, sometimes frequent...binge on chip fat is essential to everyone's existence!!! )
