How would we feel?
 

I was watching the TV news the other night and along came the usual bit about Michael Jackson and his trial. Many of his fans were outside the court showing their support and I must admit my first thought was "nutters".

Then I thought how would I feel if one of FM had been accused of something so horrendous as that?

I personally would be mortified if there was the slightest hint of that kind of behaviour. I mean we all know they've behaved badly in the past (sex and drugs and rock 'n roll) but I don't know how I'd react to an accusation of that nature. Not that I'm suggesting for one minute that it could ever be a possibility.

I don't have a problem seperating the person from their work, i.e. I think MJ's as guilty as they come, but I still own and listen to his music. So if a member of FM were to be charged with similar allegations, it'd be extremely hard to hear/watch but I wouldn't go destroy my collection. Nor would I be picketing outside the courthouse...

Wow - that's actually an interesting question - because in the case of MJ - or a crime like he allegedly committed...I can't separate the man from the crime - because I'd feel like my support of him would contribute to a child molester or something...

Like I wouldn't see the movie Powder because one of the producers or something was supposedly convited of child molestation?? :shrug:

So I'd be really upset if a Mac member or other entertainer I liked was accused of something like that - I don't know how I'd feel or what I'd do...

One thing I know FOR SURE is that I would not be outside of a courtroom showing "support" or cheering them on or whatever...I don't personally know the people and therefore would feel no need to be near the courtroom...

same goes for me...I like alot of musicians for their musical work though I absolutely hate their political/social views.

I have no problem separating musical work from a person's FUBAR personal life...What they do in their own personal non-entertaining me musically life is their own buz-i-ness, And if they are found guilty of a felony oh well, Ya do the crime you do the time (I know that from personal experience :nod: )

That is a really good question. I think that if any member of FM was accused of such a thing, I wouldn't be able to immediately jump to their defence or immediately be ready to convict. The whole MJ thing has been bubbling under for years and years, and there is much evidence that had many people wondering long before the charges were laid. I guess I would want to hear the evidence. But I certainly wouldn't offer my blind support before I knew what the investigators found out. If one of them was ever convicted of a major crime (sexual abuse, murder, etc.), it would truly shatter my respect and admiration for them. I don't think I'd be able to separate the art from the crime. It would forever tarnish their music and everything I'd ever felt about it for me. Shudder at the thought.

Well - I have no problem separating political views etc....but child molestation!?! that's a pretty severe thing....and I don't think I could separate that....

I mean Loretta Lynn is a Republican ....great goo for her - I don't care, I love her music....but if she started molesting children...I'd totally have a problem with that...:shrug:

just agreeing with y'all is all...I still have Wacko Jacko's music, Will have it no matter the outcome of his trial (ie-"Money talks and the BULL**** walks" :shrug: )

lol...I don't either...I've actually never like Michael Jackson so really it doesn't matter one way or the other what happens to him...I'm sure to many it does...but for me....I could care less and really wish he and this story would just go away already - I'm sick of seeing his nasty face all over the tv :p

I don't know how I'd feel. But, then again, some of his fans are scarey with their loyalty. I heard one lady basically said that MJ was her spiritual leader, that he was her reason for being. Now, I love the Mac, but only for their music and their interesting story.

I think about this also sometimes. I understand that people feel like you should be able to seperate the professional from the personal in the case of entertainers. In cases where a crime may have been committed against someone else though, I feel differently, and especially when it's against a child.
I think if something like this were to happen to a member of the Mac, most peoples reaction would be shock and disbelief, but in the case of MJ, he has been establishing a pattern of deviant behavior for quite a while now. It is for that reason that I am a little bit surprised at the blind faith of his fans.

The closest one of the Mac'ers committed a big crime was when John and his wife got arrested because a package of coke and firearms was sent to his house. They were innocent after a lie detector test. How would you all react if charges were brought against them.

I was thinking about this the other day. If Stevie was accused of anything that dispicable I would never beleive it and would back her 100 percent. Of course, Stevie seems like a warm person to me and I could never imagine her deliberately hurting someone. Michael Jackson comes off as a perverted freak who belongs in a straight jacket and a paded cell. So, I really can not compare them I guess.

I think he owned the firearms; he said he was unaware of the US laws regarding licenses etc; otherwise he would have complied. He did pass the lie detector test that he had no knowledge of the cocaine in his house, (although his wife tried to flush the stuff so apparently someone knew it was in the house LOL.) I don't think she had to take a lie detector test... But I believe John could have been deported if things did not go well.

Those charges are very different (and much more forgivable IMO) from what is going on in the MJ case.

When someone intentionally and willfully harms a child, they're dead to me.
It's the one thing I find absolutely unforgivable. No ifs, ands, or buts.

So that would apply to anyone in Fleetwood Mac, too.

I, too, would be DONE with the member that molested the child. If the band retained that member, I'd be done with the band.
I do believe MJ to be seriously mentally ill. (duh)

Lots of very interesting responses.

I think it seems to be coming down to whether you can separate someone's behaviour from their music and also whether with something so horrible as child abuse you should even try.

I once owned a Gary Glitter CD (British Glam Rock star of the 70's) - it was just a phase OK? when he was convicted of downloading child porn I threw it away. Actually the music was so dire I should have thrown it away for that reason alone!

Interesting topic. I did think about this, in length, several years ago when Waddy Wachtel was rumoured to have child porn on his computer. I started thinking about Stevie and how I would feel about her if she kept Waddy on **if** he was guilty. (which he was NOT...btw) It did make me think about the band members and what I would do if any of them were ever involved in a crime like that......I guess I would want to know all the facts. I do not think I would judge them based on what the news media told me about the situation...I would want to know the real deal, as in what the investigation found. If any of them was ever proven to have harmed a child...I would lose all respect and probably never be able to listen to their music again without associating it to the event.

There have been some accusations about LB being violent to Stevie and/or Carol Ann Harris. Whether they're true or not (I guess we'll never know completely), when I first heard about those things I did feel quite disappointed. I find that a lot more serious than owning drugs or firearms, but nowhere near to child molestation though..
I can separate music from people but still, it get's a different ring, doesn't it? Songs seem meaningful, you think you feel a connection to the artist, and then that person turns out to be not quite what you thought he was.
I wouldn't be like those jacko-fans who stand by him whatever, though. I can like the music, but whatever the artist does as a person, that's his responsibility.

I can't believe his movie Clownhouse is still in print. The kid he molested is the star of it and it's an incredibly disturbing movie because he constantly films the kids ass and lingers on him with his shirt off and the like. What a disgusting individual. I can only imagine the humiliation and pain that kid endures to this day. :mad:

If one of the members of Fleetwood Mac were accused and convicted of such a crime, I don't think I could remain a fan. The thought of what they had done would be in the back of my mind whenever I hear any of their work.

I can say this with quite a bit of confidence because that's what happens whenever I hear or see a picture of Chuck Berry. All that goes through my mind is the thought of those disgusting tapes he had from the women's bathroom in his restaurant. And I get the same feeling with Michael Jackson or for that matter, when I hear "Rock and Roll part 2" by Gary Glitter (who was found in posession of child pornography).

Politics and personal life are one thing. I don't care what a person's political beliefs are, nor do I care who they get in bed with, what drugs they take, or whatever. Weapons posession, unruly behavior, even physical fighting I can overlook. Any sort of sexual crime, however, is just too utterly disgusting to turn a blind eye to no matter how much I may love an artist's work.

Ugh - yet another reason not to go near that movie..I should be more vigilant in what he's involved in because I also refuse to contribute any money to anyone who perpetrates a crime against a child....:mad: sicko.

If it was one of the main members, I'm not sure what I'd do. Probably listen to their old stuff, but not continue to support them by purchasing merchandise, new material or concert tix. I certainly would not hang around outside the courthouse screaming like a lunatic.

In the case of supporting band members (like when Waddy was accused of the computer thing) that's a bit different. Why would I stop seeing/supporting Stevie just because one of her friends/employees/band members is evil? (I'm not implying that Waddy is evil. As Kelly mentioned, it was unfounded. It's just an example.) Maybe if Stevie was onstage yelling about how she loves that person & they're just misunderstood blah blah blah, then I might be pissed.

so far it looks to me like the prosecution is a bunch of money hungry liars and their case is getting blown away. and although I'm much a fan of MJ's music I want the truth to come out be it guilty or innocent. That being said.....I just think he's not a very smart person and he puts himself in bad situations but I think he's innocent of the alleged crimes.
