The celebrity homemaker bids good-bye to "Camp Cupcake"; heads for upstate New York home.
March 4, 2005: 12:31 AM EST
By Krysten Crawford, CNN/Money staff writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Martha Stewart, the lifestyle expert whose own life has been consumed by scandal in recent years, was released at 12:30 a.m. Friday from a prison in West Virginia.

Stewart spent the last five months at the minimum-security prison for women convicts in Alderson, W. Va. known as "Camp Cupcake." She was expected to go to a local airport, where she will begin her 550-mile journey home.

Next week marks the one-year anniversary of Stewart's conviction on felony charges related to a personal stock sale. Last summer she was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home detention, followed by two years of probation.

Stewart was due to fly on a chartered plane that will take her near her upstate New York estate. She will now wear an ankle monitor as she serves the home confinement portion of her sentence.

Stewart's official return to the public eye will be big news, and she apparently is ready to relish the moment.

Her company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, planned to provide a flatbed truck so media images of her boarding her plane could be broadcast around the world, CNN learned earlier this week.

She was not expected to address the media, but would post a statement on her personal Web site upon her release, said a company spokeswoman.

It's a dramatic turnaround from last October when Stewart, a convicted felon, her image obviously bruised, slipped unnoticed into the minimum-security prison in Alderson, W. Va., known as "Camp Cupcake."

She could have stayed out of prison, possibly for good, if she had waited until a court ruled on her still-pending appeal. But she said she wanted to put the nearly three-year-old ordeal behind her, both for her sake and for that of her company, which has been bleeding money because of her legal woes.

The comeback kid?
Prison apparently has done wonders for Stewart. News reports have said she's lost weight and been a model prisoner. In the beginning she reached out to the public with letters posted on her Web site discussing her daily life behind bars, the bad prison food, and federal sentencing guidelines, which she thinks treat first-time offenders unfairly.

After making so many wrong moves throughout her criminal case, Stewart finally started making some right ones.

Marketing experts say the smartest of all was the decision to go to prison early, a sacrifice that signaled the beginning of the end of the whole debacle.

"In May 2002, if you asked me anything about Martha Stewart, all of my responses would have been positive," said marketing expert Robert Passikoff, referring to the early stages of the Stewart scandal.

But her open defiance after her 2003 indictment, as well as damaging testimony at trial, hurt her image considerably, Passikoff said. "It wasn't just that she was found guilty. She was also found to be mean-spirited."

By going to prison early, Stewart turned herself from "villain to victim," he said.

Hence, marketing experts said, the warm homecoming she's getting -- not just from the media, which has splashed Stewart all over newspapers and magazines all week, but also from her company, which not long ago seemed to be distancing herself from Martha.

Investors, too, are cheering. Stock in Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (Research) has more than quadrupled, to around $34, from the day she was sentenced last July. The shares are near their all-time high, a big boost for Stewart who still controls a majority of the company's stock.

But leaving Camp Cupcake doesn't mean Stewart's rehabilitation is over. For starters, she'll spend the next five months confined to her Bedford, N.Y. estate, wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. She'll be on probation for two years after that.

There's also much work to be done turning around her company, which just posted its second straight annual loss after losing advertisers, a television show, and investing in products minus Stewart's name, like "Everyday Food" magazine.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has already announced plans to have Stewart write a column for the company's flagship Martha Stewart Living magazine. Also filling up her schedule: She's scheduled to star in two television shows next fall and there are rumors of plans to launch a clothing line.

Stewart also faces a Securities and Exchange Commission insider trading case that seeks to bar her from serving as an officer or director of any public company, including her own. Rumors of a settlement that would allow Stewart to return to the helm of Martha Stewart Living were rampant last week.

Last but not least, there's the appeal of her conviction on four felony counts of lying and obstructing justice. Oral arguments are set for March 17, according to a source close to Stewart.

Definitely. I was a witch hunt all the way.

I'm so pathetic I was up till 1 AM last night watching the coverage..she was supposed to leave Alderson at 12:01 AM, her car rolled out at like 12 :30, then I just HAD to wait up and watch her get out at the airport by her private jet..and she looked great, so thin and radiant...It was like a big scene though, helicopters following her convoy to the airport....the whole thing...

I'm so happy for her. I have to give her much respect for doing her time when she could have waited it out on appeal.
I would have gone home and taken the longest bath of my life.

Amen!

She looked amazing for someone who just got out of jail. She looked like she came back from a retreat.

I'm happy for her though. She didn't deserve it in the first place.

She was kind of glowing! That punishment certainly did not fit the crime. I'm not a fan of Martha but I am glad she is out.

wondergirl9847 03-04-2005 01:14 PM

Ridiculous

Like I said in another thread on this board...only murderers, rapists and child molesters should be in jail/prison. White collar criminals should not.

I don't know, what about the white collar crime of Enron that ruined HUNDREDS of lives by taking all their retirement savings, while they bought million dollar homes..etc.?

Jail. Some white collar criminals should get jail time IMO. I think Martha should have just gotten house arrest for 1-3 mos. 5 mos in jail was way excessive.

golddustwoman77 03-04-2005 04:25 PM

I'm glad she is out and can get back to coloring the world "decorated!" Go, Martha, Go!!!!!!!!!!! :D

tynan88 03-04-2005 07:52 PM

It seems the tall poppy syndrome exists in America too, it is just when people get too big people will do anything to drag them down, sad really.

What makes me mad about the whole thing was that Martha used to be a broker, she knew the rules and she just didn't care! She knew what she was doing was illegal and wrong, but that didn't stop her!

GateandGarden 03-04-2005 08:13 PM

Just when you thought you were safe.

Really? Did it harm people who were already rich? I'm not very schooled on exactly what the whole insider trading thing involves...

She sold her shares of ImClone right before it was announced that it would not garner FDA approval. She made about $40,000, I think? I mean come on, the woman is a billionaire. No one was harmed by that. Hell, her broker probably made himself a nice commission.

Would be saying this because she happens to be an incredibly generous monetary contributor to the Democrats?

I don't exactly see you hooting and hollering over Bush's insider trading.

Also, as a Republican, shouldn't you be concerned with overcrowding and wasting tax dollars on incarcerating people like that? Putting Martha Stewart through such a spectacle of a trial and then sending her off to prison certainly isn't what I would call fiscal responsibility.

Well, that is a matter of opinion. Hey, it's not like she went to jail for life! She is already out...I don't even remember her being in prison now! She'll still have her career and money, and all her fans now are happy. If you ask me they went easy on her.

That's ludicrous. I swear, there are robbers and rapists who serve less time...but, If you want to think that, go ahead. I'll just mark you off in the "uninformed" column and move on. :wavey:

LOL! No, she breaks the law, so she is the enemy! Especially the fact that she used to be a broker! THAT is what really makes me so mad about the entire thing. She knew the rules and knew what she was doing was just STUPID and WRONG! If anything she should have went to prison for stupidity if not for the crime itself.

The day we start locking people up for being stupid is the day half of this country becomes cellblock neighbors.

Martha Stewart deserved house arrest and a fine, nothing more.

That's basically what she got. I'm sure she was treated like a queen in prison.
