Greatest Movie Star Of Them All

Florence Lawrence

. . . who made forty-seven films in 1911 alone! So stick that in your corn-cob pipe, De Niro, Hoffman & Duvall!

Viva Lawrence!

Although many of them were one reelers shot in a week, she was a trooper.

BUT my Gloria Swanson was and is the greatest star of them all

Here is some bio on Flo.

And that was a light year for her. She made 81 appearances in '09.

Cool Info. I had read about her before, but forgot.

I could NEVER pick only one, I'd have a whole slew of them. And they'd probably be based on performances that I particularly enjoyed immensely rather than someone that's just a high profile actor. Though Katharine Hepburn is right up there; even in bad movies, she could do no wrong in my eyes.

amber 03-02-2005 05:58 PM

Yarg, everyone always says Katherine. I pick Bette.

Because she's so good. Same with Davis, though. If we were making a list of actresses, I'd most definitely include Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve, and Jessica Lange, too.

dissention 03-02-2005 06:06 PM

Oh, and Ellen Burstyn and Sally Kirkland (I don't care, she made a fan for life when I saw "Anna"). :wavey:

Yup, add those ones, too. And Faye Dunaway (for Network alone) and Julianne Moore (for...everything).

Ehhhhh...I don't know. I always thought she was VERY overrated. Great in Virginia Woolf, though. Nah, I wouldn't add her. She can't be forgiven for Cleopatra and The Flintstones.

We have to think of some male movie stars now... :woohoo:

dissention 03-02-2005 06:17 PM

Oh, have you ever seen any movies with Marianne Saegebrecht? She's really good, too. Mostly dark comedies, though. :)

She played the housekeeper in War of the Roses. Her three best ones are Sugarbaby, Rosalie Goes Shopping, and Bagdad Cafe. Bagdad Cafe is especially good and has Jack Palance and CCH Pounder in it, too. VERY funny movies and they make you feel good without being schmaltzy.

Why? You didn't just adore her portrayal of Sissy Goforth? That **** was unwatchable. She was such a mess in that flick, my word.

It took me way too long to find a good picture of that. (/grumble)

amber 03-02-2005 06:45 PM

I like Gregory Peck and Jack Lemmon for boys. And...Jack Nicholson...and...some other people I can't think of now. Cary Grant is pretty obvious, I guess. OH!!!! I LOOOOVE PETER O'TOOLE!
Richard Burton could probably make the list.

That's nice but I'm sure there are some porno actors and actresses who make that many films in a week!

Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite actors.

Same for me with Bob Mitchum. I'd pay to watch him read the phone book.

I can't think of anyone else who could scare me into thinking he might be a serial killer, and even knowing it could be true, I'd still wanna get with him.

Sick, huh? :p

Yeah, you would think so, dissention, but they probably know the importance of limbering up and stretching before engaging in such long-term physical activity to offset any soreness that might be encountered.

For me some of the greatest movie stars were also incredible actors, some aothers weren't, but they all made and make the movie experience magic:

Not in order, just ten:
Charlie Chaplin
Douglas Fairbanks
Greta Garbo
Katharine Hepburn
Spencer Tracy (also best actor ever  )
Marlon Brando
Humprey Bogart
Fred Astaire
Carol Lombard
Max Schrenk

Romy

I don't care how limber you are. That much activity and, to quote Stevie, "there's a fire burning."

"Nothing Sacred" is available on ****ty public-domain labels, "Godfrey" is beautifully released by Criterion, & "To Be or Not to Be," middling for both Carole & Lubitsch, JUST got released by Warners (but some reviews on Amazon say the transfer treatment is only middling itself).

Of course, the ideal quote in that situation would be "my walls are flaming" :)

I love those and will have to try and get them!!!!!

Also, and because it always has to come back to Gloria Swanson  - Swanson appeared on Broadway in a revival of Twentieth Century (1952) and in Butterflies Are Free (1971) - she was magnificent in both!!!!

To paraphrase DeMille - when you add them all up - Swanson is the greatest star of them all

I think there have been better actors, but NONE were a better "Movie Star" I mean she has not one but TWO two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - one for motion pictures at 6748 Hollywood Blvd. and one for television at 6301 Hollywood Blvd

Here is a cool site on her

I dunno

For some reason, I don't particularly care about movies anymore. When I was younger, I couldn't wait to go to Sound Warehouse or wherever to rent movies. I think I saw 4 movies last year (Passion of the Christ, Spiderman 2, Incredibles and In Good Company).

I don't know who the greatest movie star is...but the term movie star doesn't equal greatest actor/actress to me. A movie star is someone like Tom Cruise or Ally Sheedy. LOL They aren't really considered your great Oscar-caliber actors, right?

I don't really have a favorite actor anymore. I like Brad Pitt, but I haven't seen one of his movies since Ocean's Eleven. I love Cary Grant and one of my favorite movies of his is Arsenic and Old Lace...cracks me up every dang time.

I'd rather go to concerts than movies these days. When you go to the movies, there is no energy from that. Seeing my favorite singer on stage, there is nothing like it, the adrenaline rush is amazing! So, I choose music over movies.
