Happy 2nd Birthday Say You Will!!!! Two Whole years ago it came out!!!!
 

Can you beleive it has been 2 years since SYW came out (April 15, 2003)? It doesn't seem that long to me. So, now that we have had the album for several years, what are everyones feelings on the album?

I am finding the album more and more romantic as time goes on. When you really start listening to the lyrics you can really understand all the layers. Like SYW- it such a romantic song. Being so in love with someone that "you become someone else in an instant" is just such a cool thought. A lot of the songs I never liked, like Red Rover, I am now in love with. Thrown Down is another song I was never too keen on. But I love it now! The lyrics are so beautiful.

What are your thoughts on the album after all this time?

I think the lyrics to the song SYW are brilliant and they make me and others at once just feel happy, which is what she said her intent was in that she was writing about being in love so much that you just want to burst into song because you are so happy.

I think SYW is the end of an era. It is not my fav. record by them, but it is one I cherish.

What do you mean the end of the era? And don't say they will never make a record again because I will start crying!

I think age must be considered. At the historical rate they go, LB and La Nicks will be at least 60 and Mick even older. Not that they cannot be great at that age, but a long long world tour would be more difficult. Plus, they are not exactly in a hurry now to get back together. So, we shall see. Personally, I would love one more record.

I'm as enamoured with the album as ever. Still listen to it almost as frequently as I did when it was first released.

Even the three songs I wasn't wild about... "Red Rover," "Silver Girl," and "Say Goodbye"... have all grown on me considerably.
(I should say that I always loved the lyrics and vocals for "Say Goodbye," I just wasn't crazy with the way Lindsey chose to approach the song. I felt that the vocal melody and the guitar melody sounded as if they were going two different directions, and worked against each other. So I used one of my computer programs to slow it down a *smidge*... similar to the tempo of the live versions... and it's now a favorite.)

It's a great album, and, much like 'Tusk,' it requires an investment from its listeners... but it pays off in spades. :)

HB, Say You Will! I really like this album, I think it is stellar. It's been on heavy rotation on my ishuffle. Except Silver Girl, of course...Lindsey's contributions are especially brill, IMO. I can't get enough of Miranda, Steal Your Heart Away (which makes me both happy and sad, and the melody is just gorg.) Murrow, Come, Red Rover. Uberyummy. And from La Nicks, RTTG, Thrown Down, Goodbye Baybeh...so, so, lovely. *sigh*. <3

That's exactly what I think about Say Goodbye! I think the guitar is brill, the vocal is brill, but together I don't love them. :wavey:

i loved this album when it came out and in the last two years it has left my disc changer... never. i hate 'silver girl' just as much as i did when i first heard it, the flute is cool but i still hate it. the rest is great IMO and it is definitely right up there with Tusk as most-listened-to-in-its-entirety-minus-silver-girl album. SYW (the song) immediately makes my day better and when i hear it while shopping, i feel like it's a message straight from stevie "buy that shirt mariel, buy it..."

I LOVE the album. There is a song to listen to for just about any mood I might be in at any given moment. And if I'm in a bad mood (and need a pick-me-up, for instance), a quick Miranda/Say You Will blast does the trick every time.

My only regret? That the album wasn't LONGER with MORE SONGS, say a second disc with 18 or 19 more tunes. :nod: :laugh:

My hate for Silver Girl has yet to wane. It remains a fly in the ointment of an otherwise amazing album. I continue to hail Everybody Finds Out as the coolest song ever. It's just so damn scandalous.

What's the World Coming To- I haven't been able to listen to it the same way ever since I read it was about Lindsey and the record business. How dull. Love Stevie on it, though.

Murrow- Kicks ass.

Illume- I like how Stevie went out on a limb with this song, but I don't care for the song itself. With the exception of one verse, the lyrics blow chunks.

Thrown Down- Never liked it, never will.

Miranda- Love it. I love his vocals.

Red Rover- One of my favorite Lindsey songs ever.

Say You Will- No, I won't.

Peacekeeper- Good song, but I prefer the solo version. I don't skip it, though, and do enjoy it.

Come- Have mercy.

Smile At You- Blows the old demo out of the water.

Running Through the Garden- Plastic production, but it's a fun song and I love it. The lyrics are cheesy as hell, but hey.

Silver Girl- Not the greatest song, but not the monstrosity it's made out to be.

Steal Your Heart Away- Great song. Not much to it.

Bleed To Love Her- Gag me.

Everybody Finds Out- Fun. That's about it. And it has her best vocal in years. Someone lit a fire under her ass in the studio, that's for sure.

Destiny Rules- Grew on me a lot, I love it now.

Say Goodbye- My favorite on the album.

Goodbye Baby- Her best song in years. Love the whisper vocal and it's hard to believe it's the same song from those crappy old demos.

Wow, I forgot about Destiny Rules and Illume. Not a big fan. Neither one is near as whoreanus (stupid sixsixsix! :laugh: ) as Silver Girl. I believe I literally never listen to those three. When I say "I love the album", I realize, in my head, the album doesn't include these song.... :laugh:

I think Illume runs cricles around Silver Girl in terms of whoreanusness! :laugh: That song is almost unlistenable. The drone, the lyrics, the music, the freaky voice in the middle of it that seems to be there for no reason, etc. It would be embarrassing if it wasn't so laughable.

That's weird, I'm pretty sure you said you really liked Illume when SYW first came out.

I dislike them both, so you won't get much argument from me. But I do think that Silver Girl's lyrics are worse, and that Illume's music and melody is a bit better. I never listen to either one, though.

Dissention, how could you change your mind so radically on these songs? It almost seems like you made an intellectual choice not to like them that had little to do with your emotional response to the song.... :confused:

I did like it. I still stand by my assertion that the verse with the jade line is one of her very best lyrics, too, and her delivery at the end is great. But the song? Not so much. I came to not like how she wrote about 9/11, which if you do another search (I can never get anything to come up past April or March of last year when the board got a new look), we had a big discussion on after the album came out, too. :xoxo:

I'm not free to change my mind? I used to loathe and despise Red Rover with every fiber of my being, and now I love it. You don't have songs that you hated at first and then loved, or songs you loved at first and then hated? I mean, c'mon, this album came out two years ago. We've all had it long enough for our opinions on it to mature.

I still love that one quite a bit because they (whoever remixed it) sped up her vocals and it makes the song more upbeat and reduces the drone. The rain noise effects are still crap, though.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to attack you, it was just confusing. And I usually don't like songs, then they grow on me, rarely, if ever, the reverse. I can't remember a time when I was like "I LOVE THAT SONG!" and then later didn't like it... :confused:
Of course you can change your mind, it was just strange to me, the way you did it, so I was trying to understand what happened there. :)

Well, I'm fickle. ;)

Owning it for two years and listening to it numerous times over those years opened my eyes as to how mediocre the whole thing is. They didn't think any of it through and it definitely shows, especially in the case of Illume. What were they going for with that computerized voice? Where is the melody? Why does it come across as so self-centered? Why does she think a river is neverending? It all seems a bit slapdash at times.

SYW is a solid album, but not my favorite. I would have rather had Lindsey's songs on GOS. :nod: (Still not too fond of "Come" though, although I love it live.) And "Bleed to Love Her" was a waste.

I enjoy most of Stevie's songs. I detest "Illume" (what the hell is with that percussion?) and I think EFO is childish. But I now adore "Destiny Rules," which I hated when the album first came out.

I'm only having a bit of fun :)

More power to ya, dear. I just wish you'd find that long thread we had regarding Illume a long while back, because whenever I search for things, I can never get anything past last year. We talked about that ridiculous computerized voice (I remember Gaius said he thought it was Lindsey's attmept at levity, or something along those lines) and how it stacked up against other 9/11 songs (poorly, IMO). One thing I remember about it was that Carne said she was an idiot for comparing human life to jade and diamonds. :laugh:

I like Silver Girl, but SYW is so blah. She sings so low on that song. Would it have killed her to write another verse? And those kids drive me mad. I was gagging when they showed them being recorded on Destiny Rules.
