"THE" Song of the 80s

Yeah, I know that if there hardly may be a top song of a year, it's impossible to choose a top song of a decade, it's absurd. But let's play just for fun.

Choose your top song, the favorite, the greatest greatest hit of all songs from the 80s.

Ok, since you are a mac fan, pick 2 songs: a mac(or mac-related, i mean single works) song and a not mac related song.

-mac: GYPSY
-non mac: Hold me now (Thompson twins)

I guess I'll go with "Gypsy" for the Mac.

For all of the 80s? I don't know. The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"? I'm a huge fan of Modern English's "I Melt With You," too. I don't know. Too many. And lots that I don't know because I was so young then.

cliffdweller 04-08-2005 01:29 PM

I know he's not popular right now, but I'd have to say either "Beat It" or "Billie Jean." When I think of the 80's I can't help but think of the Thriller album.

U2's "Pride (In the Name of Love)"

1. A superbly produced track
2. A great melody & structure
3. Brilliant performances, instrumentally & vocally
4. Political power -- the awakening conscience of unity & excoriation of racism that elements of 1980s culture tried to pretend wasn't a problem
5. Hugely popular & respected
6. Brilliantly conceived all around by a band at the top of its game -- to use that overworked phrase (but genuine in this case), "the voice of a generation" -- can stand proudly (Pride, get it?) beside the earlier quintessential voices, like the Who & the Beatles of the 1960s. Most of '80s pop didn't have anything like this level of commitment & passion. "Pride" wipes the floor with most of the '80s output in both Europe & the U.S.

Mac: Gypsy/Little Lies
Non-Mac: Purple Rain (Prince)

Mac: Little Lies
Non-Mac: Call Me

xdreamsunwindx 04-08-2005 02:30 PM

Mine's deffinitely "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by the Simple Minds. It's one of my favorite songs of all time. It just defines 80s music, in my opinion. And besides, the vocal is like buttah. Mmmm. SexVoices.

FM-related would prolly be Hold Me.

skcin 04-08-2005 02:37 PM

Mac - Gypsy

Stevie - Stand Back

Non-Mac - Tainted Love (I'm not that big a fan, but it's so totally 80's. Like, totally. )

wondergirl9847 04-08-2005 03:14 PM

YAY!!! I love the 80's!!!

Non-Mac: Thriller - The song, the album, the video, all of it....represents the 80's to me.

Mac: Again, I wasn't around for this, so I will guess Gypsy.

Dark Angel 04-08-2005 03:18 PM

FM - Gypsy
Stevie - Stand Back
Non-Mac - Pretty In Pink (The Psychedelic Furs) & I Melt With You (Modern English)

Serrart 04-08-2005 05:55 PM

Mac - Storms... One day later I realized that was 1979 :p so... Little Lies
Stevie - Stand Back
Others (for many reasons):
Police - Every Breath You Take
Prince - Purple Rain
Eurythmics - Here comes the rain again
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Cure - Friday I'm in Love
The Smiths - Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
Culture Club - Victims
U2 -Pride
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me

Runner up :D :
Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire

Romy

CelticGypsy 04-08-2005 07:26 PM

Fleetwood Mac.................Gypsy; Little Lies

Stevie Nicks.....................Edge of Seventeen; Stand Back

Non FM............................Faith by George Michael; The Reflex by Duran Duran

Can't think of the 80's without George Michael or Duran Duran. They were huge rock/pop stars then.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned the Springster. I love BITUSA, and it was a huge album. Not a bad song on it, IMO. Well, maybe one or two I don't like quite as much.

Mad4stevie 04-08-2005 08:03 PM

Take On Me - I loved that song as a teen! I remember that the video was so cool for that time!

I Want Your Sex - my mom saw my George Michael tape and threw it out

Stand Back - still my favorite solo Stevie song

Gypsy - a classic

jannieC 04-08-2005 09:03 PM

Stevie- I Can't Wait
The Cure- I'll Run Away With You (that may have been early 90's, actually)

I was really into the heavy metal scene in the 80's- (I graduated high school in '86, bear with me) along with all the other cheesy 80's music.

:nod::nod::nod:

I imagine I've said this before, but what about when he says "Early morning, April 4"? King was shot in the evening. (Not that I don't LOVE the song; I'm just being picky. I've always wondered about that).

catinthedark 04-08-2005 11:44 PM

The two songs that scream 80s for me....

Don't You Want Me - Human League
Tainted Love - Soft Cell

Stevie-wise, I'd have to say Stop Draggin' My Heart Around.
FM.... Hold Me. One of the first videos I ever saw on MTV.

Those four just send me straight back....

Actually, the song you're reffering to is Just Like Heaven, from 1987's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. At least I'm pretty sure that's the album it's from. Great song.

Yes, that's it! :) And even though I wasn't completely "into" The Cure at the time, hearing any of their music really reminds me of the 80's.
