Anybody gone to a concert you knew nothing about the band?
Has anybody gone to a concert too see someone you had noe clue about, I mean just to go with friends or something? I am going to see Motley Crue in april, some people from work are taking me. I mean I can honestly only name one song......... Girls gilrs girls. I hope its a good show...
So what about you guys. |
Yep
I went to see Mad at the World, a Christian rock band, with my cousins. It is my cousin, Michelle's favorite band and I had only heard their tape a couple of times and remembered one song. It was a fun (and very loud since it was in a tiny little club) show though.

That basically is the description for all those dumb day-long festivals that we went to in high school. I would want to see one band, but have to sit through a dozen others. Sometimes I'd recognize a hit single, but that's it!
|
I saw the GoGos a few weeks back here in Orlando. I knew their hit songs. Didn't know their story or anything...they were a WILD bunch of women to say the least. I since actually bought "Vacation" and "God Bless the GoGos." Not too bad. They were punky and pop at the same time. I was surprisingly impressed.

I went to a Vans Warped Tour show to see Juliette and the Licks (who I adore) with a few friends, and I had to endure what seemed like days of the worst bands and music imaginable before seeing them. I was ready to gas myself to end the misery. I probably wouldn't be able to tell you a single one of the bands, either. And it was so dirty and grubby and foul, just unpleasant to an extreme degree.

I won Bette Midler tickets for her 'Kiss My Brass' show. I only knew a few of her songs before going, but I had a blast anyway. It was steller.
BTW- I think you'll have a good time at Motley Crue. They're definitely jackasses, but usually put on a decent show. Vince Neil will probably sound like **** though, like he always does IMO. I saw them in '98 and had a pretty good time, considering the amount of mullet sporting, Aqua Net wearing, drunkin' idiots that were in the crowd. |

The first time I saw Sarah McLauchlan live, it was because my boyfriend at the time loved her. I went, expecting to be bored out of my mind.
:] You haven't heard Sarah til you've heard her live. |
First time I went to see Beth Hart I knew nothing about her. A friend asked me to go, I never turn down a concert! Since then I've seen her two more times. I'm a fan! If you get the chance, go see her. Best rock concert I've been to in a long time.

Oh, I used to have that as a habit of mine a few years ago, go see small acts at one particular local place. Most of the times I ended up unimpressed, even though I didn't have high expectations. I can't be that demanding, can I? :p
|
i formerly had a friend who worked for a record label and he always tossed tix my way. we ended up going to a show last winter with gavin degraw and maroon 5, neither of whom i'd heard (this was waaay before 'this love'). i left two songs in because i COULD NOT STAND the people there. i felt slightly bad leaving, as there were dozens of kids outside trying to get in and i couldn't pass my tix along. blech, nothing more than a boyband IMO.
on the flip, saw norah jones several years ago in a piano bar. amazing show, def. impressed. now... she's lost a little flavor IMO. oh, and dropkick murphys. |

Is she still around!?! I got one of her albums a few years ago - and the L.A. Song came out...I think that was her only hit  Is she more popular outside the U.S.? |
A friend once invited me to see Third Eye Blind - free...so I went - I'd only heard that one song lol...um the "do do do do do dodo..." lol....I can't even think of the name....I wasn't blown away -but I really can't complain either as the concert was free and overall I did enjoy it.
I knew NOTHING about Michelle Branch when I saw her open for Sheryl Crow - but I was impressed by her and now own both her albums. In 1998ish I bought a ticket to the Liluth Fair JUST for Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow - then Sheryl canceled.. I sat through Sinead O'Connor, The Indigo Girls and Natalie Merchant knowing only radio hits from Sinead and Natalie...wasn't familiar with the Indigo Girls material...I totally enjoyed them all though....Still Sarah was the best :D  |
A friend of mine dragged me kicking and screaming to a Radiohead show in 2001, on their Amnesiac tour. I had only ever heard "Creep" and "Fake Plastic Trees" and was not thrilled by the thought of 2 hours of whiney depresso-pop.
I left the concert a changed person. It was the loudest (but in a good way), most intense concert experience I've ever had. Sure, they threw in a few of the more subdued numbers, and by the time those songs rolled around I was glad cuz I needed to catch my breath. We saw them at the Woodlands amphitheater in Houston, and were sitting at the bottom of the hill. When the band started playing, the crowd leapt to their feet, and this guy about 20 feet behind me starting screaming "Sit down! Sit down!". I guessed he was expecting a subdued experience as well. But I looked back at one point in the show during a *very* upbeat number, and that dude was UP and dancing! |
Well...
I took my mom to two FM concerts during the SYW tour and she asked me for a CD of their stuff. She LOVES Don't Stop. LOL I called her during the song at The Woodlands. :)
Every time she hears FM at her job, she thinks about me and lets me know later on. Heh....hooked another one!! I got my dad hooked on Rumours by playing him the Audio-DVD one day. When we go on a trip or something, he's all "Bring FM and Mamas and the Papas." |
Not so much from a headliners standpoint, but I've become a fan of MANY opening acts I had previously never heard of, such as:
Little Feat (seemed like they were the opener for just about every concert I went to between 1973-1978; but the first time I saw them, I was just floored how good they were!) Van Halen (opened for Santana at the Long Beach Arena in 1975...can you say "Eruption"? ) Rick Vito (opened for John Mayall at a show at the Golden Bear nightclub in Huntington Beach, CA in 1979...10x's better than Mayall, I thought at the time. Obviously, was THRILLED when he joined Fleetwood Mac...as most of you know by now. ) Climax Blues Band (the fellow British blues band that opened for Fleetwood Mac at the Long Beach Arena in 1974) (about 4 years before their massive disco/funk hit "Couldn't Get It Right" put 'em on the charts in the USA) Sanford Townsend Band (opened for Fleetwood Mac on much of the Rumours tour...it was the first time I'd heard "Smoke From A Distant Fire"...seemed like the next day, the song was on the Billboard charts) The Cruzados (opened for Fleetwood Mac on the "Shakin' The Cage" tour in 1987...went out & bought both of their CDs the next day) |

Ha, first time I run into someone here who knows here  |
Many, many times. I always see a bunch of bands during SXSW that I've never heard of and don't know what to expect. I didn't know what to expect at the Billy Idol show, but let's just say that I was pleasantly surprised. That quite possibly is the most fun I've ever had at a show bar none.
