Comments & Questions about Cleveland, OH 4-20-80
 

This show is currently being made available. I've downloaded and listened to the first half. Here is my question:

I've always wondered about this show. The "Live" album lists that "Not That Funny," "Go Your Own Way," and "I'm So Afraid" are from this show. Yet, in the tour list, there is no Cleveland show. The closest thing is two shows in Richfield, OH on May 20-21. The Cleveland show posted online as May 20. So is Richfield, perhaps a suburb, just being referenced as Cleveland?


Here are my comments:
Regardless...since this show was obviously recorded professionally for the impending Live album, the sound is great!!

For all the sweetening that was done on the tracks, it was nice to hear that "Not That Funny" sounds amazingly similar to the released version. The only difference is that Mick's pointless drum solo at the end of the song was wisely edited out. I haven't heard the other two songs to make a comparison.

The previous four months of touring really show this band at it's most aggressive and confident peak. This is not The Dance. This is five road warriors on fire. The songs are performed with rock and roll grit. It's great! Lindsey plays his guitar like a madman. Their performance of "The Chain" is extreme...the ending guitar jam goes on and on in maniac fashion, predating his solo on "Come."

Stevie, though, is in a very peculiar "state of mind." Perhaps she was just bored singing the songs the same way night after night, but her renditions don't enhance the performances in any positive way. She strays a lot from the recorded versions, which could be a good thing, but not here.

Her phrasing is off all over the place. Granted, she takes some adventurous chances, but it comes off as odd, sloppy and inaccessible. -- much like she did on the Rock A Little tour. And she mostly just blurts out the lyrics in a very monotone voice. She sings "Dreams" and "Sara" like you never heard before (and wouldn't want to hear again.) I'm glad she eventually abandoned this approach.

Still, I love this very energized show! So happy that it's being shared for ardent fans to enjoy. It's an amazing representation of the band at that point in time.

Richfield is Cleveland, roughly. It's like saying Mansfield is Boston or Alpine Valley is Chicago or Inglewood is Los Angeles. Same shows.
I don't know what you've got there, but the show they just put up on the torrent site is not pro recorded -- it's audience. It's good audience, but it's audience.
It was an acquired taste for a few of us.

Here are the recording details from the guy that recorded the show:

"I am the one who recorded the Mac show from 5-20-80. I used a Marantz
stereo cassette recorder , a Realistic stereo condensor microphone and
it was recorded on TDK SA tapes. Go Your Own Way is cut because I ran
out of tapes unfortunately.We were seated along side the stage directly
in line with the overhead PA . I always thought it was one of my best
recordings. Sorry I ran out of tape! Hope that answers your questions."

Wow. Audience recording or not...it sounds great. Still, the fact remains, Fleetwood Mac had various Tusk shows professionally recorded. The Cleveland show, evident from the 3 tracks included on the LIVE album, was one of them. Wonder if the soundboard recordings of those shows will ever surface.

i hope so. this is an awesome show and these downloads blow away the version i had on tape. there's a lot of raw energy in these performances from the later Tusk shows that really prove this band could rock out, despite their reputation as a commercial "MOR" band.

A DVD release is desperately needed of one of the Tusk tour gigs. Listen to Lindsey's guitar on I'm So Afraid! It nearly matches his playing on the Chicago show for me.

Holy crap! When you pull LB's songs from this including The Chain this is a pure grunge-rock-show!

I'm from Cleveland, so I can give a bit more detail. Richfield is where the old Coliseum used to be. It's where all the big stadium shows played in the Cleveland area. It's about 20 miles south of the city, not even in the same county, and is almost rural... I'd hesitate to even call it a suburb.
Now Cleveland has Gund Arena downtown, so that's where all the big acts play. The Coliseum has been torn down and the land incorporated into Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Probably more info than you wanted, but there you go!

I'm not finding it. I looked on older updates - is it identified as Cleveland? I'll go look again.

It's just one of those situations where the liner notes just jump to the nearest megalopolis. Even the members of the band do that: playing Richfield Coliseum, Lindsey says, "Thanks a lot, Cleveland!"

Or Stevie says, "Good evening, Boston" in Mansfield. As long as PenguinHead knows that the Richfield Coliseum shows recorded for the "Live" album & filmed for 20/20 are the "Cleveland" shows.

I figured that was probably the case, but I'm not too familiar with Ohio. Now I am!

..it's interesting observation ,as I am listening to "live in Sydney 1980" and find the exact same thing..alot of her songs are practically unrecognisable as the "norm", theyr'e everwhere! Lindsey also appears to be in an odd state of mind with his solos as well, but I look at these as rather refreshingly different :nod: On the other hand Christine seems to carry on her usual normal way and hold it altogether..this coupled with Sodascouts recent NTF Tusk tour download, makes me think it must have been an interesting tour for sure :laugh: , somewhat crazy..haha

For some reason Go Your Own Way is incomplete. Is this is a problem with the site or is that the best we can get?
